Gamethread: Sounders at Chivas USA

We got the Sounders XI right.

And it comes down to the actual game on the pitch.

Scouting Report
Keys to Game
Quick Reference Card

8 PM kick down at the Home Depot Center

Line-ups shortly

Pregame will feature a little Jeff Parke talking about Alvaro Fernandez with Arlo White.

Houston Dynamo's loss helps Seattle. Real Salt Lake v Columbus Crew doesn't matter. We need to root for a draw or Kansas City win over the San Jose Earthquakes. Los Angeles Galaxy win over New York Red Bulls doesn't matter to us.

FC Dallas over DC United likely means that we no longer care about their results either. Yes, I have added them to tier one, and after this weekend so will many more.

THIS IS YOUR GAMETHREAD - you will hear us

Tonight's beer pairing is: Beltian White from Harvest Moon Brewing Company of Belt Montana. It is a wheat beer with coriander and orange peel.

Good choice of beers

I’m rockin’ the Weinhards tonight – a good, solid lager to see me through the game.

My choice for tonight is Bridgeport's Hop Czar

Of course, I’m visiting a buddy who has 50 or more varieties of beer in his beer fridge, so we may stray from our set course.

I'm going to start a tradition of buying a 4-pack of 120 min IPA

each season.

I will only open a bottle for Sounders making a final in any trophy.

My beer choice tonight is Racer 5 IPA

One of my new favorites.

Loving the love for hops.

Racer5 is solid. My usual choice at my local pub.

Dogfish head is good as well. I agree about the 120, but 90 isn’t bad either.

Have you had the Widmer clone? It’s pretty decent.

by magistermilitum on Aug 14, 2010 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Widmer clone? I'm not familiar with it..

Yeah it was either the Racer 5 or Hop Stoopid. Decided to save that one for another day though.

When we made beer for my birthday

We tried our best to mimic the Dogfishhead 90

We called it “our halves are 45 minutes”

Kirsten and Graham still have bottles of it.

Yeah, I caught about half the game

It’s not that Houston can’t put it in the net (2-2 vs RBNY), they just can’t do it enough to win. It’s really odd. I think Ching could do more, but just isn’t getting any reasonable service from the midfield. He looked better up front in the All-Star game when he could get a bit of service.

I haven't been paying close attention

I just switched over from RSL and have mostly been watching the pregame.

Oh well. Good luck to KC. Come on Kamara!

It’s odd, you’d think KC would do okay on a pitch that similarly sized to theirs. San Jose is just feeling that wall against their backs, maybe. They’re new players looks good.

Quakes have plans to add a DP

and theirs will need to be a name as well, because they need a stadium sponsor so they can break ground

Their GM said today that they are continuing to hunt

And their ownership group isn’t poor, they just aren’t making money.

That shifts dramatically when they own and operate their own stadium.

by Dave Clark on Aug 14, 2010 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

mmm Trophies.

CONCACAF doesn’t seem to be in the cards this year (with as crowded a schedule as we have), but it’s great the team seems to make it a priority. Do you think this could become Friendly C? Or is that part of your hope with your #TrophiesNotFriendlies campaign?

Dave, do you know how the gate revenue is split between MLS and the Clubs for participation in USO and CONCACAF events?

by magistermilitum on Aug 14, 2010 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Well can't win the CCL this year anyway

We’re trying to win it in 2011, this year are prelims and group stage

And Sounders will have that busy schedule every year I hope. My standards are simple – MLS Playoffs, US OC Semis and CCL Group stage every year.

Friendly C will be a friendly. That is confirmed. But things will be different this year.

I’ll see if I can get an aswer on gate revenue split for non-MLS matches

I think playoffs and USOC semis are pretty acheiveable

Come on boys

we need to keep some posession going.

Bah so close

Karma police, arrest this man.

by wyte_lightning on Aug 14, 2010 9:39 PM PDT reply actions

Oh crap. Again?

