Timbers @ Sounders Open Thread - Your thoughts, your analysis

There is a starting role up for grabs, at least in the early going, in the Right Midfield. Also, the Sounders have plenty of issues with their depth and cover, particularly at LM and RB, while it is likely that a Center back goes to the IL, or just gets cut, but this match is about more than mere roster space.

It is the continuation of a legacy of soccer in America that actually stetches back more than a single generation. It is a rivalry game, regardless of status as a pre-season tuneup, or as a friendly. The Portland Timbers faithful hate Seattle Sounders and the Seattle Sounders supporters laugh at a club that has struggled for trophies.

Tonight though, the MATCH is a bit secondary. First off all tickets sold are for charity. Secondly is the news that the Union is willing to strike.

But tonight, the Sounders look to pass average MLS attendance for a preseason match, when stars aren't likely to see more than a half. If you aren't there, you can catch glimpses on KONG 6/16, or on live blogs on Sounders FC.com, or Seattle Times, or at Prost Amerika.

Here today, we provide your place for instant analysis and dreams of when soccer in American isn't fliriting with Russian Roulette.

Timbers are on Right Wing radio

And I don’t mean a right sided player like Zakuani is on the Left

If you can listen to coverage from the opposition with adverts/promos for the political right, this should have some coverage, at least according to the Timbers facebook posting.

Lesser team looked to have won today.

Sounders spent a ton of time in the opposition’s box.

by BrianL on Mar 11, 2010 7:56 PM PST up reply actions

Cronin is the man

I can’t believe an MLS team hasn’t picked him up or made some kind of offer. Seen him play a few times, his skill is beyond his years. Although he did have a few slipups where he got lucky someone else was able to clear, or his foot deflected the shot.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 11, 2010 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

Not convinced

about Brad Evans – RB.

I thought Souter looked OK, Ljungberg is still the most creative player on the field, Hurtado is still one of the top defenders in MLS, and Vagenas is still a waste of a roster space that could go to someone younger and cheaper.

The whole thing brought up bad memories of the home scoring drought last summer, but at least they were creating opportunities, unlike many of those games. Late in the second half they were parked in the Timbers box and seemed a bit unfortunate not to put one in.

I remember at least twice (3X?) in the 1st half someone got behind the defense on the wing, but got cut off in the corner and couldn’t do anything because no one was making a hard run towards goal. I get yelled at by my teammates on my over-30 rec league team if I take a play off instead of looking for the cross at the far post. I hope Sigi had some words about that because it seemed particularly inexcusable.

Nkufo can't arrive too soon

If he can replicate the kind of goal scoring prowess the highlight videos show, he’ll be just what the Sounders need.

by CarlosT on Mar 11, 2010 9:07 PM PST reply actions

It was frustrating

to be there, and that makes 180 scoreless minutes vs. lower division teams.

They were in the box a lot, but the shots never came. Or they came too late. All of a sudden there would be nine white shirts clogging the area. The Sounders never had a chance as good as Portland’s. There were close ones, but not clear, easy chances.

It was nice to stand in the fifth row, though. It felt fancy. But I like the 214.

by Cornchops on Mar 11, 2010 9:59 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Quick rundown of my thoughts

Terrible game. We seemed to keep the ball mostly in their half, but left some ugly opportunities for them, one resulting in goal and several more that should’ve. Everybody played disjointedly.

Passing was terrible on so many levels. Every pass seemed to either go straight to a Timber, or was at the heels of one of our sprinting forwards, or was to nobody. Yeah I get it, it was raining. But I feel like pros should be able to step things up a bit and not look like a high school team.

There seemed to be several wasted opportunities with shots on goal. Or, beautiful crosses to nobody because nobody was waiting in the box.

Quick player rundown:

Montero: Absolute dead weight. Terrible. Nkufo can’t get here fast enough.
Evans: As far as ball skills, good. As far as anything else, horrible.
Vagenas: Nothing to write home about. Did a good job directing and trying to make things happen
Alonso: Sloppy, mostly ineffective
Marshall: Mostly brought it
Ljungberg: Looked like a Premier League player trying to string things together with a high school team
Levesque: Instantly effective, as usual
Estrada: The new Le Toux
Parke: Best new defensive face I’ve seen. Sign this guy
Souter: Ineffective, but not terrible. I’d pass on him
Hurtado: Solid, but made some really, really dumb mistakes

We looked like a team that was afraid to go past midfield and get into the box to score. It was a bunch of pass it forward, pass it back, clear it into the Timbers’ defense/midfield line.

