Unverified word of mouth is that
riley, jaqua, and evans protected
blaise nkufo not protected

I'll
be surprised that Jaqua is protected over N’kufo.
On the other
hand would Portland or Vancouver waste a DP on a 35 year old that making 450k.
also that he may
retire at the end of the contract.
I had Jaqua being protected and not Nkfuo
Seems reasonable and smart to me.
by MMAWrestling on Nov 22, 2010 2:54 PM PST up reply actions
Well
it was sort of a guess of which would be protected Jaqua or N’kufo.
If Nkufo is not protected, then some other international needs to be protected...
…in addition to Hurtado and Flaco. We need at least 3 international players on our protected list.
Why? He would be fun to boo!

Then we can wail on him and Portland at the same time :)

He was my first ever favorite Sounder and one of the reasons why I started following soccer on the club level.
I have a soft spot in my heart for immensely talented retard athletes.
His red cards last year were adorable.
That player for me is probably Steven Gerrard.
When he eventually leaves Liverpool, it’s very likely I’ll be crushed…
He
is looking to be aiming to go back to Europe i believe. And is he that type of player that Portland wants.
And you can only have so many internationals on the squad
So having Ljungberg would make it harder for them to pick up, say, some players from South America in the offseason.
No way will Portland take Ljungberg IMO
besides the uncertainty about his future, there’s also the fact that probably the best way for them to constantly be compared to how successful the Sounders were in their first season is to share one of the most visible Sounders players from that season.
Yeah that's what I've been doing, alternating keywords and such
I tried Bing thinking maybe I’d get some different hits. Instead it just sucks
Saw that earlier. interesting.

hurtado, parke, and ianni….one had to go, right?
proud 4th line advocate
After a long arduous summer of training, back for a new season of perpetuating hockey superstitions
It
bound to happen especially when you get a good team both depth and starting in some spots.
I'm not sure
I don’t know their roster that well, granted, but beyond their starters, their depth is pretty suspect. A lot of older, past-their-prime kind of guys. It contributed to their slowness at times. Their younger guys will be either homegrown or protected and they’ll protect their stars.
Not necessarily.
Especially considering that we don’t know how well Hurtado is going to come back from his knee injury.
Yea
while i was hoping all 3 be protected but a Hurtado parke combo would be better than a Hurtado ianni or a Parke ianni combo.
Could Parke play LB?
He might not be the most useful guy in the attack, but I feel like he has at least as much speed as Leo.
thank you
Thx for doing this mucho appreciated.
No, as in a team would have to be stupid to ignore his talent
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
Yeah. That would be a very surprising move to me, leaving him unprotected, especially with his age and his quality already. Stranger things have happened.
The Washington Post soccer beat reporter shot that down.

Didn’t seem very likely to me in the first place. That would be like leaving Najar off. Plain silly.
Najar's homegrown, right?
Doesn’t need to be protected.
He would be my first choice
if he’s not out to Europe or elsewhere already

So, the sounders told me about 45 minutes ago via twitter that the lists would be out “very soon”

I guess either something came up with MLS, or we have two very different definitions of “very soon”

Only tangengially related, but
Portland got Hall from NYRB for a 3rd round pick in the draft, too.
they also
as someone posted above got a international slot from LA.
Prediction: stepping away for dinner
lists coming out asap.

If there
is a trade involved MLS would have to approve of it.

Better than Vagenas?
Baudet seems like he is reasonably solid the few times I’ve noticed him, though maybe not starter quality. Don’t know about Earls.
WOW
I am absolutely shocked. That’s insane!!

