Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Never take performance on the road for granted.

I know you guys are used to seeing a free-flowing, attacking team there. But consider a couple of points from someone at the match:

Brad Evans and Osvaldo Alonso were freakin’ animals out there. Perhaps that was less than apparent on TV. Dallas plays essentially with three central midfielders. Alonso and Evans matched them with a fierce determination (with help, of course.)
Sigi Schmid’s tactics worked to perfection

Steve Davis has so much more on the match

He was there and saw a much different game than we did. By that I mean his satisfaction with the Sounders, particularly Evans and Alonso.

Evans and Alonso were both very disruptive

It’s pretty simplistic to think of soccer at the team level in ‘good game’ vs. ‘bad game’ through. The Sounders broke up Dallas’s play but kept giving the ball back through incoherent passing.

Exactly

We scored twice. Montero’s free kick was questionable as to whether he should’ve had it, but he converted. (Incredible!!) Zakuani’s goal had me jumping and screaming with excitement not just from the goal but from everything leading up to it.

From what I see, maybe we’re not so much having issues scoring anymore, but now need to focus on distribution and keeping focus for the full 90. (or full 94 as we’ve seen recently). I don’t think we played poor overall, but we had issues that kept us back from where we could’ve been

Disruptive yes, but we had no flow thru the midfield

I think most comments about the play of our midfield were not directed at the defensive side of the ball. We all agree the Alonso and Evans are a nice road block in front of our back line.

The problem is that they don’t flow forward as easly as they should. We lose most free balls in the air and we were a step slow on all 50/50 balls in the middle of the park.
