Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

GameThread, KC Wizards vs. Seattle Sounders FC, Game 4

Photo

Here's the new match day quick reference card. Notice some players have been moved around and Brad Evans is off for Peter Vagenas.

I know many were hoping for our first rain-free home game, but Mother Nature has not cooperated.

In case you haven't been reading this week, here's our Keys to the Game and KC Scouting Report.

Apparently, Kei Kamara is probable, but I'm guessing he'll play.

Have at it.

Another notable change

Looks like Kamara is playing and he will be switching with Wolff, and playing in the middle instead of on the right.

We've spent an inordinate amount of time on our side of the pitch during the last 3 games.

Would that be a result of our formation, poor passing, or just a part of our strategy?

by magistermilitum on Apr 17, 2010 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it was partially strategy

But it was taken to such an extreme last week that it backfired.

20 minute recap

Think Sounders have been playing their game. Noonan and the rest of the attack have looked good. Ljungberg has been a little disappointing. The defense has been solid.

"Playing their game"

Good way to describe it. We aren’t high octane at all, but you can see them opening up space with their passes.

Better still, KC’s attack hasn’t been that worrisome yet.

And be a good help off the bench. Seems pretty clear he remembers Sigi’s system.

by magistermilitum on Apr 17, 2010 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

First-half thoughts

First 20+ minutes SSFC really controlled the pace. Vagenas looked good, during that time. Noonan looked real good during that time. Sounders could definitely have two goals. The second 20+ minutes were much more even, maybe even edging to KC’s advantage. No really serious challenges, but they were able to get their legs under them.

Vagenas had a couple ugly passes in that time, one of which led to KC’s best chance.

Overall, SSFC has been real tough with Smith. I think 02Coug is right about the refs getting to them. There have been some awful calls, but Zak can’t go touching the ref like that.

Your thoughts?

We don’t really have anyone to target on long balls or corners. Montero and Ljungberg can get pushed out of position by stronger/larger defenders.

That goal changes everything

I would have been the first to really start to question the overall plan here, but winning makes this a defensive effort to relish and allows us to forget about those early missed chances.

Because if it's not Love | Then it's the bomb ... | That will bring us together

by Jeremiah Oshan on Apr 17, 2010 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't really see why the goal changes everything

It was a lucky goal that caught KC off guard. Sure the defense looked good but our passing and creating was very sub par on the day.

by Scrupio on Apr 17, 2010 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe I'm more forgiving

But I thought the big test coming in was how our defense would hold up and I thought for the most part we really neutralized their attack. Our passing looks sloppy, but I don’t see how you can just write off a win like that.

Because if it's not Love | Then it's the bomb ... | That will bring us together

by Jeremiah Oshan on Apr 17, 2010 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Well I just don't think we deserved to win, a draw would have been more reflective of how we played

To play that poorly on the offensive side at home in front of 36k supporters is almost embarrassing. We didn’t possess the ball very well, made errant passes, and couldn’t convert the chances we got until the very end. Starting with Vagenas and Alonso in the midfield was an interesting move by Sigi, too defensive in my mind especially at home. But the defense played very well I must admit, so we can hang on that. Hopefully the lift of winning in the last minute will spur us on and give confidence to the next game.

by Scrupio on Apr 17, 2010 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

I’d still quibble with the idea that we didn’t deserve the win, but I agree our offense definitely needs to improve. I mean, I thought we outplayed them enough to justify feeling good about three points. Was it perfect? No. I thought this was a big improvement over last week in just about every aspect except finishing.

Because if it's not Love | Then it's the bomb ... | That will bring us together

by Jeremiah Oshan on Apr 17, 2010 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

How bad is it that our sub-par offense still appeared to be an improvement?

I felt like we possessed it better this week on the offensive side of things. We did peter out in the 2d half, and we weren’t too creative, but we definitely weren’t as pressed as we were against RSL.

by magistermilitum on Apr 17, 2010 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally agree

And there is obviously still work to do there.

Because if it's not Love | Then it's the bomb ... | That will bring us together

by Jeremiah Oshan on Apr 17, 2010 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Serious game of retribution

Fucito’s been dying for a chance, comes up big. Evans was the goat, and looked strong and had the game-winning throw-in. Keller, while he may or may not have erred on the play that gave the corner last week, was absolutely huge. Now the question becomes, how do you make more room for Fucito?

I really don’t think you take Noonan off, as this was his best game.

Because if it's not Love | Then it's the bomb ... | That will bring us together

by Jeremiah Oshan on Apr 17, 2010 2:01 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah Noonan played well

But it is nice to have Fucito breathing down his neck if he slips or there is an injury. Of course, Fucito looks pretty rosy after that goal.

by magistermilitum on Apr 17, 2010 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Let me expand

In the Non-MLS games, players that do well will get more minutes in the MLS games.

by Coug1990 on Apr 17, 2010 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe they make a nice platoon (to use a borrowed term)

Don’t know how much precedence there is for a move like that, but I for one wouldn’t mind seeing Noonan starting and then bringing Fucito on whenever we need a boost in the final 20-30 mins. Obviously, his extra gear is even more pronounced late in the game.
