Roster Math, on going

We are going to assume that the 2009 rules are in effect until they are not.  That's what any GM would have to do, and so that's how we will do it.  First a reminder of the rules

20 Senior Slots
4 Developmental Slots
8 International Slots
1 Designated Player Slot
4 Disabled List Slots

At this time -

Senior Slots filled 21 - Wahl is not a roster player at this time. We must assume that the DL player left on the team is still on the DL.

Developmental Slots filled 1 - Sanna Nyassi, as Zakuani has graduated from the Generation Adidas program

International Slots filled - 6, correction MLSnet did not list Ljungberg, but he does not have a Green Card to my knowledge.

Disabled List Slots - 1 (Eylanders)

This means that under the current roster rules the Sounders really can only pick up 3 players that all must be under 25 through the calendar year of 2010.  Most of these come through the draft, but let us recall Sanna Nyassi was signed as a DevP from outside of the USA/Canada.

As of 27 November 2009 the ONLY way for the Sounders to improve is to cut and replace current Senior Players or have signed players make significant improvements.  Wahl is a free agent (kinda, MLS is odd), but Hanauer says they intend to bring him back.

So would there be any way the Sounders could sign, say, Stuart Holden?

He’s 23, good, out of contact(?), but I have no idea what the rules for signings are or whether he’d be leaving the country etc.

Did you just read my twitter?

Because there’s a story out of Scotland that Holden will be too expensive for Aberdeen due to the Setanta failure and market collapse.

Graham, the best way to think of it is like in the Reserve Clause days, but this is done within US & Canadian law due to the single entity structure. 90% of Free Agents in MLS aren’t really free agents.

Holden is out of contract, but I believe that Houston holds his MLS rights. Make sense?

I'd seen the story from Scotland (although not throught Twitter)

But that makes sense. It’s a shame though, he would fit extremely well on the team.

I'm going to hold off on that until the new CBA is signed

There could be dramatic changes

I’m hearing hints that the “Developmental Player” designation is something that is desired to be dropped. Adding a Designated Player. Possibility of Canadian players added to the Draft.

There is also a high probability of the Reserve League making a return (which would effect total slots available).

For the current rules look here
