Match Day Quick Reference Card, Sounders vs. FC Dallas

Seattle Sounders vs. FC Dallas

We're playing it somewhat conservative and going with just two changes; Nate Jaqua taking over for Pat Noonan and Michael Seamon taking over for Peter Vagenas in the midfield.

On Dallas' side, they've changed it up since the last time these two teams met. Kevin Hartman has taken over in goal and Jeff Cunningham appears to be on the bench. In Cunningham's place as the lone striker is Atiba Harris.

Here's the printable version:  match 16 reference card (print)

In a lineup like this with only one pure holding midfielder, is Ianni or Vagenas the preferred starter?

My guess would be that Vagenas starts if for no other reason than that he didn’t play midweek, but I’d like to hear other people’s views on which of the two is the better option

Primary purpose of holding mid is defense

Ianni is much stronger at that than Vagenas. Is also bet that Pat’s legs are still fresh.

How can anyone think of putting Vagenas in?

Vagenas is nothing but a stop-gap. If there is nothing else, or if we have all of our guns on the field, then mabye he is used. He slows everything down. I don’t think he is a bad guy, but man does he not fit an attacking style of team. We are like a team that doesn’t know what it wants to be. First part of the season, we are attacking with the take it to you ball control. We can’t put it in the net and then we turn into slow down, lob it down field, no attack, confusion. Young energized players, with Jaqua’s returning energy and no Vagenas and Noonan. Ahhh. Now we can watch the team play.

I love those two switches

I am a fan of Pete, but his form as of late has not been good. Noonan never really won me over. I’m ecstatic to see Seamon/Jaqua in.

Awesome.

This is a great lineup. Lot’s of attack, Jaqua and Montero up front play well together and it’s been too long since we’ve seen it. I can’t wait.

Ljungberg is out with minor ankle tweak

Which gives Sigi the opportunity to start Montano or Nyassi at Right Wing. Or he could go Vagenas at CM and Seamon on right.

I’m hoping for Montano which would put a lot of pressure wide.

I was also thinking...

Montano. Curious to see how many minutes he can do. He looked out of gas at the end of the USOC. Do you think we’ll see Sturgis play at all? I personally am not the biggest fan of Ianni as a holding mid, but I don’t know that Sturgis is much better. The thing is I don’t really see Ianni contributing much to the offense other than corner kicks (when is he going to bury one of those headers anyways?).

Ianni's defense is just so much better and the team needs the help there

I don’t expect that Jeremiah’s dream lineup with Riley at CDM, Ianni at CB, Scott at RB and Montano at RW appears, but that would be an idea worth exploring.

You also bring up an issue in that if Ljungberg, Vagenas and Sturgis aren’t on the pitch who takes the corners?

Ianni

would be my guess. As much as I like Sturgis, I hate to agree with you on his defensive skills. I think he’s so valuable in a midfield role, but Ianni is clearly superior in defense. Not to say Sturgis isn’t good, but we need more help than that at this point.
