Gamethread: Sounders at Marathon of Honduras
The Seattle Sounders open up their Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions League on the road. This is different from the other MLS teams that went 3-0-0 to start Round One, and it should not be overlooked. Over the past two season of the CCL, the Home advantage has been a massive 0.8125 goal advantage.
That means even a point tonight is huge. A win changes everything.
Scouting Report | Match Day Quick Reference Card
The keys to this game are simple
1 - Use the Height Advantage. It doesn't matter if Nate Jaqua starts or not. Seattle will be the taller team. Score a header and force that defense into a more traditional 5-3-2. And I know that isn't very traditional, but its closer than a 3-4-1-2.
2 - Get the Other Winger Into the Game Early. Whoever takes the pitch in the place of Zakuani has to get involved early. Those touches can change how they feel about the game, about their teammates, and about themselves. Roger Levesque, Nate Jaqua or Miguel Montano all have distinct advantages. The one who starts must make an early declaration that they deserved it.
3 - Physicality doesn't Matter. Metapan tried it and it was laughable. Seattle is used to getting fouled. Don't focus on that. The refereeing will suck. It doesn't matter. Put shots on goal and move on.

Who would you like to see get the start on the other wing?
Jeremiah and I thought Roger Levesque when we did the game card.

If its Roger, the wings will be considerably slower than they have been with Zak and Sanna running them.
That being said, I would prefer Montano, he brings the electricity to go with the kits.
He didn't go.
Montano, I agree
I think the Latin American playing experience possibly counts for more than we’re admitting. (As we saw last night.) He may be an early sub, but Montano could know how to play to the weaknesses of this Marathon side better than Levesque may.
Vamos a ver, no?
Wow
We got Levesque right, but a surprise Marshall start.

How about Alejandro Moreno? Without Ljundberg, there’s a certain diving touch missing from the Sounders (I kid, I kid).

So I'm watching this in Spanish again.
I think it’s a big step up over FSC broadcasting.
Now with more lemon bars!
I may have to learn spanish then

I understand almost none of it.
But at least it doesn’t get on my nerves like FSC broadcasting does.

Do you need to?
I mean, FSC is an abortion of a channel.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
Thank god Versus is apparently interested in picking up FSC’s package.

You're way ahead of us.
You had that post up as the ball was entering the goal.
Oh, haha, I’ll be a bit slower going forward. Are you all watching on an HD feed (be it FSC or Galavision)? Cause Comcast doesn’t offer FSC in HD and SD feeds are usually a split second ahead of HD feeds — at least on cable.

Stupid Question...
Is the group stage of this tournament determined by aggregate scoring?
Here are tiebreaker
1.Greater number of points earned in matches between the teams concerned
2.Greater goal difference in matches between the teams concerned
3.Greater number of goals scored away from home in matches between the teams concerned
4.Reapply first three criteria if two or more teams are still tied
5.Greater goal difference in all group matches
6.Greater number of goals scored in group matches
7.Greater number of goals scored away in all group matches
8.Drawing of lots

Seriously?
You’re a cougar fan. Shouldn’t you be used to this sort of thing?
Thank you Marshall
You have officially made it that much easier to drop you below someone who can still play.
Terrible call.
But Marshall needs to play that better. On this turf he needs to know the ball isn’t going to run like it would at Qwest. Mostly just a terrible call though.
Well, look at it this way: at least it wasn’t a red card. Exact same thing has happened to the Union twice this year and it resulted in ejections both times.

HIghway robbery
Apparently when you go on attack and get studs in the knee on the edge of the box, it’s nothing, but when a you run into a defender who is trying to clear, it goes on the spot.
what is the ref
suppose to do when defender make contact like that. It somewhat forces the the ref to make the decision.
I disagree
i just don’t like to see anything that forces the refs hand regardless if it was a good call or not.
and
you’ll see that regardless if its UEFA or Concacaf.
I think
Seattle is fortunately to not be behind by more than 1 goal.
Eh..
While we were definitely second best I don’t think Marathon had too many chances. I think a one goal differene is probably about right.
i'm bashing
that on the pressure Marathon put on Seattle and it almost resulted in a 2nd goal for them prior to the PK.
Sounders actually winning the ShOG battle
There’s a little bit of hope from that
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
Perhaps
seattle can keep that up and possible tie it up and maybe if they are lucky take the lead again.
I'm happy I wasn't the ref...
It was always hard for me to make calls like that. When I knew for sure there was no intent.
It would
also be a hard call for me to make if i was ref.
If it's close, always better to just knock it out as a Keeper.
I have no problem with Keller’s decision to play it safe.

I came into

Also, a lineup without Marshall.

Seattle
needs to convert those corners to have a actually chance imo. We aren’t going to get those goals off of opponent mistakes or the perfect back pass to a open place that can put it in the net.
