Luis Gil to Seattle or RSL? Currently with Wizards, what is his value?

Promoted to Frontpage to discuss what his value is to Sounders. Originally written prior to allocation lottery, within the comments you can find that a few papers are reporting the first rumor linked here as fact.

With the lottery one day away to decide where Luis Gil goes, it may not be such a lottery after. According to Three Four Three FC Blog, Luis Gil is rumored to be going to either Seattle or RSL. If one of the 14 other teams win the lottery, He will be trade to either team, whoever puts up the better trade bid for Gil. He is a member of Generation Adidas so regardless where he ends up he won't count against the salary cap.

As a Sounders FC fan, my first thought of Gil coming to Seattle, as young as he is, taking up one of two remaining DV spot away from those that are fighting to earn them and what ever Seattle has to give up to get him is not really such a good idea . However, now that I think of it more to possibly have a Freddie Adu talent like player on the team is astounding.  With Sigi as Head Coach of the Sounders, it sounds like he would be a perfect fit in Seattle and fill any depth gaps Seattle has in the midfielder like LW and RW but he would finally fill a hole that Seattle has been lacking at CAM but also work as a LAM and a RAM.

After he spends a few years developing and learning under Sigi, I think he could potentially become an offensive threat in the midfield that Seattle so direly needs.

Which ever team he may end up playing for rather it be here in Seattle or in Real Salt Lake or anywhere else, he will be a good contributing player to the team and this league.

If I was the Sounders GM, at the most i would give up to get him would be allocation and maybe a 3rd or 4th round draft pick.  However,  to give up a player or anything higher than a 3rd round for a 16 year old that could potentially be a bust would be a risk I am not willing to make at this time.

so the question is

who the hell is “Three four three fc blog”? I looked at the blog and see nothing that convinces me that the person has any exclusive insight to the deal Luis Gil might have signed. I didn’t see any source mentioned, so while it may be true and I wouldn’t blame a young striker with a lot of upside for wanting to join either the high profile Sounders with a quality head coach Sigi, or defending MLS champs with one of the MLS’s best ever strikers as their head coach.

I'm with you

Early thoughts had me thinking Galaxy or Goats were preferred, so he could stay in school and still train with the team. He has over a year of high school left.

Denz,

Indeed i find it bizarre my self and since we have no idea on contract itself we will have to wait and see what happens. I’m with Dave here since he’s from California i would have expected he would go to the galaxy or Chivas USA.

3 for 3

I have read him before. Some garbage about if Gil stays here, he will be ruined like Freddy Adu.
MLS not being world class enough for his writting evidently.

He failed to mention Landon is doing alright staying here.

It would be nice if there as a source

The author almost literally says “Trust me or don’t, we’ll see who’s right.” Certainly seems like it could just be a cry for attention, which he seems to have received.

Just wondering...

How did you even find this blog? Did you just Google “Luis Gil” and this is what came up or was it linked from somewhere else?

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 21, 2010 5:01 PM PST reply actions

It has been linked by Keepin it Real

A Salt Lake blog that denz knows

Who gave similar caveats as to here.

Found it being posted at BigSoccer. Who knows what’s going on or what’s going to happen. The post was my opinion on what i think if Gil was coming here.

I certainly wasn't questioning your motvies

Just an honest question. Hope that didn’t come off as accusatory.

No worries. Such a person coming to Seattle would be great but if its gonna cost Seattle too much no way.

This blog claimed that Claudio Lopez

Has been waived. They wrote it on Feb 20th

Lopez has been out of contract since the end of season. Is not required by MLS rule to be waived.

Not sure about "waived"

But Ives reported today that KC has given up on trying to resign him and is cutting him loose.

by bauckus on Feb 23, 2010 2:53 PM PST up reply actions

Best I can tell

I’ve been going through several different Twitter feeds and blogs and the closest thing I could find was a comment in the Ives post that purports to be from a friend of Gil’s:

I know him personally he told me that arsenal was low balling him with the money they had offered him the mls offer was better than theirs and he tpld me he told is agent that his choices were Seattle or rsl

It’s dated Feb. 19. The blog post in question is dated Feb. 21. Could this be their “source?”