On the plus side, I got to experience life outside of the GA section. It was nice to be behind the players’ benches. But I missed the GA atmosphere.

Closing thoughts: I hope to God this is not what we look like this season. I really, really hope this was a laid back, lazy game for them to get back into things.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 11, 2010 10:13 PM PST reply actions

Estrada = Le Toux?

That’s a shame, from reports it sounds like Estrada has some technical skills.

By that I mean

He’s the guy who’s constantly running around and giving the defense hell. He did have a lot more technical ability than Le Toux had that I’ve ever seen.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 12, 2010 7:44 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed almost 100%

Ljungberg fit right in on the high school team. I don’t think he even tried.
There were some/many of his passes to noone that were Zakuani’s “standing there doing nothing” fault. But still doesn’t he have any pride in a game like that. I just couldn’t let a seemingly mediocre Timber’s team beat me, even if it is pickup game in the park.

You didn’t have a comment on Steve Z, understandable. Most probably didn’t realize he played yesterday.

Sigi and Schmetzer need to work some magic, or pray for a strike.

by Charles J on Mar 12, 2010 7:21 AM PST up reply actions

Forgot about Zakuani

He was another disappointment. He didn’t even do his usual work-each-defender-one-by-one stuff.

I thought Ljungberg had the right ideas with most of the stuff he did. There were some slipups, but overall I thought most of what he did was good. It just never worked out, because nobody was running. It was infuriating watching everybody standing around, not getting open, not being in the box, etc while one guy was trying to take out three defenders at once.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 12, 2010 7:46 AM PST up reply actions

Just got back home from the game.

It sure didn’t look like 18k people, I thought there were more. Weather was miserable, but I still had a good time. I saw a LOT of crosses into the box for us find nobody, and a lot of runs that should have been made.

The good news is, there were only a couple of times when we passed instead of shot, and a few times when we shot and should have passed.

Portland seemed compact in the back, and the two times I saw goal scoring chances for them, it was on the break. It’s so frustrating to watch, frankly. I hate that the style can be effective against us, it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

by Murk on Mar 11, 2010 10:29 PM PST reply actions

You know who kept ruining our chances

was that #98 defender. Don’t know his name, but he was a fricken wall. Every cross seemed to find him where he headed it to safety. He was incredible. He and Cronin are being wasted playing for a USL team.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 12, 2010 8:00 AM PST up reply actions

WTF

I’m doing my best not to completely lose my s#*t over this match and the fact we haven’t scored in 180 minutes against 2nd division opponents…

It is… uhhh… disappointing — yeah, lets just go with that — what I say today…

As usual, i thought the crowd did their part, and there is a LOT I could say about what I saw on the field, and where certain players were lined up, and whatnot, but it was a freakin’ preseason match so its best not to dwell on any of that.

I will also disagree that there is an “opening” at RM. I think that spot will ultimately filled on a “rotational” basis, like last year, by Ljungberg, Montero, Evans, Estrada, Jacqua…
It’s like we’ve discussed in these forums before, in that it is not a “traditional” RM position. What the Sounders do is very much more like a 4-2-3-1 than a 4-4-2/4-5-1 type, and the LM and RM in this are very much “withdrawn wingers,” if you will, which is to say they are attacking players who line up deeper than traditional wingers.

...that's MISTER Keller to you!!!

by malcontentjake on Mar 11, 2010 10:37 PM PST reply actions

Our passing

was really nice, I thought. That’s how we dominated possession. But the finishing was more of the same.

The problem is, MLS teams are happy to clog the box too.

by Cornchops on Mar 11, 2010 10:38 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Really?

I thought it was dismal. I’m still trying to figure out how we kept most of the possession and the ball mostly on the Timbers’ side. Timbers’ passing was terrible also, but we made some huge fatal mistakes that let them in.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 12, 2010 7:47 AM PST up reply actions

There were several

one-touch sequences that left the Timbers running in circles. But everything resulted in the same thing, which was nothing. But if you’re trying to figure out how we kept most of the possession, it’s because we were passing nicely.

