Another Call for Tomoaki Makino
With MLS announcing that they will have a dedicated scout looking into the AFC, and specifically working with the San Jose Earthquakes at the J-League Free Agent Combine, it is time for the Sounders, or at the least MLS, to go after this youngster hard. There's a reason I launched the Searching for a Free post with him.
The participation of the Quakes coaching staff is a direct result of the league’s expanding international scouting network. The latest addition is MLS Asian scouting coordinator Takehiko Nakamura, who will be looking to open a bigger door for players from the Asian Football Confederation to come through to ply their trade in MLS.
Great for the Earthquakes, but I see a Seattle Sounders team that could use Central Midfield and Leftback depth. Makino would be that. A long thrower, who can attack with the ball at his feet, score with his head and with a foundation as a defender first.
Seattle has lost two players (Sebastien Le Toux, Lamar Neagle) now who have moved forward from defender to attacker. It is time to SIGN one of those. A player who can transition to a new league and go from center back, to left wing back to central midfielder.
If MLS is serious about acquiring young players who are going to use the league as the final step before a Big5/G-14 signing this is the type of player they should sign.

I wonder if this would work for us the way Ichiro has worked for the M's?
I don’t know much about Makino, but if he came over here and started dominating, it could be an in on the Japanese market to pay attention to our team, and maybe draw more fans of that demographic?

How could we sign this guy?
Sounds great. If this guy is that good, then how can we sign him under the current salary structure?
My experience
If there’s a will, there’s a way.

another note..
In Adrian Hanauers chat with the Seattle Times, I asked him specifically about the Asian market and if they were going to sign an Asian player to try to reach that market. His response said (paraphrase from memory) that the team plans to spend a significant amount of time with the new consultant from Japan, and that they would explore every opportunity regarding Asia, and signing an Asian player.
marauding fullback
I’ve wondered about the Sounders adding an aggressive, attacking type of fullback to their system (this is a step beyond the typical attacking contributions of fullbacks, but more of a Maicon type of player)
...that's MISTER Keller to you!!!

Is it Gilbert's drunk and disorderly conviction
that classifies him as an aggressive fullback?
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. We are all around you, there is no escape.
That's the kind of aggression
they are familiar with.
