Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

That from the TNT blog as linked above.

Conspiracy theorists already thinking that the Ljungberg ankle injury may be to protect his health while deal finalized.

I dream its a Center Mid, or even Holding Mid.

A reminder on how much the team could make from a transfer out

This from the announcement back in April concerning HomeGrown Players

Generation adidas players & non home grown players acquired in the SuperDraft:

• 1 Year of service: 1/3 to Club and 2/3 to League

• 2 Years: 1/2 to Club and 1/2 to League

• 3+ Years: 2/3 to Club and 1/3 to League

All other players:

• Club receives 2/3 of the transfer fee revenue and the League receives 1/3

The maximum amount of a given transfer fee’s revenue that may be used by a club as allocation money has increased from $500,000 to $650,000. Allocation money may be used to reduce the portion of a player’s compensation that counts against a club’s salary budget in connection with signing players new to MLS, or re-signing existing MLS players to a new contract.

Allocation money could be used to buy down the cap hit of any player now, including DPs.

That injury does sound awfully suspicious

Ljungberg isn’t on any injury lists, he’s ‘day-to-day’ and it just recently cropped up right before the window. Hmmmm… You’d have to think with Evans and Alonso out, any deal will be for a midfielder.

by Nevtelen on Jul 10, 2010 6:57 PM PDT reply actions

At first glance I didn't think much about that angle, but the TNT blog did state

Q: Might the transfer window swing both ways? Could it be that an existing player will leave?

A: It could.

I could see Ljungberg being held out to keep him from being injured as a deal is already in place. Although, this could be just a conspiracy theory all in our heads. At least we do not have long to wonder, as the 15th is only 5 days away.

Except that the MLS transfer window only effects players coming IN

Not OUT.

And he was added to the injury report, but after the injury report was published by the league for the week (due to the game being on a Sunday).

He’s Freddie Ljungberg. He has a long injury history. Him being injured should not necessarily raise eyebrows.

He was at practice

I have a different conspiracy.

Sigi: Freddie you aren’t starting this week.
Freddie: What?!? You aren’t starting me?
Sigi: We think we have a better chance with someone else
Freddie: That’s BS I need to play. I need my next contract.
Sigi: We’ll say you took a minor injury and play you at DC?
Freddie: Fine.

I just made that all up, but it would mimic the mysterious injuries of GBS over the last three seasons.

There's an absurd idea going around right now

that Ljungberg is going to get cut by Seattle so that Red Bull can sign him.

Laughable on many levels

-no allocation dollars gained
-Freddie hates big cities
-why cut a player that could be TRADED

Ratchet it down a few notches Sounders fans. Idiots don’t run the club.

SBI speculated on twitter that he could see Ljungberg go to NYRB. Though he didn’t say we would cut him (that would be silly). Freddie does like Backe.

by PeterJH on Jul 10, 2010 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

even if theres a trade

how much do we expect to get from NY allocation wise. I think not a whole lot compared to how much seattle would get by selling him.

by gstommylee on Jul 10, 2010 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

He actually said "cut losses"

which could be taken as cutting the player, or trading and understanding that they would get belowm market value.

That one tweet has spurred rampant speculation and panic, and it was really just a thought Ives tossed out as interesting. People are acting like it has nearly happened.

you are correct Dave...

also, if you look at the bottom, Ives is replying to another tweet where someone else suggested it could be Freddy. It wasn’t even Ives originally throwing out the idea.

While I could see SSFC making a deal for Ljungberg...

…it would be far from letting him go for below-market value, just to “cut our losses.” What “losses?” Although some of us have been disappointed by FL’s results this season, he’s still one of our better players and an asset to the club. (The only reason for selling him would be if we could use the cap space and DP slot to bring in one or more new players who would be more of an asset.) To use an analogy from another sport, it’s not like he’s a .195-hitting outfielder who’s lost his power and has a substance-abuse issue — there’s no “loss” to cut here.

If you read this...

It’s possible that the player is Ljungberg.

by majora999 on Jul 10, 2010 10:11 PM PDT reply actions

i doubt it

for the fact seattle wouldn’t get 600k in allocation that they would get if they sell him. If he was going to NY why would they wait?

by gstommylee on Jul 10, 2010 10:30 PM PDT reply actions

From reading SBI over the last year, he really doesn't like the Sounders or Freddie

Every post he writes about the Sounders is “I am completely unbiased, BUT the Sounders are lying or Freddie dove, etc.”

He always uses the BUT when discussing the Sounders. Freddie has not had as good of a year as last year, but I do not think any of the regulars have had as good a year as last year. You are right Dave, the Sounders are not stupid and will not just release him. His contract is guaranteed, so there is no cutting losses. Besides, Freddie is not the Sounders problem,

by Coug1990 on Jul 10, 2010 11:24 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, the 'unbiased' schtick from Ives is pretty hilarious

Then again, “fair and balanced” might be right with his new gig at Fox

by brokejumper on Jul 11, 2010 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I still read Ives at times, but when someone continually says he is unbiased, it means that they are usually more biased

Otherwise, you would never have to use that qualifier. I still remember him calling Freddie and the Sounders liars when Freddie got knocked down in a game earlier in the year. He said that there was no contact and Freddie dove, never mind Freddie going to the doctors for an MRI. Freddie going to the doctor was pointed out to Ives and he called the Sounders liars.

I remember a match between NYRB and the Sounders in which Ives lived blogged the game. If you read what he wrote blogging the game, 75% of his comments were about the Sounders on the attack. The Sounders won the match, yet his post game wrap up said it was a completely even game.

BUT, I am sure he is 100% unbiased.

by Coug1990 on Jul 11, 2010 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Ives, but you definitely have to take him with a grain of salt

He presents a lot of information and in most cases his coverage is fair. But it seems like he holds grudges sometimes. The whole Freddy thing case in point. Or today, his commentary went on and on about how horrible the dutch were, but not one mention of Iniesta’s atrocious dive. Basically, if he predicts a win for someone, that’s who he’ll favor plain and simple. Does it mean he isn’t great for soccer reporting in America? Nope.

one thing

if its someone within the league why would it be 50/50. To me its someone that is outside the league that is currently under contract.
