Beasley on a loan from Rangers?

by Alan Hudson on Mar 4, 2010 9:41 AM PST reply actions

Maybe

Seattle is hosting MLS Cup again ?

I do think that will happen.
It is a major announcement.

by Charles J on Mar 4, 2010 9:49 AM PST reply actions

listening?

Is there any way to listen in? Is it streamed?

by ethulin on Mar 4, 2010 9:51 AM PST reply actions

no MLS Cup for you

I love your city, but after forcing the thousands of fans from Salt Lake and the hundreds from LA to sit in the upper deck to watch their team, I don’t think the cup will be coming your way again anytime soon. Or at least not part of a season ticket package. Expect the Cup to be either in New York (new stadium) or Philly (new team, new stadium).

by denz on Mar 4, 2010 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

Doubt it will be MLS Cup

That’ll almost certainly be in the Red Bulls new stadium. Or Philadelphia.

by The King of Norway on Mar 4, 2010 9:54 AM PST reply actions

It would be a League announcement not Seattle announcement if it was the MLS cup.

by gstommylee on Mar 4, 2010 9:54 AM PST reply actions

Probably right

But it might be the package they are announcing like Robert said.
The only problem is I don’t see Man U coming here and not playing in LA too.
So does LA have an announcement planned ?

Maybe they are opening more seats ? 4 minutes.

Sounders add striker

Blaise N’Kufo will join the team after playing for Switzerland in the World Cup and adds a veteran with a scorers mentality.

by ethulin on Mar 4, 2010 10:04 AM PST reply actions

Now that is more like it.

by gstommylee on Mar 4, 2010 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

YES

This is what I was hoping to hear.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 4, 2010 10:12 AM PST up reply actions

N'Kufo!

This a great signing. Fills the number 9 shirt perfectly, allowing Montero to move back to the wing.

He didn't go.

by BUCKETSinSB on Mar 4, 2010 10:44 AM PST reply actions

Montero moving back?

Could you explain this a bit more?
My guess was that Montero and Nkufo would make up the 2 in the 4-4-2, with Jaqua on the right and Ljungberg as an attacking mid.

Or

be Montero’s replacement when we likely lose him next year…

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 4, 2010 10:51 AM PST up reply actions

Sounders FC is too smart,

Not to have a younger player lined up to replace Freddy when he leaves.

He didn't go.

by BUCKETSinSB on Mar 4, 2010 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

But who is that person?

I know we’re not even into the season yet, but I wonder who that person will be. I’m no coach or expert by any means, but I figured a replacement would’ve been sought and integrated into the team by now. None of the people on the team currently look like any sort of sure-fire replacement. And although I will sing Levesque’s praises all day long, I can’t see him in that role as a starter.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 4, 2010 11:03 AM PST up reply actions

But he's a kid

playing in a 5th tier league and youth team. I hardly think he’s fit for replacing Montero.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 4, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

Montero won't leave until next winter.

That’s plenty of time to find someone.

/ at least I hope he doesn’t stab Seattle in the back and leave during the summer window.

He didn't go.

by BUCKETSinSB on Mar 4, 2010 11:29 AM PST up reply actions

4-2-3-1 arrow Sigi uses.

Kufo up top with Zak, Ljungberg, Montero left to right in support. Just my thoughts that Montero is best used in midfield and the wings rather than alone at striker.

He didn't go.

by BUCKETSinSB on Mar 4, 2010 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

Ah, I see where you are coming from.

Just to be clear, you are saying push Montero both back and right, correct?

by ethulin on Mar 4, 2010 11:12 AM PST up reply actions

Here is the depth chart and formation according to this site:

http://www.sounderatheart.com/2010/2/15/1311969/wahl-resigns-sounders-roster

So yes, back and to the right. The same spot he played to start last season. Jacqua on the other hand had a year to be the man scoring goals. He didn’t do it. And since he has no speed, he is a waste on the wing. Yes he’s expensive, I guess he’ll have to earn it as an hour-in sub/ Open Cup striker.

He didn't go.

by BUCKETSinSB on Mar 4, 2010 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

Jaqua didn't do it?

8 G and 8 A in league play.

Jaqua: .36 goals per 90
Montero: .49 goals per 90

I would say that is a significant difference.

by ethulin on Mar 4, 2010 11:35 AM PST up reply actions

Yes, compared to the top scorer on the team

He wasn’t as good.

Run the numbers comparing the 2nd best threat on Sounders to the rest of the League’s second best.

180 minutes, zero goals against Houston.

A change was needed in attack. 8 goals is nice but playing top forward inflates the numbers compared to his teammates. So 8 goals in how many minutes? Compared to other forwards in mls? As the fifth option in Seattle’s four-man attack he’s great. 8 goals off the bench is a nice problem to have. But I didn’t see the offense advancing through a hard to find target man.

He didn't go.

by BUCKETSinSB on Mar 4, 2010 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

Ran the numbers

And going off MLS’s site, it says Jaqua actually had 9 goals and 7 assists. There are four secondary players with comparable stats, but none of them have more goals and only two had more assists. Again, these are the second-best scorers their teams: Colorado’s Omar Cummings has fewer goals (8), but more assists (12); DC United’s Jaime Moreno the same number of goals (9), but fewer assists (3); New England’s Shalrie Joseph has one fewer goal (8) and one more assist (8); and Houston’s Brad Davis had fewer goals (5), but more assists (12).

If you combine goals and assists, Jaqua would have been top scorer for Chicago, Chivas USA, Columbus, DC United, Kanas City and San Jose, and would have been tied for the points lead in Real Salt Lake and New England. Or put another way, he would have been the top scorer on more than half the teams.

I can’t argue with “I know what my eyes saw”-type arguments and am not discounting your opinion, but the numbers say Jaqua was more than a “nice problem to have.”

Point is...

He seemed to have a good season, at least by the numbers.

by Jeremiah Oshan on Mar 4, 2010 1:14 PM PST up reply actions

Mistakes are remembered more than accomplishments

I remember loving Jaqua every time he scored or made an assist. But the constant fumbling of the ball in so many aspects really made me forget that he had a decent season.

by chrisperry1983 on Mar 4, 2010 1:19 PM PST up reply actions

Methodology

Though the analysis may come to the same conclusion, I take issue with the methodology.

What matters is points per minute per dollar. This tells you the value of the player. The problem is, Jaqua is paid a WHOLE lot (200k I think) and your analysis does not account for that. Also, your analysis may be insufficient as some players may be bench players and have significantly less playing time.

To figure out how good a value the strikers are, figure:
value=Goals/Minutes/Salary

I think this will show Jaqua to be a far less valuable player.

by ethulin on Mar 4, 2010 3:55 PM PST up reply actions

Jaqua?

Also, does Jaqua fit in that equation at all? If not… that is one expensive bench player…

by ethulin on Mar 4, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

Good signing

While he may be 35, it sounds like he will be a great fit with your squad. This should help prevent a home scoring drought this year.

by denz on Mar 4, 2010 10:54 AM PST reply actions

adds a dimension to our game we didn't have

And that we really could have used in that last game against Houston. If the ground game isn’t working, we now have someone who can win balls and create space in the box.

I think I like this signing a lot. Hope it works out!
