Why the venom?
I have noticed that on a lot of soccer forums/blogs (not this one) there seems to be this certain pride in soccer fans setting themselves apart from other sports. American Football in particular. My question is, "Why the venom?"
If the goal is to grow the popularity of soccer in the USA, then why do fans intentionally isolate themselves and create this barrier between fan groups of other sports? For instance, was browsing through a thread on the Seattle Times Sounders forum and found an extensive amount of references to the "Sea-Chickens" or "Seahags". WHY? Are these not precisely the people that we are trying to persuade to give soccer a chance?
Thoughts?

Little brother syndrome
After being treated like a little brother for so long soccer fans tend to take things very personally when their sport is questioned. Then they hit back.
It is quite petty really. Making up stupid names for other sports doesn’t prove that your own sport is better. At best it shows that you can be clever.
Me, I care about the sport, and want it to grow. I practice a thing called “Soccer Evangelism” where I try to get people who have routinely mocked the sport enjoy just one match with me. A few of these have become ticket holders now.
There are still about 30,000 seats or so that need to be filled. Insulting people certainly won’t get them there.

Because
soccer football is a superior sport and soccer football fans supporters are superior beings!
I’m all for loving what you like, and letting other people love what they like, and spreading it all around, and not getting snooty about it.
