Around SBN: Peyton Manning Medically Cleared To Resume NFL Career

Weekly Power Rankings are Out

SBNation's Power Rankings are out and Seattle is not in a good place. I guess not scoring and regular defensive lapses don't impress voters. It isn't prettier when you look at the Sagarin rankings, at least not much prettier. Seattle is 11th by that metric, but if you want a sign of hope you could note that they have the 6th toughest schedule to this point.

Bigger signs of hope are the two 6 footers that were at practice yesterday.

Are the rankings deserved, or are they ignoring that Seattle has essentially been an average team that has been unlucky?

I'd love to say that Seattle has been an unluckly average team

but results are results and we can only really say 1 result was stolen by the ref, i.e. was unlucky. The rest have been squarely on the Sounders’ shoulders, as sad as that is. So, at this point, you’d have to say the ratings reflect reality. I do think (hope) that there’s too much talent on this team to continue the horribleness that has been this start, but that’s why they play the games.

It all depends on how you vote.

Current performance or perceived strength?

On results, we should be near the bottom.

On perception, if we are an average team that’s been unlucky, we should be in the middle.

However, at some point, if we keep on being “unlucky,” we can’t really claim to be an average team without most people laughing at us.

I think we're at the point where it's no longer "too early to worry"

The season is almost a third of the way through. Nkufo being at Starfire on Tuesday and Jaqua on the verge of his return are definitely welcoming signs. But I’m still worried about the rest of the team. After being totally pumped up after our near-Premier League performance against Columbus (sans goals) our 100% asskicking against LA pretty much took away most of the confidence I had. Being last in the west doesn’t help. And no, I don’t care about only being a point out of 4th or whatever…this is not where we should be.

it's too early

but what does worrying do anyway? I guess you can worry whenever you want. The worst thing about this is that we have fallen apart since Dallas, which must have Terry Vaughn smiling somewhere. We’ve played good (pre-LA), and we have a lot to look forward to. Jaqua will be hungry to overcome the embarassment he was last year, and N’Kufo looks like he will be fairly valuable to us. For all we know Blaise and Jaqua will be the shot of energy that puts us over the top. Long summer ahead of us…

I know we still have more than 2/3 of the season in front of us

But the problems we are having isn’t some simple quick fix. There are fundamental issues at hand here. The mental lapses allowing easy goals are the most maddening. If this was something happening once in a while and we had a winning record, I wouldn’t worry. But we’ve got issues. I don’t really understand the argument of “what does worrying do” because it’s a natural feeling to worry when something is not going right. Maybe if I was a casual fan I wouldn’t worry, because I wouldn’t really care. Just like I don’t worry about the M’s, because I don’t care about baseball.

No matter what anybody says, Jaqua wasn’t a disappointment. 9 goals sure was nice. He wasn’t pretty doing it, but he did it. I don’t think people saw past the not-so-pretty play and concluded he sucked.
