Sigi told Hurculez Gomez to 'quit soccer'?
Interesting Sigi insight via Herculez Gomez/Adam Serrano twitter convo? Risking tabloid anecdote status, I know, but still caught my eye. For what it's worth:
Through his twitter account today, Herculez Gomez (@herculezg Pachuca, USMNT) takes beef with Sigi's comment on which side of the field Beckham's corner leading to the first Galaxy goal should have been taken from. Here's Sigi, from Joshua Mayers Seattle Times blog:
Well Beckham's very clever. He's actually too clever for the referees as well. ... On the one that they scored the first goal -- on the first corner -- the ball goes out on the other side of the field. The corner is supposed to be taken on that side of the field. Toledo, who's the referee, has to make sure it happens there. Beckham just picks up the ball and walks to the other side of the field. He's too clever for our own referees. Our referees needs to be more clever because the players are more clever than they are.
This remark seems to have sparked Gomez into a conversation with Adam Serrano (@adamserrano journalist) regarding Sigi and MLS playoffs. Gomez eventually, if I interpret correctly, implies that Sigi may at one point of time told him 'to quit soccer'. This possibly llustrates another dimension of Sigi mentalities....
Conversation after the jump.
Gomez' initial tweet instigating the conversation:
Ha! Come on Sigi.. Really? That goal probably wouldn't have gone in if Beckham & Edson Buddle weren't on the field. http://bit.ly/ahLptI
Adam's first reply:
@herculezg Red herring to the max by Sigi. Was in disbelief during that presser. So herc, who do you like out west now that RSL is gone?
Rather than discuss playoffs, Gomez offers:
@adamserrano I had him as a coach for 2 years, I believe it. I have heard it all from him,The man told me to quit soccer, not in my future.
Gomez, perhaps responding to two conversations, but surely regarding Sigi's comment (not sure why he addresses himself):
@Ebee333 @herculezg He needs to watch the replay. The referee called the corner correctly.<IDE be more worried bout defending than what side
Adam returns to topic:
@herculezg I believe it on Sigi. On the West, Dallas will raise some challenges & Hartman will be tough to beat. A man on fire right now.
Herculez agrees, dur ta dur Dallas this and that:
@adamserrano no doubt that both my boys (Hartman & Ugo) will raise their game..side note; I love Hartys back to the wall reply. Thanks KC.
And I'll spare you Adam's last reply, but if you want.
Do you interpret the conversation as I do? His 'I've heard it all' referring to Sigi's quirky analogies or something more dramatic? Reactions? I'm reading too much into it? Maybe I just have a too biased and narrow-minded view of Sigi and that's why this caught me....

My take
Not sure what to take from that. Herculez was discarded by more than one coach on his way to starring in Mexico. Doesn’t surprise me that he feels like he’s proven all of them wrong.

Are poor motivators. How unfortunate.

I always take these kinds of things with a few grains of salt
Who knows what the exact comment was, what the situation was, what the intent was, etc.
