Sounders Only MLS Side Guaranteed to Not Host Third Round US Open Cup

After yesterday's First Round 2010 US Open Cup matches the potential hosts for Round Three have been revealed. It would seem that many teams have learned from DC United and are pursuing efforts to host as many matches as possible in this tourney. Since there is a bidding process in this tourney one can get an image of how important a team takes the tournament based on how aggressively they bid to host.

In the Sounders case they were out-bid by both the Kitsap Pumas and the Portland Timbers. So no matter who wins that match, Sounders fans will be traveling. The only question is will they be traveling across the Sound to face a bunch of former Sounders (Fishbaugher, Cascio, Besagna and trialists Perdido and Wallace) or will we had south to visit our city's favorite little brother?

Kitsap hosts Portland for the Second Round on June 22nd, which is a Tuesday, but it is live and relatively local soccer.

Disappointed that Seattle won't be hosting the Third Round, though they didn't last year when they won it all?

They must not have put in much of a bid if they were beaten by the Pumas

I could see Portland putting in a large bid, but not the Pumas. I don’t think the Sounders respect those two sides or don’t care about defending their title.

Away v the Pumas shouldn't be a terribly tough match

and Sounders fans weren’t going to pack even Starfire for that match.

Portland though can make huge money on that match. Kitsap will gain a ton of publicity to try and sell tickets to other matches.

The Pumas will not be a tough match and the Sounders are not worried about that at all.

Playing Portland in Portland is always a tough match. If the Sounder really wanted to guarantee going to the next round, they would have done everything to outbid the Timbers.

Weird

DC’s opinion must differ than the guy who came over here last week or so saying the USOC wasn’t a real tournament and it didn’t matter. Apparently their front office takes it pretty seriously.

Don't get me wrong

I trumpeted the Sounders USOC title as loudly as anyone, but it is hard to take a tournament seriously that sends its defending champ on the road to a lower-division opponent simply for a larger cash payment. Real tournaments have draws.

Not as part of a deal with the USOC

If the local team can convince them to pick it up, like Portland did last year as part of the USL coverage that FSC does, then it happens. But several of the games weren’t on the air last year and I’m not aware that any have made it this year.

FSC does hold the contract for the Final

But at this time the USSF is asking for too much money for it to make sense to broadcast. Teams that average hundreds of fans facing off in a high school football stadium aren’t going to get TV ratings, but the Federation does need to get matches on the air, even if its just a “Game of the Round” while allowing local teams to decide how to get their matches on the air regionally.

FA Cup

I don’t know how home teams are decided for the FA Cup, but this year Man City, Burnley, B’ham City, Wolverhampton, and Liverpool all went on the road against non-Premiership sides. Two teams earned replays at home (after road draws): B’ham City, Liverpool. Two teams were on the road against Premiership teams: Arsenal, Hull City.

Granted the structure is a little different since all 20 teams enter in the Third Round Proper and there’s no play-in like the MLS.
