MLS SuperDraft 2010 Live Thread - Sounders get David Estrada

ESPN2, ESPN360 and/or MLSnet.com

With #11 Pick Sounders Get David Estrada,Forward/ Midfielder from UCLA. I'm stunned with Bone, Stahl and Akpan available they went way off the draft board.

Let's give us a home to talk about the moves and picks that are sure to happen. I will be popping in and out throughout the day.

So far Philly has acquired Fred, the #7 and the #6 picks.

DC United acquired Troy Perkins via the Allocation process.

Dallas has acquired Allocation Dollars

New England picked up some late rounds picks as well

With so many teams trading

Do you expect Seattle to dip into the trade waters?
Do you want them to?

If we could grab another first round pick I'd say yes.

But that seems unlikely. Also, Holy Hell Philly is stacking themselves with young players, or they will be after this draft at least. Unless the package those picks. Lots of moving and shaking from the Union, which is crazy.

by Perrinbar on Jan 14, 2010 9:11 AM PST reply actions

They have a former U-20 USMNT coach

And it looks like they are counting on him training some players up to MLS level.

Makes sense. Of course, without a development league it also makes me feel like Philly isn’t going to be competitive right away. Although you never know I guess.

Pick #1 and Philly doesn't surprise

Danny Mwanga, former Beaver, now wears the Blue and Gold of the Union. He’ll work up top with Seb Le Toux and Alejandro Moreno.

Pick #6 & #7 for Philly Union

Things are leaving the draft board now, as Phlly gets to through everything off by having a back to back here in the middle of the draft.

With #6 Amobi Okugo, midfielder from UCLA
With #7 Jack McInerney, Foward and U-17/20 player

I’m stunned that he went that high. Very young, very raw, and not likely to get much time next year.

That is surprising. McInerney isn’t ready to start for an MLS team so where does Nowak see him getting any time to develop? At least on the Sounders he’d have several options for playing time: Open Cup, Champion’s league, League play. Interesting choice.

by Perrinbar on Jan 14, 2010 11:39 AM PST up reply actions

Methinks Adrian has several thoughts on who to pick. Everything I’ve seen from our front office is being well prepared.

#8 for C-Bus Crew

Dilly Duka

Good pick for Crew, as they have plenty of depth. Duka should learn well from Gaven (drafted at 16 yrs) and GBS

Sure could. We’ll see if we take him or not.

Bone and Stahl are both still available.

What the poop?

Ives had us taking him in his mock draft, but in the second round. Seems like a reach….

That's way off my board

I limited my studying to about a dozen guys, and that wasn’t one of them.

Well.

I’ll trust Adrian for now, but that seems to be a serious reach. Possibly he fits most into our needs, but who knows?

Buzz Carrick

Said in his live chat this is a guy with great technical and tactical skills without the size, in effect. Basically an anti-American pick, as ht/wt tend to get too much attention.

Ives

seems to think someone wants Bone. Makes sense.

by Perrinbar on Jan 14, 2010 12:02 PM PST up reply actions

Why didn't we do that?

If Estrada was their guy, they almost certainly could have gotten him by trading down – especially with Bone still on the board.

by bauckus on Jan 14, 2010 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

It's pretty clear

that Adrian didn’t believe Estrada would still be there later or we likely wouldn’t have gone after him first round in the first place. Maybe he’s wrong, maybe he’s not a great drafter in the wheeling dealing sense. We’ll see in the future.

by Perrinbar on Jan 14, 2010 12:06 PM PST up reply actions

Makes sense

They know they have value in a pick that could net Bone, but they already have Duka.

#12 for Crew

Bright Dike of Notre Dame

Another reach pick. Have the GM/TD/Coaches forgotten that Bone, Stahl and Akpan are there?

Buzz Carrick on Estrada

His #8 ranked forward:

David Estrada, UCLA — Many people seem to have forgotten how good Estrada was when he burst onto the scene in his walk-on freshman campaign. Estrada led UCLA with a school freshman-record 12 goals and was named almost everyone’s national Freshman of the Year that season. A marked man since, Estrada has been given little room to work and not a lot of help up top the last few seasons. Surgery for a fractured metatarsal cost him the first half of the 2007 season. Fully healthy in 2009, Estrada picked up his fourth career Pac-10 nod with a first-team honor on the strength of his three goals and seven assists. A former U.S. U-18 with terrific feet, vision and ball skill, Estrada has always been a combination striker who flourishes in a good partnership. Estrada leaves UCLA with 22 goals and 14 assists in four seasons.

He also apparently had a pretty good combine, at least in the sense that he proved that his freshman year wasn’t a fluke.

rotational attacking player

so they drafted a guy they feel can be added as a “rotational” player at any one of the spots at the top or sides of the “diamond” in “Sigi’s Arrow”

right?!

...that's MISTER Keller to you!!!

RW, WF from the basics that I’m getting so far. He’s got experience getting double teamed as well.

#14 for Red Bull NY

After the RBNY timeout the pick is Austin Da Luz, from Wake Forrest, he had a great camp.

Notice the number of Wake players drafted? Last year Sounders took Brown.

Second Round still has some decent talents available

Tony Stahl, Andre Akpan, and Kyle Nakazawa were all worthy of a first round pick

Sheannon Williams once got looks in Europe, but is now a fringe MLS talent
