Quick Thoughts: Sounders Smash Union 2-0

This is a quick snapshot, based off of my live thoughts of the match.

Sounders moved the ball well when attacking. Quick, but under control. Alonso really sparked the ball movement in the back, and while Brad Evans won the Man of the Match I would be tempted to give it to Osvaldo. He was the catalyst both ways.

MLS is still quite a physical league, but Zakuani and Ljungberg seem better able to deal with that this season. And while Nowak doesn't like the supposedly dishonest nature of Montero and Ljungberg, he's the man who drafted A.Moreno.

Zakuani had several moments of magic. Ljungberg not being on the scoreboard is a disappointment. Both substitutes played very well. Nyassi was stronger in his vision and ball presence than at any point in the past season plus I have seen him. Fucito made several good runs, fought desperately for the ball after losing it, and had a few solid moments that showed potential for the future.

Scott took a while to get comfortable, and it was his performance that got the strongest after Philly went down a man. He also rode Seb Le Toux like cowboy rides a mustang.

Levesque missed a couple that should have been in the net.

Overall still a good night for the Sounders to start off 2010. Three points, +2 Goal Differential.

    Montero
    Ljungberg
Zakuani   Nyassi (60)   Levesque
Fucito (76)   Evans
    Alonso
Gonzalez       Scott
  Hurtado   Marshall
    Keller

Here are the stats as according to www.SoundersFC.com

Sounders
Union
2
Goals 0
12 Shots 9
3 Shots on Goal 4
4 Saves 1
13 Fouls 8
9 Corner Kicks 6
3 Offsides 2

Upcoming I'll have fuller thoughts based on a second viewing, updated statistics and hopefully an interview or two.

29 matches to go.

Oh, and thanks to the 30+ that showed up in the private room at Elysian Fields today for pre-match. We are looking at doing more of that this year.

These are my Sounders

I’m so glad to see the boys back after what I saw against Portland. My quick thoughts:

On Seattle:
Riley – Missed him while Scott was getting his footing. Was not missing him after he got things settled
Nyassi – Forgot how solid this guy is. Made a couple dumb mistakes trying to fake people out and got the ball taken away, but otherwise was an incredible sub
Hurtado – Awesome
Alonso – Awesome
Levesque – Effective. Wish he could’ve kept that one down
Montero – Had moments of genius and total failure. The diving header was incredible. I need to see replays of that again
Evans – I hate on this guy so much, but he played really well finally. Reminds me of the first 5-6 games of last season before his callup. I hope he keeps this going

Overall, I thought we played good, solid, and organized. I’d have liked to see what the score would’ve been without the rain. I feel like the rain messes with some of our ball control. Everybody seemed to look like they were back in the swing of things, although it looked like they were a little rusty and needed to get their nerves, playing for the first time since 2009 in front of the full crowd.

On Philly:
I thought Le Toux played better than I’d ever seen him play while with us. I was glad to see him in a starter position. He was all over the place as usual. Philly in general was a pretty dirty team. We watched Nyassi get plowed towards the end of the game in the box by an arm to his face with no call. Stahl gets ejected, rightfully so. The short little guy Roger Torres also rightfully got his yellow. And I was ecstatic to see Moreno get one. I hate that guy. Overally I think Philly played decently for an expansion team. They had some decent attacking opportunities. I was surprised to see Mwanga taken out at the half. He seemed mostly non-threatening though.

Mwanga was also playing out of position he was playing at college. I think the union’s mistake that they played him at the mid.

Traffic sucked,

and I missed the first 20.

I thought our ball control was poor, and we could have had a lot more chances with some better touches. Passing was nice.

Philly played to score/win, and that made it easy for us to play our game. Unfortunately, their experience will probably lead other teams to go back to the bunker strategy, which we struggle against.

Levesque’s misses should satisfy the anti-Jaqua crowd. [Just stirring the pot]

Freddie and Zak both seemed tougher on the ball. That’s going to be huge for us.

Love the Sounders. Love the win.

Levesque didn’t look so hot as a wide midfielder. He was pinching into the middle creating a serious log jam. If you watch the replay you’ll notice we moved up the right side of the field a ton because the left side was so jammed with defenders. Unfortunately Roger wasn’t out wide for a majority of the night. I’m not sold on him as a starter. I am, however, really looking forward to our offense once Nkufo shows up.

I was impressed by what little we saw of Fucito. He seemed to find the right spaces and got a couple good shots off. Unfortunate that the one shot didn’t get called for a handball…

Nyassi looked pretty good technically beating players but he almost seems the new Montero trying to do everything himself when he should be looking for a pass.

I was really impressed with Montero’s performance out there last night. He did almost everything the way he should. Holding up the ball, looking for the pass, and got that opportunistic goal. He also did some hustling back to help defend. I hope we see a lot more of this from him during the rest of the season… it’ll help the Sounders score a lot more.

It’s too bad Levesque didn’t put those two pretty easy chances away… or at least on net. I think he did ok for the most part. I’m not sure who would replace him right now. I guess Estrada is a possibility, but you know Levesque is going to work and he did a decent job I general.

It will be awesome to see what happens when Nkufo gets here though.

Fucito did pretty decent/good in his first MLS game. The fact he has tapes to look at now to see what he needs to do better. Fucito by most refs would have earned a PK for Seattle for that handball in the box.

Not a sounders supporter

but mark me as someone who likes their squad after watching the opener. First off your fans are simply fucking amazing, such a cool atmosphere and it’s obvious that the league has a fanbase to be the face of the league now which is really cool.

Although it was a sloppy game, especially after watching EPL and Champions League action for months now, Seattle provided good moments throughout the game. I really like watching Montero play too.

I’m in the KC area so I’ll be supporting the Wizards but it’s easy to root for this Seattle squad as well, especially since they look like they’ll be near the top of the standings. Good luck this year!

I had the same thought too

about coming back to MLS after tiding myself over with EPL in the offseason.

KC is one of my favorite teams to watch. Arnaud and Wolff are awesome. They make things interesting and exciting
