Vagenas to Injured List/Disabled List/Injured Reserve

None of this for the next 5 MLS games

Retroactive so that the San Jose game counts as one of his six minimum games missed.

Non-injured players capable of playing in the central midfield are: Alonso, Sturgis, Fernandez, Seamon and Ianni.

This means that a roster slot is temporarily open. Should they use it? Choices are min. contract guy or 3rd DP. That's it. They can not add an average player.

The following is a team release

Midfielder Peter Vagenas Placed on Disabled List

RENTON, WASH. - The Seattle Sounders FC announced today midfielder Peter Vagenas has been placed on disabled list due to a right quadriceps strain.

As a result, Vagenas, 32, is required to miss six games. Included in those six games was the San Jose Earthquakes match on July 31, and he is eligible to return to league play for the September 9 game in Seattle against the Real Salt Lake.

Vagenas, in his 10th season in Major League Soccer, has started all seven appearances in 2010 and has played a total of 542 minutes.

Wow

The injury bug has bit this team a lot this season, but they are too strong now for this loss to really slow them down.

Sorry for Vagenas

I’m sorry to hear that Vagenas is on the IR. It’s always bad when you see a player leave the pitch without a challenge near them. I wish him luck and a full recovery.

I don’t think this will affect the Sounders play too much. Thankfully, we have Alonso back in to play the CDM.

Vagenas

I got a lot of grief (mostly in jest I think) about feeling down about Vagenas’ injury. And while I am not a big fan of his work, we are in pretty desperate straits with the run of games we are going to have and not enough fresh legs to fill them. I don’t think we want just those 5 playing all the minutes at CM from here on out so I really hope they add someone.

It will be tight. We were looking really good with Ianni at CD and I’d hate to see him log-in a lot of minutes at CDM just because the Sounders are short-handed.

I think we’ll be seeing a lot of Sturgis in the near future. Also, is it possible to play either Levesque or Jaqua as a CAM coming off the bench? Obviously, it’s not an ideal position for them, but they might have the passing and vision for the role.

Playoffs? Playoffs?

But with the number of games it will be pretty dang hard to have the stamina to make a playoff run if we get there. I don’t know who it would be but I think we need an “inning-eater” if nothing else.

Getting Evans back will be key

He should be able to operate at any of the midfield spots effectively and Dave and I believe Jaqua could probably handle most of the offensive mid positions as well. Vagenas’ loss definitely hurts, but I’m really hoping we can fill his absence with Evans mostly and Jaqua in emergency.

With NYRB

announcing Marquez tomorrow, I say we wait until we can get a share of the allocation money then bring in a 3rd DP. Well, actually I still think using our 3rd slot on Fredy would be a better move, especially if we lock him up for 2 more years.

By which I meant, I’m not sure how we fill this whole. The other possibility is Evans coming back soon, which I’d be for, but nothing that I can think of otherwise.

Do we have to payback the allocation money?

I have been curious about this. Do we have to give back our share if we add a 3rd DP? Is there a time limit, i.e. if we add a 3rd DP within a week we have to pay it back whereas we don’t if we add one next season? It has been frustratingly difficult to figure out any of those details. Which is odd, because MLS tries to be so transparent.

Fucito

I really haven’t heard anything about how he’s doing. Be great to see him back… as he’s been out most of the season now…..

Not likely

He was eligible to return on June 24th, but the fact that we haven’t seen him in any non-league games, or even on the bench, is worrying. Contrast with Estrada, who scored a goal for us a mere 3 days after being placed on the DL and was on the bench for Metapán. There isn’t anyone else on the DL eligible to return. So that would mean signing someone, but who? Jamel Wallace? If we win the tie with Metapán, we’re going to need every body we can get.

Too bad

I know his form hasn’t been great lately, but I have been a fan of Vagenas and hate to see him go down like this. I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for him, as he has been injured for long lengths of time before. And he’s getting up there.

Vagenas, Vagenas, Vagenas

He is a descent player. We are trying to be more than a descent club. Our manager is attached to players from the past. I’m sorry he got hurt. He seems like a really nice guy, but this is serious. We are trying to build a dominating team. The coach loves him and the fans don’t. Why? Because he adds experience, which the coach loves. He also adds a lack of attacking ability. I don’t know if that is due to skill or age, but he definitely slows the team down. I think it is good at this point. He has only five games left and by then we will see if he is really needed anymore.
