Sometimes Friendly is the Wrong Word - Sounders hosting Portland in Charity Match

Who: Sounders v Timbers
What: Charity Match, preseason friendly
Where: Qwest Field
When: 3/11 6PM
How Much: 10$ for Adults, 6$ a mere 5$ for Children (U-6 free)

Yep, read that how much again. General admission for the whole dang thing, or however much they decide to open. I'm certain something will be worked out as I don't forsee the ECS/GFC/NES and Timber's Army sitting in the same sections.

But overall this is a great idea. It offers a sampler for many of those people who can't get season tix, and it raises money for a few good causes.

Star-divide

Proceeds from the match will benefit the team’s four community partners: Boys and Girls Club of Washington State, Save the Children, Seattle SCORES and Washington Youth Soccer.  Following the match the teams will sign autographs from the field.

Portland Timbers are in the USSF Division Two, USL Conference for 2010. Their regular season starts on 17 April v Rochester. I expect dozens will make the trip to see the old Cascadia rivalry. No word yet on the US Open Cup schedule for 2010.

Many MLS sides are starting to open up a single preseason match as a Charity Shield event, hopefully next year we see different teams.

Thoughts on seeing the Timbers in a "friendly?"

stoked

Hope I can make it! wonder how much they are going to open up. I think 67,000 is a bit unrealistic, though.

I hope the money for WA Youth Soccer...

will go for scholarships for players to play on select clubs. I stopped playing 10 years ago and I can’t believe how expensive it is now. I’m not sure I would have been able to play, and I wasn’t even on one of the state’s big (more expensive) clubs.

Attendance

There must be some kind of cut-off for what the Sounders expect for attendance, otherwise they would just have it at Starfire. I’m sure Friday night is a big part of it, most US Open Cup matches were middle of the week and at Starfire.

What the hell

I’ll give a SounderAtHeart T-Shirt to the commenter that gets “closest to the pin” with attendance for this match. Not a Price is Right type, but who ever is closest to announced number in stadium.

How long is this contest open?

To make it really hard you could make entries due by the ticket on sale start.

Good Call

Wed 10AM is the cutoff

Closest to total announced attendance

You pick the shirt when you win

I'm in.

25,300. I don’t know why. Just seems about right.

First post on this blog

But for the chance at a shirt, why not. I’ll go with 18,736.

Probably way over, but it’s my lucky number.

As for the seating issue, would it be too off-the-wall to expect it to be “buy a ticket, pick your seat?” Probably impractical, but if every seat is $10…. Plus that would allow supporters to sit together.

24,909 ( sorry for posting twice, didn't want to miss a Tshirt on a techinicality )

24,909 Man, this is tough.

Is it too much to expect half of the regular season viewers 20k
Portland fans 5k
Extra people that cant afford to go to Sounders game ( especially bringing their kids ) 10k

That is probably a very ambitious, as for this low amount of money ( zero ), I don’t see them promoting it. I will go with a better than any MLS team regular season game….24,909

my hypothesis:
(timbers + pre-season excitement + price) > (weeknight + friendly status of match + not included w/season tix) = solid attendance

I’m really curious how many are going to show up for this. I’m sure the Sounders marketing team will get behind this and get people out for the good cause.

Hmmmm.

This is really tough but since its a preseason friendly I will go with 19,987

Factors arguing for a big gate: match is against Portland, tickets are inexpensive.

Factors arguing for a small gate: match is a preseason friendly, weeknight, spring is cold in Seattle.

You think there will be a live stream on SSFC’s site? That’d be cool. I’d watch. It’s gonna be tough to get lots to travel up on a work night from Portland.

You better give me the shirt if I guess right! It’ll be my disguise when I’m visiting in July…;)
It’s going to be a heck of a lot of fun up there in the PacNW when Portland and Vancouver come in. It would be sweet if Eastern conference teams could make a “swing” through in future years, as well Western teams doing one through DC, Philly, and New Jersey. It would make for some awesome vacation plans for some Fanatical travel support. Two weeks out that way in the middle of summer would be a blast.

by DadRyan on Feb 9, 2010 2:59 PM PST reply actions

If you win

You will get the shirt.1 isn’t even sounders themed, so you could just but it now ;)

But yeah a10 day swing to hit 3 markets in one trip could work well.

Weeknight. I hope we blow it out of the water, but that’s my pick. I know I’m jacking up “Charles J”, but there it is. :)
