Premiership Centerback Available?
Calum Davenport, former Spur and current pouty Hammer, is on the outs. It sounds as if Zola wants to get something, but what kind of market is there going to be for a player with a broken neck a year ago and an attitude problem now.
Davenport played U-17, U-19, U-20 for the English Men's National Team as well. Calum turns 26 on New Years day. He's entering his prime physical shape.
From Center Defenseman Calum has only 9 starts this season, including one against the MLS All-Stars. In those starts he has 1 goal and 1 assist. For his career 106 starts and 22 substitutions in 8 seasons with 6 goals and 3 assists. He has appeared in the Carling, FA and UEFA Cups as well as the Premiership and Championship.

Would having two players that Davenport knows even a tiny bit be enough of a draw to add a solid Premiership talent center back?

I don’t know much about him but I think anyone with this level of ability would be great for the SSFC given his attitude is right. Someone like this with very good talent yet not a “superstar” could really flourish in the MLS. We need the defense, let’s sign him.

Impressive enough qualities, but my speculation is that someone with Davenport’s ability will not seriously consider MLS. I do think the ‘character’ question, of which we will struggle to really know, is huge—especially considering someone with Calum’s outbursts, would he really have the patience so succeed here? If he’s an upstanding-enough lad, I’d definitely take the risk of (and be prepared to pay) a decent transfer fee for him. I do think could be an outstanding addition to the back line. Didn’t play much at Spurs, but I’d love him here because of any sort of spell at the Lane!

My main point is that a guy like this would be a kind of reclamation project. He missed last season with a broken neck and now has an attitude issue.
So that’s the idea, is that he won’t be in the Championship or Premier with that history, he will need to come somewhere to rebuild his career.

Looks like Lucas Neill is also available, and on a Free.
That’s two Premiership defenseman who aren’t making DP money that could be of interest to MLS.

Neill is drawing interest from Blackburn, and his old manager.
