Montero not Leaving Yet

SEATTLE - APRIL 03: Mike Petke #12 of the New York Red Bulls battles Fredy Montero #17 of the Seattle Sounders FC on April 3, 2010 at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

You probably have picked up some rumblings that Fredy Montero has drawn interest from CSKA Moskow. The original posting is at Colombia.com. MLS-Rumors has posted a translation. There it mentions

Fred[y]Montero, currently on the squad of Seattle Sounders in MLS, told Radio Caracol he is "expected to" clarify its move to Russian football in the coming hours. The Colombian said CSKA Moscow is the most likely possibility, and also that teams from Holland, Turkey and England were interested in the services of striker.

Knowledge of transfer windows matters though. You'll note that only the USA/Canada and Finland have open windows at this time, and that Russia isn't listed. Russia's closed last Thursday, if you were wondering. The window that determines if a player can move to a new team and league is the one in which the League accepting the player sets, not the departing league.

There are rare exceptions due to injury. But Moskow is not desperate at this time for a forward, they have tons of them.

Sure Montero will likely move, and it will be good for him when he does, but it won't happen now. It will likely happen during other leagues summer window roughly at the same time that Blaise Nkufo and a DP or two join the squad.

UPDATE: Mayers has quotes from Hanauer related to the transfer window - Montano, Pires, Montero and surprises. This is related and a must read for some perspective.

Also, the rumor I saw mentioned Deportivo still having 35% of his contract but my understanding was that the Sounders and MLS have him 100% now.

He's young enough that the sell-on rule would be in effect

Which would mean that they would get a 5% fee for player development, or there could be a sell-on fee as part of the last negotiations.

I see. My point was more that those rumors had bad info in them, making them even more suspect. Anyhow, I don’t really expect us to retain young Mr. Montero’s services through the year. In fact I kind of assumed that was part of the logic behind the Nkufo signing. Hopefully we’ll get another high-quality DP as well.

Yea not many people know how transferring of players works and believe the rumor is true.

by gstommylee on Apr 14, 2010 1:19 PM PDT reply actions

Hard to say. But Seattle selling montero = 600k in allocation money and use it to bring down the 3 DP would have against the cap to 450k + additional 150k to use on let say Kufo.

I read once that the average MLS player is in the league only 3 years

Montero is better than average and will likely move on and up.

In some ways this League is like college basketball or minor league baseball. The players will move on and will not be long with the team

Transfering

Not too clear on how this works (though the wikipedia article helped… thanks). If Fredy transfers, we lose him, but we get a bunch of money, correct? Which we can then use to help get a better player, correct?

Seems kind of like the stock market… we can buy guys low and try to sell them again for more money?

by zeeehjee on Apr 14, 2010 1:29 PM PDT reply actions

Seems like a good deal.

Sad, though. But if we want the league to improve we are probably just going to have to live with watching exciting young players leave for a while.

Talent in soccer is so wide spread and leaves so often

nearly every league has to get used to that.

Only the old G-14 teams really have any long term stability.

Extra Cash

If this system was used well by the MLS it seems as though it could probably help to compensate for teams that can’t sell too many tickets.

My question would be whether or not the MLS has been good at using this rule to its advantage in the past. Are there any examples of MLS clubs bringing in significant cash by transferring or loaning players? I know the Galaxy loaned out Donovan to an English side earlier this year… did this have a significant benefit?

(Sorry for my ignorance. I didn’t pay any attention to the MLS before Seattle got a team, so I’m still learning)

I think it’ll increase the chances that teams will use their DP slot especially that they are able to bring down the amount the DP is against the cap.

Toronto's gain from Edu

wound up with them getting grass installed

Beckham’s loan made them a lot of money and probably led to them using allocation dollars on those 3 young Brazilians.

Loans often don’t involve a cash payout though.

In the case of the DP’s like i said above we can use the allocation money to bring down the amount the DP costs against the cap to 150k per DP and if Seattle uses the 2nd and buys the 3rd. It’ll leave us 2.1m to use for the rest of the team.

I think this is hilarious

Montero in Europe. Perhaps it’ll happen. But I’ve seen nothing to make me believe that Montero will ever be effective at that level. The thing that I think isn’t being talked about here is that (1) he’s never linked well with Fred L. and if that look in the RSL first half between them wasn’t an illusion, they don’t have a lot of love for each other (2) Sounder management may believe that at this point, Montero isn’t a good fit for what this team can deliver.

Montero has plenty of talent and I still believe that Spain would be a decent fit for him. But I’ve felt for a long time that, for whatever reason, we’re just not getting the best out of him here.

CSKA denies talks

MLSsoccer contacted them and they are saying there’s nothing formal going on, and even if there was nothing would happen until after the World Cup.
