Gamethread: Match Day 3 Sounders at Real Salt Lake

Quick Reference Card for Sounders v Real Salt Lake

There's a party over there with ~150 traveling Sounders supporters. There's a party right here with many of you hanging out at the Elysian Fields watching with me, Jeremiah, Carlos, and Steve Clare of ProstAmerika.

We've previewed the match for you. Denz has answered three questions concerning Salt Lake. We are geared up and ready to go, a pint in hand with a Quick Reference Card as well.

Real Salt Lake is in the process of celebrating winning the MLS Cup last year.

Instant Analsys in the comments section as always

Lineups aren't out yet, but i fully expect Noonan to be the starter. We'll see what happens.

And its official Noonan gets the start

We should all expect to see at least one of Fucito/Levesque

Mister Yuk?!!?

Anyone know what that one was about?

by brokejumper on Apr 10, 2010 6:04 PM PDT reply actions

I'm guessing

a commentary on our team colors.

Marshall with a nice series of passes to the opposition

sure he kept winning the ball back, but that’s some poor passing

Beckerman gifts the Sounders a turnover

That corner could have been dangerous, but instead nothing.

one on one and Zakuani takes advantage

that was all about the pass really. Montero won that for him. Zakuani just finished.

The Human Cat can't quite stop it

And we’re on the board again after being blanked last match.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 6:20 PM PDT reply actions

The two Freddie's are not happy with each other

A couple times earlier in the game Montero ignored Ljungberg making some nice runs… I saw that one as payback. Mostly I think we still have Montero holding the ball too often and looking toomuch to create for himself.

by brokejumper on Apr 10, 2010 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

First Half performances feature Zakuani and Montero

Clearly the two best performers.

Montero has been great both on defense and offense, and this may be his most complete half yet.

Why is Keller so passive on corners

Seems like he is really rooted to the line this year on corners.

by blakec on Apr 10, 2010 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

Has he ever really come out?

I don’t recall him ever being much of a force in the air, even back to his European/Nat days.

by brokejumper on Apr 10, 2010 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't expect the 18 from him

But he is staying back on crosses on the six.

by blakec on Apr 10, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Back for the second half

Hopefully the storied high altitude factor doesn’t sink the Sounders.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 7:12 PM PDT reply actions

That pass should have gone to Ljungberg

He scores that opportunity if he gets the ball.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 7:22 PM PDT reply actions

The game has devolved into randomness

Not much focus from either team. This might be a good time for another sub.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 7:34 PM PDT reply actions

I agree

I’m not seeing a whole lot of good soccer here.

by zeeehjee on Apr 10, 2010 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Apparently our players believe their teammates are the Flash

Because there was no chance anyone was getting to that pass from Montero.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 7:36 PM PDT reply actions

Sigi takes another hit on the crack pipe

Sturgis for Montero? Really? There’s still a lot of time left to start defending full time.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 7:40 PM PDT reply actions

Good thought about the altitude

I’m personally happy with playing more defense. It happens to us often enough, and we’re on the road.

by magistermilitum on Apr 10, 2010 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

That is the complete opposite of my post.

I don’t think we should keep up the attacking nearly so much. Play for possession and prevent them from countering. If Lundberg gets any more breakaways, sure go for it, but we’re on the road in an environ we aren’t used to and have a great chance to add 3 points.

by magistermilitum on Apr 10, 2010 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Levesque needs to grow his hair out more.

That’s what he’s missing this year. It would help him keep his head down.

by seattle_since_81 on Apr 10, 2010 7:45 PM PDT reply actions

MY LORD!!!

What the hell kind of a pass was that?

by zeeehjee on Apr 10, 2010 7:48 PM PDT reply actions

Again

Why isn’t Keller claiming that ball. That cross was onto the top of the 6.

by blakec on Apr 10, 2010 8:02 PM PDT reply actions

"Would have, should have"

They were given the corner and they scored. In the end it doesn’t matter because the result doesn’t change.

by magistermilitum on Apr 10, 2010 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

The main thing is we're really disorganized on corners

That’s got to change or we’re going to see a lot of disappointing results.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions

On the plus side, this is MLS

So it doesn’t really matter. All we have to do is be eighth and have four good games. It worked for RSL last year.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 8:04 PM PDT reply actions

Sigi's substitutions were puzzling to say the least

Montero and Zakuani were the spark in the first half. We definitely felt the lack.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 8:07 PM PDT reply actions

Well it didn’t help that they had to use a sub at half. I have seen it happen 3 times where Seattle forced to use a sub had an some what of an effect later on. Like unable to sub in fuicto for example.

by gstommylee on Apr 10, 2010 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

We were wondering about that actually

Why didn’t they sub Gonzalez at the half instead of after a couple minutes.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

They did sub Gonzalez at half.

by gstommylee on Apr 10, 2010 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

He was? How come it had zero mention about the sub until halftime. I wasn’t watching the game. Either way i stand my case force to use a sub earlier than what the team played doesn’t help at all.

This is the 3rd time that happen and it ended up being a draw.

by gstommylee on Apr 10, 2010 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I was keeping track of it online.

by gstommylee on Apr 10, 2010 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Not really. Gonzalez was feeling sick, but he was hoping that during halftime it would calm down

He went out, the sickness came back and he subbed out. Arlo explained it during the broadcast

by Coug1990 on Apr 10, 2010 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah, it was loud here so I must have missed that.

Still, it was bad that we had to use a sub for that.

by CarlosT on Apr 10, 2010 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed and it did affect the game play from a tactical point of view. I was expecting Fuicto to sub-in in today’s game.

Which i do think Seattle needs practice on in reserve games being sub out early then work on with only 2 subs left from a tactical POV.

by gstommylee on Apr 10, 2010 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea the issue affected both sides. But clearly RSL having to sub earily twice only helped Seattle to for a little while. Seatlte unable to keep ball in the attacking end ended up costing them 3 points.

by gstommylee on Apr 10, 2010 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s what i thought.

by gstommylee on Apr 10, 2010 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

It really unfortunate Seattle let it slip away on two corner kicks… I thought over all both teams played decently well. Or course with a few slip ups here and there. Although we probably should have come away with 3 points I can’t say I’m going to complain with getting only one. Hopefully we can go get a win next week against KC.

On a side note, think I need to watch the KC game to see how good they really played, because I’m sure someone is going to hail them as being the greatest things since sliced bread (like they did with NY this week).

by majora999 on Apr 10, 2010 9:10 PM PDT reply actions

Ironic didn’t questionably substitutions cost us the DC home game win last year?
