We’ve received some new information suggesting Uruguay international Alvaro Fernandez is actually headed to Seattle Sounders FC. Several reports out of Uruguay are suggesting the 24 year old midfielder is currently close to sealing a deal with the club. Fernandez has 10 caps for the Uruguay national team, including appearances at this summers World Cup, where Uruguay finished 4th

Huge for you guys if this is completed
He’s looked great and is young where you can build around him for years.
Also, I posted the same shot, you can delete if you want.

I take it this is a good thing?
Somewhat unimpressive resume… honestly never heard of this guy outside of the World Cup.

Alvaro Fernandez
Was he the one that usually came in sometime around the 60th min for them? I unfortunately deleted my WC games from the DVR or I would do a write-up on him
Looks like his most extensive game time came in the 1st half against Ghana
He generally came on between the 75-80th min as a late game sub but started against Ghana though was ineffective. I’ll see if I can get time to write up a report on him based on that game later today or tomorrow.
Brokejumper
That would be great. Do it in a FanPost.
Pay some attention to if when he came in it was to provide more defense, or offense, etc.
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
judging by what I've seen him rated
He is an offense guy.
From a fan rating… so take with grain of salt.

This looks like somebody read his stats off FIFA10
by chrisperry1983 on Jul 21, 2010 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions
From the looks of it, FIFA 10 was the basis for the style of the stats
but, I think they were doing their own rankings.
The site is called "PES Stats Database"
Which means they’re stats for the Pro Evolution Soccer video game series (main competitor for FIFA).
Of course, they’re done by fans, so they’re always going to be very positively skewed.

will post actual quote when i get home, but shrt version is not a denial though not a confirmation either

Looks like
Seattle is waiting until the deal is finalized before making an announcement.
Looks promising to me
This could be a good signing to shore up our midfield especially in the CAM on the right flank (now that Ljundberg appears to be on the way out). He also doesn’t look like a DP so that 2nd DP slot is still open. However, I’m probably wrong, but I think the Sounders would need to clear a foreign player spot for him. I wish I could remember more of his play from the WC. I was very impressed with the midfield play of the Uruguayan team overall.
So what position do you think he might fill in the near term? In the near term we desperately need to shore up the center with a CAM. It looks like he can fill that role. I wish we could find out more about his ability to distribute the ball and create plays.
I don’t know for next year. When people start getting healthy we’re going to have some serious competition in the midfield with Nyassi, Montano, Evans and Seamon all fighting for starting spots at either Right Wing or CAM. That’s not even counting Noonan, Sturgis, Ljundberg, Levesque and Vagenas who have all played in the CAM or Wings, but are probably better suited to other spots.
Seattle
has 1 international spot open. Hurtado is IRed so he doesn’t count.
Ljungberg is most likely on his way out so he would take Ljungberg’s international spot if he is announced after Ljungberg leaves.
International Spot
Thanks. So, the Sounders won’t have to clear an international spot until the end of the year even if Ljungberg stays. However, if they bring in a 2nd international DP to replace Ljungberg then they’ll need to clear an international spot next year.

Not sure this is right
On their roster on the official site, fucito and estrada are listed as being on IR, but Hurtado is simply listed as International. I wonder if the eight international slots also counts players on IR.

At least what i understand
that any one on IR doesn’t count against the roster limit and if person was international player doesn’t count against the limit of 8 international players.
plus
the status on that on the roster listed on the site was never really accurate.
I've officially confirmed that JKH does NOT count against roster
Everyone else on the sounders roster appears to be properly designated, though.

More suited to other positions??
Noonan, Vagenas are more suited to the LRO position…. Left Right Out!!!.
Add talent and let the depth chart sort itself out
"Kia Kaha" -be strong
"shore up our midfield especially in the CAM on the right flank"
Hey Dizzo!!
What do you call a CAM on the right flank??? a wide midfielder,
sorry couldn’t resist
"Kia Kaha" -be strong
Nice recovery, Dizzo!
Can anyone translate blakec’s stats into a summary in plain English?

Nacional fan here
We signed this guy like 2 years ago, when he was unknow to the average uruguayan soccer fan. He made an impression right away. He started in pre-season games and made some big plays, specially against Peñarol, which is Nacional’s most hated rival. So he became a fan favorite. By the middle of the season he was a regular in Uruguay’s national team in the qualifiers. Nacional won the championship and made the semifinals in the Libertadores. He made a lot of goals in both tournaments, some of them in the uruguayan finals and CL playoffs. Then he had a stint in Portugal but it didn’t work out so went to U de Chile, where he made the semis in the CL again. He was considered a bit of a dissapointment because he had the biggest contract of the league, and wasn’t a regular starter, but still did pretty well.
He can get to the box and make plays. Even though he doesn’t look like a soccer player at all, he plays hard, he’s fast, has good instincts offensively, and excels at the fast break. Pretty good timing and positioning in defense. Great work ethic.
