Congratulations From Black And Red United
Watching the Seattle Sounders win the U.S. Open Cup on their own turf last night brought back some memories, both good and bad.
In the 24th minute, when Seattle fell behind 1-0 on a Columbus Crew goal by Kevin Burns, Qwest field was silent for just a moment. The crowd resumed their singing and chanting just a second or two later, as they should, but there was that momentary lapse, inspired by disbelief and doubt. It was as if the entire stadium at the same instant went from "We MUST win this game" to "Oh crap, we might not actually win this game!"
I know the feeling. Because I felt it one year ago. I went into the stadium that day with total excitement, fully expecting to see my team lift a trophy in person for the first time. And it wasn’t until that moment that my excitement was replaced by doubt, and eventually disappointment, frustration, and anger.
D.C. United hasn’t really recovered yet from that moment in the 67th minute when Fredy Montero and Josh Wicks combined to ruin the club’s chance to proudly lift the Cup in front of its fans. But last night, the Sounders recovered from their moment just 14 minutes later, and they didn’t turn back.
Personally, I’m happy for the Seattle soccer community, and specifically the readers and writers of this very blog. This trophy has a history longer and richer than our league, yet it’s never been paid as much respect as it deserves. Until now. Previously thought of as a consolation prize, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been rightfully embraced by Sounder At Heart. And you’ve all been rewarded for your dedication and support by getting the opportunity to see your beloved club rejoice in celebration of victory in front of your very own eyes.
You deserve it. So enjoy it.
Because we’ll be dropping by to take it back to D.C. next year.

I actually wished we played you guys instead of Columbus this season for the trophy
It was a pretty close thing. A rematch of last season would have been fun. Hopefully we will see you next season (with an improved roster, you think?)
That came off a bit more rudely than I intended
what I meant was that I hope you guys get your team turned around and we’ll see you next year in the final?
Me too
I was really disappointed when Columbus won. Watching the game last year was thrilling, a rematch would’ve been that much better.

Thanks for the post
DCU definitely has a place in my heart. I used to live in the DC area (in the Adu era) before moving to Seattle and I thoroughly enjoyed watching DCU down at RFK.
I hope to see you in next year’s final, but don’t count on taking home the trophy. :-)