I doubt the Timbers strung three passes together more than a couple of times. That’s why we kept the ball mostly on their side.

While they were lucky to win, they used the same tactics MLS teams used against us at home last year. Namely, make it impossible to take a good shot. It’s hard to shoot through nine defenders. It’s hard to pass through nine defenders. Nine defenders in a penalty box are very annoying. But clearly very effective against us.

And when we push, then the counter can get us. It seemed exactly like the NE home game last year.

Parke was strong. Estrada was encouraging. I like them. Souter=Le Toux, for me. Lots of running, not much touch. I doubt he makes the team.

by Cornchops on Mar 12, 2010 8:51 AM PST up reply actions

Agree

with your thoughts on Parke, Estrada, and Souter. If we could combine Souter and Evans into one, we’d have a deadly combo. Evans’ ball handling skills with Souter’s speed would be incredible. But as it is, neither is very impressive.

I did see some beginnings of brilliant plays going on, especially towards the end of the first half and a good chunk of the second half, but ultimately they ended up with nothing. I like what you said about their tactics by loading up the box, because that’s exactly what was happening. It was literally 8 or 9 guys on our 3 or 4. We’d cross, but it’d just end up on 98’s head, save a few nice plays from Levesque.

Again though…I really, really hope we bring it at the opener and the rest of the season. With teams like San Jose beating Premier League reserves and NY destroying decent teams like Toronto, from what I’ve seen it doesn’t look good for us. Maybe we need to get Neagle in to work some magic? Never thought I’d hear myself saying that…

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 12, 2010 9:32 AM PST up reply actions

Great atmosphere

Obviously, not a great result. Thought Estrada looked real strong. Lots of opportunities in the final 20 minutes. Very impressed with the size and energy of the crowd, all things considered.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 11, 2010 10:52 PM PST reply actions

well...

Portland has a BIG team. We looked like a bunch of midgets out there against them.

I thought Portland played a good road game. Hunkered back in defence, didn’t allow much in terms of dangerous opportunities, and scored on a counter. Should have had a second near the end.

I thought Evans was our best player, he looked good both at right back and when he moved up into the midfield (I’m not sure why others are being critical). Parke also looked good. I thought Gonzalez played well in the second half. Estrada really looked nervous and kind of out of place out there. Souter looks fit, but clearly hasn’t played with the team much and often looked a little lost positionally, in one case Evans made a really good overlap and had tons of space but Souter didn’t pick up his head and spot him. But he does look like he has the ability to be an MLS player (I say all this and have no idea about his background…where did he come from?).

Montero had some chemistry issues with others out there. In one case Ljungberg made a good run and Montero decided to shoot it and Ljungberg looked more than a little peaved. In another case Zakuani played it into the middle and reacted like he expected Montero to be there (instead, no one was there and it looked bad). Generally, Montero didn’t move the ball fast enough after he received it and it often seemed to kill momentum.

Sturgis and Fuctio didn’t play. I was hoping to see both of them.

Only other thought I have from that game is there is no way we can ever make that one up. Portland walked into our house as a tier 2 team and walked out with a win. They’ll always be able to hold that one over us…

by PeterJH on Mar 11, 2010 10:53 PM PST reply actions

Peter, I think you worry too much about what Portland thinks about this game

If this were a regular season game, I would agree with you that Portland can hold this over the Sounders head. But, it is not. It is a preseason game. It would be like taking your sister to the prom and then bragging to everyone that your date is prettier than theirs.

If a meaningless preseason game is all that Portland has to look forward to and brag about, they are welcome to it.

by Coug1990 on Mar 12, 2010 7:05 AM PST up reply actions

Keep kidding yourself...

Every match in a heated rivalry counts. It’s awfully convenient to say it doesn’t matter when you lose. You’d call me a sore loser if I claimed that the Open Cup didn’t matter after we lost it last year right?

by DadRyan on Mar 12, 2010 9:17 AM PST up reply actions

To be fair...

