Sounders offer credit for Saturday's game
It's already been reported here, but I thought you might like to see the actual quotes from Adrian Hanauer. Basically, if you're a season-ticket holder and you renew, you'll only have to pay for 17 of 18 games next season.
Here's the team's release:
RENTON, Wash. - The Seattle Sounders FC announced today that a refund for Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Galaxy will be issued to season ticket holders in the form of credit towards 2011 season tickets.
Sounders FC allowed four goals for the first time at home in club history as the Galaxy won 4-0 in front of a franchise record crowd of 36,273 on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field. It was only the second time the club has allowed more than one goal at home in a league match.
"That wasn't Sounders soccer and it was quite frankly embarrassing, humiliating and the fans don't deserve that," said Sounders FC owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer. "The refund will come in the form of a credit against next year's season tickets. We want our fans committed for the long haul and we think this is the right thing to do for our fans."
"As the owners of the club we reserve the right to do whatever we think we need to do to treat our fans the way they've treated us."
In its inaugural season, Sounders FC capped season tickets at 22,000 and averaged 30,943 fans per match, establishing a new MLS record for highest fan average per match. This season 32,000 Sounders FC season tickets were sold at a 96 percent renewal rate with a league-high average attendance of 36,144 over five games.
"I think it is a fair tribute to our fans," said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid in reaction to the decision. "I said to the team today that the fans support throughout the game and the way they remained and they supported us after the game was phenomenal."
"I think the organization has made all the right marketing decisions and all the right moves and they feel that this is what is needed to show our fans we are appreciative of what they do week in and week out."

I think the refund...
Is stupid. Well actually I don’t care, but instead of a refund they should have one less friendly next year and give the boys a rest.

Just a question or two
Are they going to take the money to pay for this from the players? Seems if your team doesn’t show up to play the blame falls on the coaching staff and the players, so while this is a great PR move, does it address why the team lost 4-0?
I believe that the Sounders have a great fan base and a lot of them are dedicated soccer fans, but would any of them expect this move?
I think the expectations of a incredible run like last year, was a bit naive for the Sounders front office and fans. There is talent on this team, but you got a great boost by the fact nobody knew what to expect when facing you. You had the element of surprise on most teams, this year teams know how to play against you and so far the tactics and players haven’t done a masterful job of adjusting.
Now that being said you can look at the 2008 season of a player like Javier Morales who went from being a MVP candidate to in 2009 barely being a blip on anyones radar, teams knew what to expect from him and he failed to adjust his play or tactics. Early in 2010 he has been more successful than in all of 2009 because he has changed up how he plays. I think a number of players on the Sounders roster need to go back and study tape of themselves from last year and see how they can change up their game to regain the edge.
I don't think Adrian is that much of a prick
Because docking the players would be an extremely prickish move. This is Adrian taking money out of his pocket (and those of Joe Roth, Vulcuan, and Drew Carey). He felt responsible for putting out a substandard product and felt that the fans deserved better.
I think it’s safe to say that nobody expected this move.
We lost the element of surprise four or five games in last year and had to make adjustments. Our current woes are due to the fact that we’re currently unable to finish and suddenly extremely Keystone Kops in our own penalty area. Add to that some significant injury woes, and here we are. We’re definitely not being out played in the middle of the park and we’re not being bamboozled by tactical innovations that we’re not ready for. Our two previous losses came from a combination of bad defensive mistakes and bad finishing. If you need to watch tape of yourself to discover that you shouldn’t give the ball up at the top of the penalty area or shoot straight at the keeper, then you’re probably useless anyway.
Wow
very surprising in this day and age. I think this is pretty cool.