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 21, 2010 5:16 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Possible

Now, what this does open up though, is how valuable do Sounders fans think a talent such as Gil’s would be both in the near term and long?

If he turns out to be the next super star no need to look for a CAM.

by gstommylee on Feb 21, 2010 5:30 PM PST up reply actions

And don't what this means

But three.four.three.fc is apparently a clothing line designed by “people who worked in the soccer industry,” which itself is pretty vague. The blog is tied to that.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 21, 2010 5:18 PM PST reply actions

Even as a Sounders fan...

I would rather see a kid that young be allowed to play closer to home and finish high school. It sure would be fun to watch a young talent like that develop up close, but I doubt this is “set for life” money and I would rather see him develop in a way that is best for him.

Of course, if he is really saying he wants to play for Seattle, maybe MLS should grant him his wish.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 21, 2010 5:23 PM PST reply actions

The only issue i have if one of the other 14 teams that gets him and they ask for a first round pick for his rights. (not that it would happen) And I’m curious in the language of the contract.

by gstommylee on Feb 21, 2010 5:27 PM PST up reply actions

Still unsourced, of course

Ubiquitous “Internet rumors” and “the blogosphere.” I suppose this isn’t the kind of thing you get a firm comment on, though…

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 22, 2010 9:13 AM PST up reply actions

Certainly sounds reasonable

Nice to see a reputable journalist going on record with this. Thanks for the update.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 22, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

Part of the rumor is true that who ever gets him that’s not seattle or RSL will trade him question is is the rest of the rumor true that its to seattle or RSL.

by gstommylee on Feb 22, 2010 11:18 AM PST up reply actions

Can Seattle or RSL use him?

It’ll be interesting to see where he ends up… I’m sure he would get more playing time with the Wizards than he will if he goes to either the Sounders or RSL…
Especially the Sounders…. I mean currently the Sounders are pretty overloaded with people. It’s already a toss up as to who will be signed in the last couple available roster slots…

RSL might be able to use him… but developmental wise there are only a couple coaches I would trust to develop him, Sigi being one of those…. we will see in a couple days I guess

KC wizards confrims that its either RSL or Seattle but they will try to see if he’ll change his mind.

by gstommylee on Feb 22, 2010 12:56 PM PST reply actions

And who says the Internet lies?

That’s about as authoritative a source as one could hope for. Good work to whoever broke the story. I guess now we can really debate what Luis Gil is worth, eh?

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 22, 2010 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

My opinion has been stated on what he is worth but he is GA though not sure how much that will influence what KC will get cause. Its not by KC’s choice that they are trading him.

by gstommylee on Feb 22, 2010 1:55 PM PST up reply actions

It would be good for KC but...

like I said before he’s a really young player… and while he may actually get playing time seeing as KC was near the bottom of the league and I am not hopefully they will climb anywhere this year.
Really, I don’t care where he ends up. I’m more concerned about his development for the future. So that eventually he can move off to Europe or somewhere else. I’m not sure KC is that kind of place. There are only a handful of coaches that I think are experienced enough or have a good track record. Those are but not limited to Preki (turned Chivas around pretty quick), Sigi Schmid (been a great coach in all levels of competition), Dominic Kinnear (Houston has consistently done well and has had a bunch of relatively successful international players), Bruce Arena (turned the Galaxy around in 1 year).

by majora999 on Feb 22, 2010 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

My previous comment not withstanding

If I’m Seattle, I might be willing to part with a first-rounder. From the looks of things, our first-rounder this year might not even make the senior roster despite some decent pedigree. Ljundberg and Montero probably aren’t long for this league, so it would be great to have someone like that ready to make a contribution in a couple years.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Feb 22, 2010 2:14 PM PST reply actions

50/50 shot

Its pretty much a 50/50 chance that Seattle will land him and we’ll probably know in a couple days who gets him.

by gstommylee on Feb 22, 2010 3:45 PM PST reply actions

Or when ever KC receives the offers.

by gstommylee on Feb 22, 2010 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

Kyle Davies was worth a 2nd Round Pick

When Davies decided to make MLS his league his rights were obtained for a 2nd rd pick.