Equating a game in an actual tournament and one in which neither of the two teams have anything material to play for is not exactly an even comparison. Great win for the Timbers. Not sure it’s that big of a loss for the Sounders.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 12, 2010 9:38 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

In the grand scheme of things

it doesn’t matter. But as far as stoking the rivalry, it totally does. If we had won, we’d have rubbed it in their faces just as they are now to us. Players probably don’t care so much since it doesn’t matter to them. I think the rivalries are mostly in the stands, not so much on the field.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 12, 2010 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

Pretty much agree

I guess I should have said: Great win for the Timbers. Great win for the Timbers fans. Bad loss for Sounders fans. Not that big of a deal for the Sounders.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 12, 2010 1:38 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly. Fans always care more about rivalries than players.

Does anyone think Freddie Ljungberg lost any sleep over this loss? Fredy Montero? Kasey Keller?

Go through the entire roster and I doubt more than three players might care (Scott, Graham and Levesque) are the only players that may really care about the rivalry, but I doubt even they care that much.

This was a preseason game and the players know that.

by Coug1990 on Mar 12, 2010 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

I just wanted to say,

That Jeff Parke looked fantastic in the back, he even contributed quite well on the offensive side of things. We should sign him for sure if we can. I might already be willing to put him ahead of Tyronne in the pecking order. He really looked that good. Great in the air, he had a sweet leave off in front of goal.

by Perrinbar on Mar 11, 2010 11:00 PM PST reply actions

Parke was insane!

I admit not giving him a chance after his virtual banishment from the steroid scandal and then his subsequent years as a USL player. But he was incredible. We definitely need to sign him. I wouldn’t mind seeing him replace Marshall either, but maybe after Marshall retires :)

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 12, 2010 7:49 AM PST up reply actions

I was really impressed with Parke – he really looked good out there – and I also thought that Estrada did pretty well. I think he’ll see a decent amount of time as a sub this season. He was faster than I thought, for one, and made a couple of decent runs off the ball that I noticed as well as passing well and keeping possession well. I think he’ll be a good signing. Give him a couple years to develop and he could be great.

by Nevtelen on Mar 12, 2010 7:21 AM PST reply actions

I didn't see the game, but from reading the comments

I think that what really happened here is that the off the field issues is affecting the on the field play. How could it not?

The players just voted to strike and it was announced yesterday. The strike date is just a few weeks away. I can guarantee you, that not every player’s head was in the game.

For Portland, this was a HUGE game for them and business as usual. There is no strike for them and they will go back to playing in their piddling (but still playing) league.

by Coug1990 on Mar 12, 2010 7:21 AM PST reply actions

I hope the owners realize how disastrous a strike would be

Make whatever concessions have to be made, because the entire product is dead if there’s a prolonged work stoppage.

by lemonverbena on Mar 12, 2010 8:01 AM PST up reply actions

The league is not profitable though.

If anything the players should force the league to market itself better with the chance of a financial return in the near future.

by Sec 108 on Mar 12, 2010 9:11 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed. But it's the owners and the lower-echelon players who have everything to lose

The better players will catch on with overseas clubs. Owners seem to be left with a choice: meet the players halfway and keep working towards profitability (which finally looks possible with the success of Sounders FC), or hold their ground and kill MLS.

by lemonverbena on Mar 12, 2010 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

My thoughts

Does anyone on this team know how to run onto a cross? Evans sent cross after cross into to box in the second half (I was in the southeast corner so this occurred right in front of me), only to have it met by guys standing flat-footed, trying to nod it in with no velocity.

We might have a great defense over the course of a season, but holy crap, they seem to make at least one mid-bogglingly dumb error per match.

Keller must have been going nuts back there, he was probably doing nothing for about 88 minutes, with the other 2 having Timbers running right at him.

Yep, tonight, we got Evil Fredy. Got frustrated early, stood around alot, didn’t contribute much of anything. That said Levesque couldn’t generate much either despite all his effort.

Souter did nothing to impress me, looked mildly clueless. Yes, he’s new with no familiarity with the team, but might as well stick with Sturgis in my mind.

Estrada has good speed and some nifty dribbling skills. With the ball skills, he could be a step up from Le Toux and is much cheaper. He’s got to learn he can’t dribble past 4 guys at this level though.

I agree with the other posters, Parke should make the team easily. He was winning headers in the midfield consistently, made some good runs out of the back, showed good touch on his passes to Evans up the right side. He’s our #4 centerback in my mind.
