And now there are two
There are now two sports stations with local programming complimented by national backbone. Yesterday I was able to catch only a few segments of Kevin Calabro in the afternoon, yet stayed on Mitch in the Morning.
Over the next few weeks we will get to discover if either station goes for more intelligent talk, if one decides to go for the Lowest Common Denominator (sex/shock). We will discover if the lack of local programming in the AM hurts 710, or if the lack of the ESPN affiliation damages KJR.
Or will we discover that competition makes both stations, and sports even, in our fair Sound even better?
What are your thoughts on the new station? What would you like to hear from either? Which do you expect to treat Sounders FC and MLS as a real and genuine major sport in this town?

Well, unfortunately, don’t expect the ESPN national programming to even so much as report a score from MLS, much less a Sounders game. I guess maybe we could expect that Calabro’s show would cover some Sounders topics as he is calling their games now. Maybe he will help get SSFC some coverage!

I think 710 will inject some Sounders talk. KJR doesn’t have anyone on air that knows or likes soccer. 710 will want to bring in new listeners and a couple of shows regarding the Sounders could draw quite a few. Right now they are just beginning. Maybe they will find a few timeslots to plug in some soccer talk, once they get up and rolling.

710 (and the team) could go a long way to winning over Sounders fans by having an actual post-match show.

I would listen to a postgame show. It would be a simple proposition. KC would say, “Switch over to 710 am for the postgame show,” and then he and the halftime crew could dissect the game.
Simple proposition, though the production would require a lot of additional staff and time. I’d like them to do it though.
But it won’t happen. Most (but not all) postgame slots would be right in the thick of a Mariners game. They should just have it on 97.3. Or KJR could do their own, a la the old M’s show.

KJR’s first pregame show is this week, unless their plans have changed. Should be the pre-90 at Jimmy’s on First, again unless plans have changed.
By the way, Gas is going to have Kasey Keller on at 5:30P Tuesday night.

Kevin Calabro is the perfect commentator to lure the Seattle sports fan who doesn’t ‘get it’ about soccer, into the light. His is held in such high esteem by all the locals, that they’re apt to take a look-see at what all the fuss is about.
Post-game show – PLEASE! Which station is going to take the reigns and make it happen first? KJR has done a decent job with hosting SFC interviews: Keller today and previously, Hanauer, Roth, Sigi, Ljunberg…but I’d like to think those ESPN folks are pretty savvy, and know a good buzz when they hear/see it. I predict that during their first week they’ll be giving MLS, the Sounders FC and the SFC fan more respect! “OhhhhOOOOOoooOOoooo, OhhhhOOOOOoooOOoooo, go Sounders..!”

I definitely hope that 710 gives the Sounders some coverage, but earlier I was referring to the fact the the ESPN NATIONAL shows i.e. Cowherd, Mike and Mike, Tirico & Van Pelt, will NEVER talk soccer. EVER. I’ve been a pretty avid listener of ESPN radio for the past several years on their affiliate over in SPokane, and the most soccer coverage that the national guys give, is an occasional score from a Champions League Final, or a few World Cup scores.
None of the on air personalities know anything about the game, or have any interest in talking about it. BUmmer for us.
