Sounders Host Boca - The Electric Gamethread
Seriously, you wanted a match card for this one? Keys to the Game? Its a FRIENDLY against a team that didn't know that Sounders play on Field Turf while praising the stadium. It is a friendly against a team that claims all of its stars at World Cup camps, even though some aren't on rosters.
Friendlies are good because they let you see teams you'd never see. In this case it will be very cool for the Rave Green Colombians to see one of the most well known teams on their home continent. Hopefully M&M can score, as it would mean quite a bit for them.
It should be fun to see Boca Juniors, as its a different style of play, a lot more individual flair, rather than tactics. But in the end it isn't the result that matters, but the performance.
Each healthy player should see minutes tonight in the Electric Yellow, likely a half each.
The game today is on 710 ESPN Seattle KIRO AM. Which is great. Its actually a sports station and may have bleed over from the Mariners game, and standard programming. A few new fans are possible.
TV is KONG and FSC (national)
MLS sides are doing well in friendlies this year.
Comment away, a new depth chart is coming later this week.

This has come at a good time
I think having a game that does not count to figure stuff out is exactly what this team needs right now.

Alonso started
He’s hurt again and being subbed now.

It is in his honor
Hurtado and Montero are both Colombian and good friends

Anyone else still think Ljunberg should be taking those free kicks?
by Brian Floyd on May 26, 2010 8:21 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
There is no doubt that it is reputation only that keeps Ljunberg as the free kick taker
Montero is more dangerous on direct shots. Sturgis is better with crosses.
Good.
Aliveness is what I want. Screw talent, intelligence and skill. Aliveness is where it’s at.

I'd say it's a decent start. It does help being endowed with motor function and, you know, pulse.

Sounders's play has looked very energetic tonight.

1st half done... I thought we played extremely well. Only one or two mental lapses that I saw.

I'm not actually good enough to start over anyone on the team*

The great thing about the Sounders' home games
is about 40% of the crowd shots involve someone I know. Can’t say that about Safeco. To me, this means a LOT for the team.

Just really, really good ball control here. It's promising.

Just tap it in
WHY WON’T YOU GO IN YOUR HOME!!! DON’T YOU LIKE YOUR HOME!!?!?!
I agree with that
That was funny how someone could be all by himself and get a hand ball out of it.
He could have humped that ball into the net

Evans got MAD skills
When he shows his scoring skills, we all get mad
He's so good off the ball
I wonder if other teams are getting to the point where they just don’t bother marking him anymore

Is there a warning track near the net?
Or a Shortstop?

Forgive my naivete, but I had heard these guys were able to stand their ground against some of the best in the world?
Granted, this was from an analyst who had an appearance on 710 ESPN…

they used to be but I’m pretty sure they are near the bottom of their league now…. I still wouldn’t call them from a half-rate league though.
I'm kind of pissed the Sounders have saved all of their offense for a match that offers no points.
Yet I’m thoroughly entertained.

The South American leagues are talent funnels to Europe
They’re not much better than MLS. Although they’re much more exciting.

Seems so. At least tonight for a Sounders fan.

Any good team's B team shouldn't be losing 3-0 against Seattle
by Graham MacAree on May 26, 2010 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions
All I'm saying is that the Sounders have been playing like a "B" team as well.
I like to be on the “finally not getting reamed” side of things.

If Boca isn't that good, then what is the general consensus on Celtic FC?
Karma police, arrest this man.
Isn't Celtic like the Boston Bruins of their league?
In terms of thuggishness, I mean?

I'm overstating things
Chelsea and Barcelona are top five teams in the world. Celtic and Boca are… top 40? Maybe? I mean, they’re not bad, but I’d prefer the friendlies being set up to be displays of soccer as art.
by Graham MacAree on May 26, 2010 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions
Boca is currently 55th in international rankings
But we are playing many of their second sqaud guys. Starters missing for world cup duty and rehabs.
God - viewing these easy Sounders breakaways, I can see that.
"I might be a butt hoarder...speed skating butts that is." - wazzu93
Sadly (for me), this is like watching the Patriots take on the WA State Cougars.
Possibly even a local older gals club with the same name…
"I might be a butt hoarder...speed skating butts that is." - wazzu93
I think it was a really hard year to schedule
With the world cup, top tier clubs wouldn’t want to travel until after they get their players back from cup duty. And the Sounders probably wanted games relatively early as they wouldn’t want to load the end of the schedule when they will have the champions league, US Open Cup, and the stretch run of the season.
Manchester City are going to be playing Portland
Now, City aren’t a spectacularly good team, but they’re significantly better than either of the friendlies that have been announced.
by Graham MacAree on May 26, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions
City is probably better today
But, they have nowhere near the long term reputation as either Boca or Celtic.
So it depends on what you are looking for in a friendly.
I'm a Chelsea fan
Who cares about history? :)
by Graham MacAree on May 26, 2010 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions
You must be a very happy fan this year
I love the EPL, but I am not really a fan of any team. Although Chelsea is among my favorites. I guess you could say that I like every team except one. I cannot stand Man U and root for them to lose every game.
Sure
But it’d be nice if we picked friendlies against teams whose ‘B’ teams could give us a competitive game, and whose stars are actually noteworthy.
by Graham MacAree on May 26, 2010 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Let's start gently with a team from Seattle actually winning, then work on momentum.
We began that last season, but seemingly took two steps back… I thought Montero looked like old Yuni at the beginning of this season. No life. Nothing. I’ll take this as momentum, and hope they play up to the level we expect on paper.

My guess...
Is that it was a friendly and they wanted to give him more of a rest anyway. He’ll be ready for Colorado.
Plus…it means a lot more for the younger guys to get a chance to get on the field against Boca than it would for Ljungberg as well.
by SounderEvertonRomaFan on May 26, 2010 10:00 PM PDT reply actions
Montano....
Montano shows more and more promise every game. Also shows how he’s young. But that is alright. His footwork is great…but you can tell he’s still nervous out there from time to time as well. Especially when he gets an opportunity to shoot. But he is getting and creating the chances, so that’s a great start!
by SounderEvertonRomaFan on May 26, 2010 10:01 PM PDT reply actions
We need to send him to finishing school
He needs to work on what ever Zakuani did during the offseason to become a better finisher. What a potential talent though. I think we are going to have a very exciting team in about 3 years when all these young guys mature.
I so don't care this game didn't count
Lots of fun being there. Thought Sounders looked great. If all they get from this game is increased confidence, that would be huge.

I wish we had possesion stats
If felt like we just dominated the ball. We kicked it around at will against their midfield and we were faster on both wings. Their right back must have been so sick of reading Zakauni’s number as he ran away from him.
First time commenting here...
Well, this was the second game I’ve been to, and I think I’m hooked. Never used to like soccer before, but finally getting to go to a couple of games in person has started to change my mind. These guys are fun to watch. Also, I got to interview Keller about a year ago, so it’s cool to get to watch him perform.

Yeah soccer is addicting, especially with the atmosphere that we’re so lucky to have in Seattle. We truely are soccer capital, USA.
