You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a pundit for Toronto FC or the Montreal Impact, but on a national level the Whitecaps and their lower-division western rivals go almost entirely neglected. So I take perverse joy in writing the stories nobody else is writing about the teams nobody east of Winnipeg cares about.
Over the coming weeks, that's exactly what I'm going to do. There'll be plenty of Whitecaps content, of course: news, game notes, opinion pieces, the treacly editorial that is the province of the sports blogger. The Canadian national team and their two friendlies at the beginning of September will certainly not go neglected. But you'll also read about FC Edmonton's latest foibles, or maybe big news out of Abbotsford's PDL team. If you want yet another reaction to Chad Barrett's inaccuracy or Stefan Frei's brilliance, you're in the wrong place, but if your idea of a soccer-loving Canada stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic then welcome aboard.
Eighty Six Forever joins SBN Covering Whitecaps and Western Canada
Yeah, I've been busy reaching out to other bloggers lately and trying to grow our greater soccer community. One of our Cascadian Brethern joins today.
Go say hello.

As somebody who is a a MLS Sounder fan I was wondering if an old hardcore fan can straigthen something out for me.
I know that we hate Portland with all our heart (and boy do I ever!) but I am wondering what our relationship is supposed to be with Vancouver? Everything I have seen points to them as our rival in terms of success on the pitch but generally there isn’t that much actual animosity between the two supporters groups like there is between us and the Timbers.
Is this a correct assumption? And if so who is their true rival and what’s their opinion of PDX in this who Cascadia Cup?
I *think* the gist of the story is:
Seattle/Portland are rivals
Seattle/Vancouver are rivals
Vancouver/Portland are rivals
Seattle/Vancouver bro up and hate Portland together
Portland hates everybody and gets no bro-ups
We don’t like Vancouver, Vancouver doesn’t like us, but we unite in hating Portland. I do not have any other information though as far as who their true rivalry is. I think it’s a regional thing with us and Portland, but then their main rivals are Montreal, being Canadian and in the same league and all.

I would say that's right.
I also think that Portland’s utter lack of success over the years coupled with their super-annoying “Soccer City USA” attitude have something to do with it. The Whitecaps and Sounders have actually won some things over the last 35 or so years, and act like it. The Timbers and their fans have won nothing, yet act like they’re God’s favorite side.

A fanbase...
that believes itself to be entitled to respect based on enthusiasm when their team hasn’t won anything of note? Why the mangy curs! I could never be part of any fanbase like that!
To be fair, the Timbers won the regular season championship last year! Although they lost in the playoffs to (smiles) uuuussss!
Also, they won both Cascadia Cups since Seattle moved to MLS, which I have unilaterally and unequivocally decided don’t count as real Cascadia Cups since Portland won them Seattle wasn’t involved.

I don't like Vancouver
But I hate Portland. Vancouver fans I’ve encountered are pretty cool. Sure, there’s plenty of stick back and forth, but it tends to be good-natured. Read the Portland boards and see what nasty is. And I’m sure they revel in that. It’s why I don’t go to sporting events in Oregon (Portland and Eugene, specifically) anymore.
I'm guessing ECS boards are similar as far as nastiness
I think it’s just stoking the rivalry. I really doubt any of those guys actually hate each other. Just like ACES. The founder himself stated in a thread I saw before their board went down was that he started it to stoke the rivalry and nothing more.

Not really...
I’ve been on the ECS boards since the USL days and sure, it’s full of venom, but it seems that it’s just a bit nastier on the P*rtland boards. Timbers fans gets painted with a broad brush, but over at SCUSA, they will identify some Sounders supporters by name. Not real cool.
I thought ACES got its start in Columbus, when they got hurt feelings about Sigi joining Seattle. P*ortland just jumped on because it’s anti-Seattle.
I'd heard a few rumors about ACES and who started it
but I’m fairly certain the guy that did is from Portland. Could be wrong though

The way I used to see it and probably will see it again
Was that Vancouver were worthy rivals: good honorable folk who, as it happened, I wanted the Sounders to crush in every meeting. I think the Whitecaps viewed things the same way, except that they thought of us as honourable.
Portland, on the other hand, were a bunch of lowlife thugs who consciously based their supporter ethic on Millwall, for frak’s sake. I never got the feeling that it was about the soccer for them, it was about getting to hate on Seattle. Also, they have pulled some ridiculously stupid stunts in the past. When the Sounders were leaving USL, the Timbers supporters bought a coffin and painted a “goodbye and good riddance” type message on it. In Timbers colors! Yeah, that’s the way to stick it to us, show us a big green and yellow coffin.
No one ever accused Portland of being intelligent
In the last several decades, the best things about Portland are Paul Allen, Brandon Roy, Kasey Keller and Nate McMillan. What do they all have in common?

Portland is Seattle's Mini-Me
That thought occurred to me when I saw the Dr. Evil “World Domination Starts Here” banner unfurled in the Brougham End at the Metapan match.