Earls
looks like he weighs 400 pounds according to that picture
by chrisperry1983 on Nov 22, 2010 4:23 PM PST up reply actions
Earls is 21, Baudet 31
Earls played for Aston Villa’s reserve team for a couple of years, then moved to the states.
Baudet bounced around in lower divisions in Europe before joining the Rapids and playing fairly regularly for them.
Doesn't even look like the same guy.
Check this out: http://www.coloradorapids.com/player/danny-earls
Being that he’s an Irishman, he automatically becomes one of my favorite Sounders.
Well we didn't win the MLS Cup, but we also didn't just trade for Vagenas
by Graham MacAree on Nov 22, 2010 4:22 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
Could Colorado possibly protect him?
It would be ultimately hilarious if Vagenas was picked in the Expansion Draft.
Earls and Baudet both take up an international spot on the roster...
…so maybe Colorado wants to make space for international signings? I mean, it doesn’t seem likely that Vagenas would get picked in the expansion draft, so this is probably a safe move for the Rapids, but Vagenas does have a lot of experience in the league, so maybe a young team could want that. Seems like it would be a longshot, though, since there is bound to be more talent available in this draft than prior drafts with up to two selections from each team.
LWB
Interesting to see what happens to Gonzales. At least they are staying true to form in terms of their tendency towards wing play.
I think it's a no-brainer to leave Gozalez off the list
He’s not that young, he seems to be slowing, he doesn’t have that much experience in the league, and he takes up an international spot on the roster. I think it would really be a reach for Portland or Vancouver to take him. Plus, if you figure that Earls can play LB, you’ve got someone to play LB one way or another.
Exactly
I liked Gonzalez more than most (probably) but speed on the flank is necessary in their system. He will allow for much more interplay and overlapping runs with Zakuani.
Well
I have to leave in like 5 mins to take a turkey dinner to a family. So unless something comes out asap, I won’t be here to update this story and will do it later.
Thanks for your efforts anyways, not your fault that they are taking two and a half hours longer then we thought

It was especially interesting comparing
Baudet’s regular season appearances over the past two years (28) to Vagenas’s total appearances across all competitions (28).
And recalling that I felt I saw way too much of him last season, it was surprising that Vagenas played only 18 games for the Sounders last season across all competitions.
From the RLS blog on SBN.
The list of UNprotected players. Nkufo and Nyassi are both on the Sounders’ segment, as is Ianni as earlier speculated.

Only difference between that and what I put into the Protectinator...
… is swapping Jaqua for Nkufo, which makes sense for it’s own reasons.
i'm
amazed how accurate some of us had this
Picked the wrong outside back
And Nkufo for Jaqua. Two off ain’t bad.
CougCenter, SBNation Seattle, @FloydCoug
Night Editor - SBNation.com
I had Nkufo for Jaqua
and Leo for Riley as well
Huh
From my interpretation of the rules, I thought we needed to protect at least three international players. If Zak’s or Fredy’s green card hasn’t gone through yet, then “Alonso, Evans, Fernandez, Fucito, Hurtado, Jaqua, Keller, Montero, Parke, Riley, Zakuani” would be a legit list, but I’m surprised that they are able to leave that many internationals unprotected.
Alonso
is not international.
Zak hasn’t officially gotten his green card so Zak Alvaro and hurtado make it 3.
That would make sense
If this is who the Sounders really wanted to protect, it is fortunate that his green card hasn’t come through yet.
The one thing that doesn't smell right...
…is Ianni protected over Riley last year, and Riley protected over Ianni this year. I mean, I know Parke is on the list now, but that alone doesn’t seem to justify protecting Riley. We’ll see, I guess.
who's
the better of the Wing backs? Riley or Leo. Plus we just traded for a possible replacement for Leo
So then, who would get taken?
And who would get protected as a result?
My first thought: Lose Nyassi to either (probably Portland), protect Nkufo, lose Ianni.
If Nkufo is the first taken, Ianni would probably be protected.
Do you
think Vancouver would want to to use up a DP slot and 350k of cap space?
Has there ever been a DP taken in a expansion draft before?
Since DPs have only been around a few years
and were mostly limited to JPA, Beckham early on, I’m pretty confident it hasn’t happened.
It’ll be interesting to see what Vancouver does, especially with DeMerit’s salary on the books.
Pretty sure that DeMerit at least isn't a DP
It does seem like they would be putting a lot of money into DeMerit and Nkufo without either being a “marquee” name that would draw fans just from his celebrity, which seems to be something that teams prefer to have in a DP (although obviously they don’t always make that the #1 priority.)
There was a rumor awhile back...
… of a gentleman’s agreement between Nkufo and the two clubs to do exactly that. Only one way to find out if that’s true, I guess.
N'kufo
can be potentially player #12.
Why would Seattle give up a player like N’kufo for free.
Because you have a player you think can fill that position
at a fraction of the cost. Or you think you can find one on the market. It’s clear Nkufo did and can produce, he just looks old out there. This is a team predicated on speed and he doesn’t fit.
question though
how do you replace N’kufo ball handling skills? If hes gone.