I would be willing to give up a 3rd rounder now with a conditional pick in 3 years based on Gil’s performance

3four3 (a different blog)

worries thatMLS will not develop Gil to his full potential, with a reliance on a physical and vertical game rather than possession and passing.

I think Gary needed to watch more Sounders games.

For those who have watched Gil a bit closer than I have...

It is hard to really see any 16-year-old coming in and starting straight away so to find the development time we need to figure out where he can play right now. And since we probably won’t be in a position to simply hand out too much playing time for future development, we have to ask how many positions can he fill in for to get the game time he needs.

Can he fill in at CAM right now if and when Ljundberg misses some games?

Can he play at all on the wings of the Arrow?

Does he have the toughness to play a deep-lying play-maker?

I really just have not watched him enough to really tell, but I think the answers to these types of questions will help figure out how highly we should value him.

by brokejumper on Feb 23, 2010 10:14 AM PST reply actions

Looks like he’s going to RSL for transfer money 2nd round pick and international slot. http://twitter.com/RobbHeineman

by gstommylee on Feb 23, 2010 12:11 PM PST reply actions

RSL will be a good fit

They handled Adu, earning them some money on transfer.

They’ve also loaned a youth player down to Timbers before. I don’t remember his name.

Although they struggled with Besagno.

But for a young club to have had 3 teens already does show that they are willing to take that risk.

Now that we see what RSL gave up to get him. I would offer a first round pick over an international slot.

We can easily find a foreign player out there that will impact now with the international slot.

by gstommylee on Feb 23, 2010 12:42 PM PST up reply actions

Alex Nimo

Alex is the kid who was with the timbers last year, and did OK he is back with RSL and looking good in the one practice I have seen.
So it looks like Gil is coming to Salt Lake, his brother Benji was here briefly in 2006 but didn’t see any first team action. I ahve to believe one of the reasons he wants to come here is the continued development of our young strikers over the past couple years. Robbie Findley, Yura Movsisyan, Fabian Espindola, all young guys who have gotten much better with RSL.

I am not sure what kind of impact a 16 year old can make, but it will be interesting to see. I will try to catch up with him next week if I can get out to the stadium while the team is in town (2 days).

RSL > Wizards

RSL is definitely a better enviroment for him in my opinion. Hopefully they can figure out what to do to help him develop. I don’t forsee the Wizards doing a whole lot anytime soon. So I’m glad Gil is getting out of KC.

by majora999 on Feb 23, 2010 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

Either environments would have been fine for him. But he’s not worth an international slot imo especially with how good Seattle can scout.

by gstommylee on Feb 23, 2010 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

It really didn't cost us one

When we picked up Yura Movsisyan from KC we got one of their international slots, so we are just returning theirs. The reality is that RSL has done well with international slots the last couple years, but they are a crap shoot. We picked up Olave, Morales, Espindola, all of whom are a major part of the roster, but we have had some misses as well with Deuchar, Luis Miguel Escalada, and others who have had talent but simply haven’t fit in with RSL or MLS. Getting a young kid who is considered the best US player under the age of 20 is clearly worth an international slot, both for what he may bring on the field, but the future value on the international market.

I do have to correct my report, his brothers name was Brian, and he actually was a development player and never on a full RSL roster. I can’t wait to ask Luis why he and his family chose RSL and Seattle as the teams he would play for.
