Toronto FC leads 1-nil

Getting home points against a Mexican team is VITAL.

Now 2-0

You can watch all of these games for free on the CONCACAF website. Good quality too.

I'll be honest I'm rooting for all MLS teams

as well as PRI in this tournament.

I want the Carib winner to get a Group Stage slot (they deserve it more than any non-Mex/CR team)

And, of course I want MLS to do well, until they face the Sounders

Agreed completely.

All for MLS…until they play Seattle.

I still cant understand why more fans don’t attend CCL matches. This is great.

Especially for the games against Mexican sides

I can sort of understand being somewhat apathetic about a team from T&T or one of the other smaller countries, but if you’re willing to watch an MLS team play an MLS team, it would stand to reason that the quality of an MLS team against a Mexican team should be high enough for you.

BTW, are only some matches on here?

I don’t get FSC – can I get those games on here? Anyone know? It looks like the Marathon game is listed at least.

It looks like half or so are offered

Wow - the Azul player choke holds De Ro

and he and De Ro both get a yellow? What an idiotic call.

by Nevtelen on Aug 17, 2010 6:57 PM PDT reply actions

DeRo followed one player off the field as he collected the ball

It’s not unreasonable to consider him an instigator there. For my taste, the ref let too much non-soccer pushing and shoving go before that incident.

Maybe

but grabbing the throat should be a straight red, period, IMO.

Artificial pitch

looks nice, pretty high quality for sure.

by MMAWrestling on Aug 17, 2010 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Zoomed in views...

Would put it on equal ground to a field turf a high school team would have up here. But for what I expected from a Central American team, you cannot complain. This is actually their first game on the turf, as it was just laid down last week I believe. It does appear that it was recently used for a football game though.

by MMAWrestling on Aug 17, 2010 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

According to wikipedia...

…Monterrey doesn’t own Estadio Tecnologico. They rent it from Monterrey Institute of Technology, which apparently is something of a dynasty in Mexican collegiate gridiron football.

When MLS teams have deals like this (renting space, faded gridiron lines on the field, artificial turf), they are derided as second-rate. Interesting to see that that is the situation for a big club in Mexico.

by ubelmann on Aug 17, 2010 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Which is why they insist on calling it ‘football’ instead of ‘soccer’ as is our custom in these parts…

by jamesington on Aug 17, 2010 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Then why not just call it ‘soccer?’ The FC at the end of the Sounder’s name is my least favorite thing about the team.

by jamesington on Aug 18, 2010 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Because it's called football most other places in the world.

If you have no particular love for American football it makes plenty of sense to call it football.

by Aaron Campeau on Aug 18, 2010 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

'FC' is just a traditional abbreviation

That’s all. Otherwise, it’s soccer. It’s annoying when people around the US call it football. Yeah we get it, it’s football in most everywhere else. But it’s soccer here, it’s part of us. I agree with Aaron Campeau, there seems to be some sort of inferiority complex going on.

Huh

Three artificial surfaces in this group. Saprissa’s is notoriously bad, though.

by ubelmann on Aug 17, 2010 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Saprissa's old Turf is GONE

They just put in a brand new surface

Leo talked about it….

Awesome

That old stuff was nasty. Maybe FIFA finally made them upgrade.

by ubelmann on Aug 17, 2010 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm assuming that in Group C...

…we are generally cheering for draws in non-Sounder games in addition to Sounder wins. At least until teams sort themselves out somewhat.

by ubelmann on Aug 17, 2010 7:08 PM PDT reply actions

Any result against a Mexican club is good too

Think Draw first
Monterey Loss second

by Dave Clark on Aug 17, 2010 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, generally speaking I would think a Monterrey loss would be good

But if Monterrey comes out of the gate and wins two or three games, we probably are just as well off if they can keep Saprissa or Marathon from getting any more points.

by ubelmann on Aug 17, 2010 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Tonight a Monterey loss is the goal

We’ll worry a lot more about results later

For now the Sounders can define themselves.

Monterrey up 1-0

I’d say Monterrey is generally dominating so far. Saprissa has had a couple of nice balls forward, but no real sustained pressure going forward.

by ubelmann on Aug 17, 2010 7:32 PM PDT reply actions

Saprissa hasn't been looking that great in the back

Keeper stopped the ball more or less by sitting on it (pretty fortunate not to allow a goal) and then a bit later, an attempted clearance ricocheted off a defender for a corner kick (and near own goal.) I don’t know how much of that to attribute to Monterrey’s attack, though they should probably get a lot of the credit.

by ubelmann on Aug 17, 2010 7:46 PM PDT reply actions

And that's that

Monterrey takes care of business at home

30 minutes from another round of MLS and CCL Glory!

Crew and RSL both go tonight. After yesterday I’m believing that anything can happen.

Crew up 1-0

Nice shot by Ekpo to take the lead over Municipal

by Dizzo on Aug 18, 2010 5:21 PM PDT reply actions

Nice footwork too

Ekpo certainly had a nice play getting in the box to get the shot. It’s too bad the Crew stadium is half empty. :-(

by Dizzo on Aug 18, 2010 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

TFC had 15,000

Crew no where near that

They contract with different outfits to produce each game, so you never know what you get. The camera work for the Toronto game was laughable at times, when the ball wasn’t even in the frame.

by jamesington on Aug 18, 2010 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Sounders v Metapan away game?

Yikes. Looked like some fan had a home video camera in the stands. And the commentating…holy crap.

by chrisperry1983 on Aug 18, 2010 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I have to follow this one on matchtracker while I get dinner ready

but there’s an interesting thing.

The Crew foul basically as much in their offensive third as they do their defensive third, and only one in the middle (O’Rourke’s Yellow).

Muncipal is only fouling in their offensive third.

Crew win 1-0

RSL about to see if MLS can go three straight. Probably a solid shot as well, considering they have a strong homefield advantage.

RSL is phoning this one in

Lots of plodding around the field. Almost no runs into space. The shape of the back line looks pretty bad.

by Dizzo on Aug 18, 2010 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

Time for RSL to pile on the goals

Up a man for 60 minutes at altitude should be big.

How many has Espindola rocketed over in the past 5 mins?

Ahhh.

So close. Frustrating.

by Nevtelen on Aug 18, 2010 8:52 PM PDT reply actions

Nice!! PK!!

Come on RSL! Wow, Arabe United is annoying. They totally deserve that PK.

by Nevtelen on Aug 18, 2010 8:57 PM PDT reply actions

Nice job Gravanovy

At least the announcers could know the names.

by Nevtelen on Aug 18, 2010 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

So I think every other MLS team has won their game in the group stage so far, right?

Come on Sounders! That would be huge if we could say the same (especially since the rest of the teams were at home).
