The SBNhanced MLS Power Rankings are a collaborative effort by SBN's soccer bloggers to rank the MLS teams each week.

Week 9 rankings.  Updated 5/25/10.

The only debate on the trophy contenders is if anyone belongs up with the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Columbus Crew. The only debate on the playoff contenders is if Toronto FC belongs in as the 8th or if some random team from tier three will appear. There is a small debate as to if the New England Revolution belong with DC United and the Philadelphia Union at the bottom.

Sagarin has Seattle Sounders FC at 9th. The Rave Green are one of four teams to not beat a top 8 side, but they are 6th amongst points won against the top four, with 2.

Playoff chances are at 19.8% and the Sounders are 13th by that measure. Looking deeper, if the Sounders win 9 of their remaining matches they are almost certain to be in the Playoffs.

Nine wins in 20 games?

i can see seattle getting additional 9 wins if they can freaken SCORE more than 1-2 goals a game for 9 out of 20 games.

Agreed. We could have the potential of winning ALL the remaining games if we scored at least once, or dare I say twice. We would have the defensive advantage of not being caught on our heels every time we push our offense up. Hurts to say it, but where is Jacqua when you need him? It would be nice to have a someone with a lil more size than Ljunberg and Montero in front of the net.

any update on Jacqua? I thought he was supposed to be available as a reserve for San Jose, but he wasn’t ready yet. Wouldn’t mind seeing him come in for the Colorado game.

No updates. I’ve checked all the news outlets for info, nothing. Last substantial update is from mid-May via Seattle Times. Be nice to know if the dude is alright and rearing to go. I’ve heard rumbles that issues have risen with the allegations back in Eugene, take that with a grain of salt. Mostly hear-say BS in my opinion.

I actually talked to him while he was at sports authority for the player appearance. He said the recovery was going good and he should be back to full training either this week if not next week. So it should be soon.

D. Clark, could you break down the voting system for the rankings above? Hopefully there aren’t any hanging chads involved :)

by sum anon on May 25, 2010 9:47 PM PDT reply actions

Our votes are simply by Tier

There is no requirement to vote a certain number of teams into a specific tier. The idea is which teams do you expect to win trophies? who makes the playoffs? who is competing for the #3 draft pick? who misses the playoffs and doesn’t get a decent player in the draft?

Each MLS blog on SBnation gets a vote.; Our Fulham Blogger is based out of New England and votes, as do the soccer manager (Steve Davis), and the sbnation.com/soccer editor Richard Farley.

As we add more MLS sides more bloggers will vote.

But I know at least one voter who only thinks two teams are competing for major trophies, and only two teams are competing for the #3 draft pick.

I was the first voter to drop Seattle to the third tier.

Make or break stretch in the schedule

3 of our next 4 matches are against Tier 4 teams. And the fourth, Colorado, is going through offensive struggles like us. 12 points in the next 4 matches is very possable. Although, I’ll be happy if we “only” end up with 10.

I can't argue much about this list.

I’d probably put Toronto up a couple points and pull Houston and Colorado down a point or so. Toronto is on a tear.

Having said that, we just can’t get it done right now, and with Hurtado, Alonso, Jaqua, Evans, and yes, Fucito all injured, we really are screwed. I can’t hold too much hope out for Jaqua coming back any time soon.

We don't vote by straight order

We vote by “Can they win a trophy?” “Will they make the playoffs?” “Are they competing for a draft pick?”

There is no difference between a team ranked 7th and 8th.

Yikes

it’s like a cannon was fired down the middle of the park, and Keller only missed it because he saw it coming from so far away (knock on wood). Hard to win with your best defender, 3 key central mids and 2nd leading scorer on the injury list.
