MLS CBA teleconference game thread

We will be on the conference call. Don't necessarily plan on asking any questions, but if something is really being begged to be asked, we'll have that option.

You can listen at www.MLSnet.com to their feed there.

By the way, you may have notice that BayAreaRefugee has hosted a vast majority of the CBA themed post over these past few weeks. He's on the call, while I (Dave Clark) will be listening, chiming in with comments in the thread, and doing house work as well :(

Sounders have three players in attendence - Riley, Graham and Keller. Some players will be interviewed and the league will post videos of those later today.

Wow 100 journalists on call

Maybe I won’t be asking questions. Also, looks like it won’t start for another five minutes. Cohen, Foose and Garber are all going to speak.

Now 150 journalists

Who says no one cares about MLS?

25 players flew in

“Never seen a group of players more committed.” Don Garber.

Do it in evolutionary way, not revolutionary way

Provides players with more money, more rights, more ability to move.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:16 AM PDT reply actions

More money, more quality of life, more rights

Allowing more movement

Details

Majority will have guaranteed contracts, improved movement, compensation increased substatinally, increased opportunity to work together

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:21 AM PDT reply actions

Q&A should get some details out

And I expect them to post it online shortly as well.

Majority of Players with Guarantee Contracts

That stuns me. Stuns.

I can’t wait to see the details on that.

Curious what that means

I can’t imagine whole contracts are guaranteed. But, that’s what it implies, I guess.

George Cohen speaks

75th anniversary of Wagner Act, which made Collective Bargainning go

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:23 AM PDT reply actions

Sounds like maybe

yes on guaranteed contracts, to a degree.

No on free agency.

That’s what compromise looks like.

by Cornchops on Mar 20, 2010 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

Grant Wahl

Bob and Don: One of the main issus is free agency, what are you takes on resolution?
Don: The elephant in the room, players will have greater rights at end of agreements but WON’T be free agents.

well played

no longer a floating waiver process. Was a UNION idea.

I wonder what happens with players this year- say Jeff Parke?

I would think the league would allow the teams to resign players if they can’t i guess they would go into the re-entry draft

by gstommylee on Mar 20, 2010 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I think re-entry draft will start end of this season.

by gstommylee on Mar 20, 2010 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

AFter season

won’t have floating waiver process. Will have opportunity to select out-of-contract players. Union apparently came up with idea.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:30 AM PDT reply actions

Still being worked out

Foose: Don’t get everything you want. We think we made some real improvements. We will be talking about details later. As a whole very pleased. We have some real benefits to players.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:31 AM PDT reply actions

USA Today question

Garber: Pressure of deadlines tends to produce results (what a lame question)

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:32 AM PDT reply actions

Goff: Give us the scene the last couple of days

Garber: Not been to something quite like this. Players got in on Wednesday. Were here til 3 on Thursday, til 6 a.m. yesterday.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:34 AM PDT reply actions

Garber: Committee understand the issues

Thinking about all players. Not fun. Very productive. Don’t want to do it like this again.
Foose: Leadership by players has been nothing short of extraordinary.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:35 AM PDT reply actions

Foose: One anecdote that struck me...

After MLS Cup had 9-hour meeting. Had five players who were in game the night before. No other group of athletes who would have that level of committment (probably true).

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:36 AM PDT reply actions

Cohen: Momentum was key

Want constructive atmosphere before you address big issues.

In terms of re-entry draft, what improves things for players. What about Int’l situation when players return?

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:39 AM PDT reply actions

Foose

Re-entry draft won’t give details now, will in a few days. Great movement on salary front. No details. (No answer)

Foose: Majority of players will have guaranteed contracts, what are criteria. No details.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:40 AM PDT reply actions

Need time to put all details together

What was tipping point? Bob: We on union side never questioned committment of league (really?)

Was there ever a point that you thought it wouldn’t come together?

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:43 AM PDT reply actions

Boston Globe guy

Don, can you estimate what cost of strike would have been?

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:44 AM PDT reply actions

Garber: Don't know if it comes down to calculating costs

We have some momentum. We have new teams. Hard to quantify. Don’t think players wanted to go on strike. Know owners didn’t want them to go on strike. The part of process that is positive is coming together. I’m commish for players, too. Our players have never been viewed as us as employees.

give us idea of how much salary budget has increased? Does new agreement preserve single-entity?

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:47 AM PDT reply actions

Don: We wouldn't agree if didn't think it was manageable.

Will release details …. (lots of broad strokes). Single-entity remains. Not system that is important. It’s how we manage business. Think we addressed player concerns.

Can you see that turning around in near future

Hopefully. Don’t think any investor would get involved otherwise. Needed to be able to utilize limited resources. Players recognized that. Need to grow ratings and attendance. Re-entry will help that … hopefully in five years all teams make money.

Only one detail we really need right now

There will be a game next Thursday. :)

These updates are great though, hopefully this provides the stability necessary to keep the league growing, while proving the players the freedom to feel like they can control their own destiny.

Liz Mullen, then Landon speaks

SBJ: Players will have greater movement? What’s that mean? Will players have movement at prime of career. Answer: There will be no bidding. At end of agreements will have option of going into re-entry draft.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:56 AM PDT reply actions

Landon talks

From players perspective. We are a lot more knowledgeable and a lot more appreciative of how difficult process was. Generally speaking, commish’s aren’t invovled. Don has showed great committment and we are appreciative. Wouldn’t have gotten deal without mediators. This can all be a positive. Maybe most important thing. Will have real relationship with league. Having real leadership is real important. A lot of guys accept status quo. Ours don’t. Fight for what they believe.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 10:59 AM PDT reply actions

Canadian media question

Any room for changes to designated player rule? Answer: Wasn’t part of CBA. Broadly, our hope is that we can have system to expand the rule. That decision needs to get made, but haven’t done that yet. Our hope is that we can develop business that supports greater revenues. We need to grow our business.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 11:01 AM PDT reply actions

Hopefully we’ll be able to get you some details in the next few days. WE’RE PLAYING SOCCER!!!!

by gstommylee on Mar 20, 2010 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

maybe that was for myself...

After the past few weeks, I just want to know for my own sake. I realize a lot of people are just happy and don’t really care about how the sausage gets made. Only one important thing here, no doubt.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 20, 2010 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh sure it would be nice to know what the new CBA included but i’m just more revealed that there will be a season.

Some great news to get up to this morning!

by Nevtelen on Mar 20, 2010 11:39 AM PDT reply actions

A great way to start the weekend

I had lost hope after staying up till about 2am last night scouring the net to see if there was any sign of an agreement. After a short time of sleep when the baby woke up, I got a text from my friend saying a deal was tentatively reached. I’m pumped. I was really, really afraid this would be the beginning of the end of pro soccer in the US.

First kick is going to be in-f’ing-sane!

in some weird way

it almost makes the beginning of the season more exciting. Emphasis on almost.
