The Rapids are really busting out some great ideas. Terraces, 4$ beer, 5$ food, ticketless entry.

But it isn't just Colorado who has decided that they are tired of losing money.

The Revolution are kicking their ticketing buzz up a bit too. They launched a referral program, with a hell of a peak prize - trip to the All Star Game.

The down attendance hit every team last year. Back in 2007 there were only 3 profitable teams according to Forbes (likely 7 of 14 if you count SUM money), but in 2009 due to that 12% decrease in attendance for returning clubs only 2 turned a pre-SUM profit. Somewhere around 6-9 did when couning SUM dollars. The Rapids and Revolution are two teams hovering just under profitability, and a bump of butts in the seats would push them over that margin.

Sounders aren't having any problems by the way

Two matches are essentially sold out, and less than 1,000 of 35,500 seats remain for the other 13 home games.

I'm glad to see CO pushing for a better atmosphere and higher attendance.

This is a real terrace, right? They’re going to sell beer for $4 and have a real terrace? Sounds like trouble…

Reasonable moves, but...

This isn’t really going to do the job for these teams. It might help the Revs a little, but the Rapids have never given their fans a reason to come out. No truly recognizable names on the offensive end (you could argue that their two biggest names, to US soccer fans in Denver, would be Balboa and Mastroeni) and their constant mediocrity are a bad combination. From the outside looking in, the Rapids as an organization seem happy merely existing.

It’s not just that they’ve never made themselves a truly good team; neither has NY or Dallas. The problem is that they don’t even project any real ambition. Say what you will about NY, but they’ve certainly been aggressive about being a prestigious team in MLS. They fail at it every time, but you can’t say they aren’t trying. Colorado is so uninspiring precisely because their loftiest goal seems to be to just not suck that much. After this many years, it’s probably pretty hard to get excited if you’re an actual Rapids fan, let alone a casual Denver sports fan trying to figure out what to do on a Saturday night.

Seattle's effect on the SUM

If most teams are close to profitable before SUM, I wonder how many were truely bumped into profitable by Seattles contributions last year?

Seattle didn't really influence SUM income

As SUM is from non-MLS events (1 of the friendlies was a SUM event)

SUM has rights to USA Nat Team games, TV for World Cup, Confeds Cup, Mexican National team when in USA and some visiting Euro teams.

This is incredible

I wish we had some of these benefits in Seattle. The bring a friend thing probably wouldn’t work given every game is sold out, but the fan events on field, pregame stuff, and cheaper food/drinks? Sign me up. Although on the other hand I’m glad they haven’t had to resort to these things here. I’m guessing Colorado’s in dire straits.

Possibly

I think the on-field and pre-game stuff would be a big draw for families and maybe up sales a few thousand. Cheap beer and food wouldn’t attract more season ticket holders in my opinion. The rest seem sort of unfeasible for various reasons.

I think the best way to sustain growth is to expand local coverage of the games, (like, more than a 15 second mention on the 11:00 news of the game, more radio sports personalities talking about it, whatever) and to continue to have successful seasons. Then as a result, up the capacity 5-6000 seats.

My greatest fear is that there are fair-weather fans who will bail the isntant we have a bad season.

Questions and comment

Did Forbes put out another report on MLS teams revenue ?

Do you know how the ticket sales for the Charity game are going ?
I can’t support this site if I need to buy my own T-Shirt.

The Sounders need to open up more seats if they sell out soon. Seriously. We have a chance to become a real team with MAJOR league attendance…just do it. I like the idea of opening one section at a time and not open any new sections 2 weeks before the game.

1- No more recent report. I’m trying to get more details to for a 2009 version.
2- I will ask, but don’t know at this time. You will never need to buy your own shirt to support this site, but you should.

First two games sold out

I guess we don’t need a Forbes report to know the Sounder’s are rollin’ in it.

I meant if I have to buy my own TShirts, I will have to go back to work and not post so much. Judging by some of my friends taking their whole family, my prediction might be in big trouble.
