Gamethread, Sounders at New York, Match 9
UPDATE: The lineup card is now correct.
Looks like Evans gets the start at the top of Sigi's arrow, Sanna Nyassi gets the nod at right wing and Patrick Ianni starts alongside Peter Vagenas in the central midfield. Miguel Montano's injury looks like it may have been worse than we thought, as he's not even on the 18.
Pat Noonan and Fredy Montero are among the notable bench players.

I'm digging starting Sanna and Zakuani on the wings for the pure speed
But aside from that, uh. Evans? The hell?

A lot of folks here prefer the subject line to be used.
I don’t think its a rule, but it is with some other SBN blogs from Seattle teams. Might want to consider using it to make a good impression.
OK
since I’m a guest I will try it your way.
Mighty Mighty Metro!

Urgh, I hate SBN blogs who do that.
THe blog i follow only encourages it for Images.
Too much bold.

Most would disagree.
Plus it makes it easier to moderate the discussion.
Well, the site I usually follow runs about 4000 comments per game thread, so I guess a different feel here.

The subject line allows the moderators to track flagged comments.
Without it they have to hunt through the blog to find it.
Which one?
It’s got to be either PPP or Jaspers…

No, like I said earlier, 87-90% of the crowd is from Jersey. It’s a long trip either by car or mass transit to get from LI or Westchester to Harrison. It takes me roughly hour to an hour and a half to get there from where I live in Westchester, longer if you live on Long Island.

Evans for Montero...
How’s that “grit” working for us? Montero doesn’t just provide better scoring chances, but he’s also a terrific passer… hope he gets subbed in soon. One or two defensive mistakes and we’ll be behind by a good bit if we can’t score…
Montero hasn't looked so hot on ball lately
So I’d imagine this is Sigi lighting a fire under his tail
I disagree.
Montero has done jack shit the last four games. He hasn’t created anything.

by Graham MacAree on May 15, 2010 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Blind in your hating...
Did you miss the assists he’s had earlier this season? I’d call that creating quite a bit… frankly no one’s been scoring these past few games… it’s obvious that ‘sitting’ Montero hasn’t helped our scoring chances much… I agree, though, that its a tactic of lighting a fire under him… lets see if he can help with the scoring later in the second half… apparently he’s pretty much guaranteed to be subbed in
You people don't seem to understand me.
I don’t hate Montero. I’m disappointed with his current level of performance sure, and I think he’s looking too far ahead without focusing on his current goals. That said, this is a good reminder for him. I fully expect him to be back starting next week.
by magistermilitum on May 15, 2010 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions
If you mean the whole he wants to be in Europe thing
That’s ridiculous. If a player wants to go to a better league, there is no point in said player not playing his best.

A role in which he has stronger playmakers feeding him.
More use of a withdrawn forward to set him up, or just have an attacking midfield.
I think we’ll see a different version of Fredy when Nkufo comes.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on May 15, 2010 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions
I hear ya...
… but there are a lot of fickle Sounders fans who love to hate on Montero. Sure he hasn’t been playing up to par, but so haven’t a lot of other Sounders players this year. Frankly I think his passing has improved, but perhaps to the detriment of him simply winding back and shooting on goal. He certainly proved he can do that from distance last year, and this year with that amazing free kick for score…
Fair enough.
So, who do you think he’ll come in for?
by magistermilitum on May 15, 2010 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions
Still think its a good idea to light a fire under him
I don’t in anyway dislike the guy (I realize how good he has been) but some players react really well to not being played in a game (not sure what it will do for Montero though).

And it's a good thing because they have shown the same damn commerical 3 times in 10 minutes.
I love the new FIFA but c’mon.
I picked up a six-pack of Hornsby's for the game...
…when I saw our lineup, I realized I should have made it a case.
So uh...
Just noticed the lineup card has Hurtado on it twice… I’m assuming one of them should be Marshall?
Yes

And no re: rebounds

I agree
Nyassi is making a fan out of me, I’ve been fairly critical of him but he’s working hard to prove me wrong this game
It's frustrating to watch him do everything right and then make a complete mess of the end product
by Graham MacAree on May 15, 2010 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions
That seems to be quite common
amongst Sounders players. Kinda goes hand in hand with everyone complaining about our lack of finishing.
Yep.
At least we get pretty build up play
by Graham MacAree on May 15, 2010 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think he's done that much.
He gets outskilled sometimes at the end. He’s definitely not Zakuani-level yet

But can’t do that unless they actually doing their jobs properly.

Sturgis really can put a mean cross in
by Brian Floyd on May 15, 2010 6:15 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
YES!
Ljung’s corners are terrible. He lofts them in. Sturgis’ are like a crossing laser. We just need to get to them. That’s where Nkufo comes in

Evans with the assist.
and boy does he deserve it.
what a monster monster game from Evans
proud 4th line advocate
Movement and vision have been wonderful
Passing’s been good. Touch and shooting have been hilariously bad
by Graham MacAree on May 15, 2010 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions
In my opinion
Yes,
Constant effort, and constant pressure, even though he was not able to convert, his effort I think puts in lots of intangibles for him.
proud 4th line advocate
I could go out to the field, run my ass off and be completely useless
Effort doesn’t mean a thing without an end product.
by Graham MacAree on May 15, 2010 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions
So the pressure he applied to NYR defenders, and the amount of plays he prevented via his pressure has absolutely no impact?
What about defenders then? They don’t really contribute towards the “end product”?
proud 4th line advocate
But there.s a difference between applying pressure and "effort"
by Kirsten Schlewitz on May 15, 2010 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions
There is, what I saw today was effort from Evans that translated into offensive pressure, or at least pressure on the defenders.
proud 4th line advocate
Then that is a perfectly acceptible reason to say he's had a good game.
“Effort” just doesn’t tell us anything
by Kirsten Schlewitz on May 15, 2010 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions
I thought it was evident from his play that he wasnt just running laps around uselessly.
Didn’t think I had to be so specific about why I thought evans had a great game.
proud 4th line advocate
It's just been really irritating to constantly hear people hail effort rather than actual contribution.
It’s like getting a trophy just for showing up.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on May 15, 2010 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions
So desribe him in those terms
The ‘he tried really hard’ thing is vacuous at best.

I had forgotten what winning felt like.
Its kind of nice.
I realize this team is better than they have played,
or so we think, but doesn’t this show why the east/west tables are pretty ridiculous?

good conversation with actual soccer-knowledgeable people. I won’t even go near the soundersfc.com or ECS forums. Too many people who have no clue