I hate Sounders rolling on teh ground in pain.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:41 PM PDT reply actions

But Ozzie didn't get carded for that tactical foul

either, which a lot of refs in this league would have given.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:43 PM PDT reply actions

This making me nervous

Chivas is holding possession way too much in the wrong end of the field.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:45 PM PDT reply actions

see I hate

this thing with Sigi, it is 0 – 0 and he has two subs left with just over 10 left in regulation.

t least he should have brought someone else in a few min ago

Played the wing in October last year

but it looks like ’Sache

We just don't have it

in the final 3rd this game. It happens.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:50 PM PDT reply actions

its also Chivas getting back to what

they were good at last year, which was some crushing defense

by fcjake on Aug 14, 2010 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Sort of true, but

with such a different lineup and new coach, I’m not sure you can say they’re ‘getting back to it’

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

If by spectacular,

you mean crappy, then yes. We’ll take it.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:50 PM PDT reply actions

Honestly, Montero hasn't been himself since the half.

How many times has he been involved in something dangerous?

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:51 PM PDT reply actions

Come on Arlo,

it’d be wonderful for the ball boy to get on the score sheet here, as long as it goes past Thornton.

He's not going to get it

Are you joking? Come on, listen to Salazar. He gives out cards like candy.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 9:57 PM PDT reply actions

In retrospect

that was possibly a bad decision to listen to Salazar.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

AND A RED TO GONZALEZ?!?!?!???!

WHAT THE FUCK

Karma police, arrest this man.

by wyte_lightning on Aug 14, 2010 9:58 PM PDT reply actions

What the bloody

hell did Leo do to deserve that? complete and utter bull crap.

by gstommylee on Aug 14, 2010 10:00 PM PDT reply actions

This is deserving of a protest

If for no other reason than to make sure the league evaluates this ref.

by surfmonkey89 on Aug 14, 2010 10:00 PM PDT reply actions

I don't

think a protest is really going to do anything about it imo.

by gstommylee on Aug 14, 2010 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I vote

the ref totally lost control of the game by now booking earlier

by gstommylee on Aug 14, 2010 10:00 PM PDT reply actions

what an awful referee

from the 10 minutes allowed for thornton to fix his contacts, to the poor series of calls/no calls in the scrum

He lost the game early

The ending was a direct result of what he did/didn’t do the rest of the game.

by Brian Floyd on Aug 14, 2010 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

To be fair

I think Prus is a good ref. But he did have a bad day. He lost control of that scrum and just didn’t know what to do.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

He's done a good job in games like

the USOC final last season. I remember him because he’s one of the better MLS refs and usually his games are pretty well called. Wasn’t necessarily true tonight, but I’d say it is more often than not.

by Nevtelen on Aug 14, 2010 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Bad day is an understatement.

Cards should have been brought out a lot earlier.

Karma police, arrest this man.

by wyte_lightning on Aug 14, 2010 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed

I was wondering where the cards were early in the game.

Well note to self to stay off the soundersfc.com forums.

by gstommylee on Aug 14, 2010 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

i have similar troubles putting in contacts without a mirror

but holy crap, you should get less than a minute in the middle of a game to put it back in, or put the backup in, or just play with one eye until half time.

by Will Kier on Aug 14, 2010 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Did

Leo retaliate after being shoved down like that? That’s the only way i can see him getting sent off.

by gstommylee on Aug 14, 2010 10:03 PM PDT reply actions

well that sucked

at least we did not lose and are still on track with Colorado

by fcjake on Aug 14, 2010 10:03 PM PDT reply actions

Yes

seattle would have moved up to 4th.

by gstommylee on Aug 14, 2010 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

No, we are in 4th, aren't we?

Maybe I’m on crack, but I thought we’re on 29 pts and Co is in 5th after today with 28. I could be wrong, though. It does happen.

Review

Can they reverse a red card in MLS? I think the ref just issued a second red to “diffuse the situation”.

by rabadash on Aug 14, 2010 10:09 PM PDT reply actions

Hard to say

i never seen USSF actually toss a red before.

by gstommylee on Aug 14, 2010 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

my quick

review excluding the officially.

I thought Seattle played way too fancy at times and gave up the ball. More passing would have made a slight difference imo.
