Official Web site: http://www.terra.com.mx/rayadosMonterrey's Champions League debut featured a goal by Aldo De Negris midway through the first half of its home victory over Saprissa on August 17. In its Mexican Primera División match on August 21 at Pachuca, Monterrey struck twice in nine minutes to take the lead but eventually settled for a 2-2 draw. The Rayados, undefeated (3-0-2) in the first five games of the Apertura, qualified by winning the 2009 Apertura title, beating Cruz Azul 6-4 on aggregate. Chilean Humberto Suazo, who has since joined Spain's Real Zaragoza on loan, helped lead the Rayados to their third major Mexican league crown. Although Suazo is gone, Monterrey is home to Mexican international Luis Perez, longtime former Mexican center back Duilo Davino and Jesus Arellano. Monterrey plays at 32,000-seat Estadio Tecnologico, the second oldest stadium in Mexico after Estadio Azul. Plans are in the works for the club to move to Estadio de Futbol Monterrey in Guadalupe, a 50,000-seat stadium pattered after Wembley Stadium in England. The team is owned by FEMSA, the largest beverage company in Mexico and Mexican Victor Manuel Vucetich is the manager, the team's 25th since 1962.
Seattle will face its most difficult opponent in a competitive match, doing this with the continuing injuries, as well as Yellow Card accumalation. How can Seattle get three vital points in this game, as 7 are the minimum needed at home.
1 - Maintain Defensive Shape - Backline communication will be massive. The centerback pairing will be dealing with players of quality that probably only the LA Galaxy and Red Bull New York have in MLS.
2 - Surprise them with the talents of the skill players - Seattle Forward pairing of Blaise Nkufo and Fredy Montero, along with Steve Zakuani, have the technical ability to play in leagues better than MLS. Give them the ball and let them succeed, specifically the big man.
3 - Kasey Keller

Perez is playing, Santana is not
I’M SO SORRY I MISLED YOU ALL! I’M SO DISAPPOINTED IN MYSELF!
Just kidding. Called Suazo, Ayovi, and Osorio sitting, I’m happy with my showing.
good work

Just so you all know
Perez in, Santana out is slightly more defensive than the lineup on the lineup card.

Wow!
Waiting on the game to start and watching the RSL v CAZ game. That field is terrible! There’s 10 foot puddles in the pitch.
Now with more lemon bars!
I feel for them.
That pitch is just destroying their defenders and goalie. You can just see it in the way they have to anchor themselves to the ground before pushing off when trying to stop an attack. Or you can see it in them constantly falling over.
Now with more lemon bars!
Holy hell 2 goals in the 87th and 88th minute to get CAZ the win over RSL
MLS just can’t catch a break in Mexico
Sorry Sounders but the Cruz Azul RSL match is the best thing ever
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Aug 25, 2010 7:12 PM PDT reply actions
Holy crap...
Cruz Azul has 5, and there fans missed a crazy match. stands are empty.
You said that there were like six starters in there.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Aug 25, 2010 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions
7 starters to start the game, 2 subbed on.
9 first team guys played. Orozco, Torrado, Pinto, Villa went 90. I’d rather rest them than win in CCL.
by KevinMcCauley on Aug 25, 2010 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah but y'all haven't played too well in league play, have you?
Might as well try to win something.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Aug 25, 2010 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions
We're top of Group 3
4-1-0 on the season. Just 1 bad performance against Pumas.
by KevinMcCauley on Aug 25, 2010 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Anyone got a stream that's up to date?
My current one seems to be 10 minutes behind.
Now with more lemon bars!
The CCL announcer sort of mumbles the names of the players, also as much as I love montero…he is an epic flopper.

He also keeps saying...
Zach Scott is in….but its Sturgis right?
Where is he then...Riley, Parke, Ianni and Gonzalez in the back
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Aug 25, 2010 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Gahhh
Great pass to Nyassi but Nyassi…you can’t shove the defender in the back.
Now with more lemon bars!
Sean Connery is doing the play-by-play??!

Wow
I think everyone on both teams expected Montero to take the shot there.
Now with more lemon bars!
well I guess we had to very different feelings, eh.
I hope tonight he connects, obviously…though I would be equally happy is Keller scores.

Nkufo has looked dangerous so far
and the team seems to be making a conscious effort to look for him.
Now with more lemon bars!
indeed
give Blaise the service and he will find the back of the net.
and now I can stop trying to watch this on a choppy connection that rebuffers every 5 seconds.
most annoying half in awhile
wow Nyassi...
3 yellow jerseys in the box and cross it directly to the white one…
Formula so far: sounders dominate the first 10-15 minutes, don’t take advantage of rusty opponent’s defense, opponent becomes comfortable and confident, scores.

Jaquas coming on at half
Don’t know who for.
by Brian Floyd on Aug 25, 2010 7:55 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
that would
be and improvement to put Jaqua at RW.
Jaqua for Nkufo
Nkufo didn’t come out of the locker room.
by Brian Floyd on Aug 25, 2010 8:06 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
Oh
well. That doesn’t surprise me that seattle pulled Kufo at half especially seattle has a game on saturday.
From the Concacaf live scoring site
“44’ Nyassi does some fine work down the right flank but his cross is disappointing and Monterrey clear.”
The story of his career. I hope all Sigi has him do in practice is crossing drills. He has so much potential.
Perhaps
Nassi should practice taking headers as well.
Apparently he has a lot of things he needs to practice

can't blame for the
unable to finish if there is no good service with the exception of 1 good service.
we look gassed now...
any guesses on subs? also, what minute is it? the feed doesn’t have a clock on it..
With all the practice we get at corners
you’d think we’d be better at them.
Now with more lemon bars!
I have
no faith seattle will get a corner kick goal this year or another one if they had one already.
i hope
seattle takes care of the service problem during the off season
Sub-par league, clap, clap, clap.

Ref has actually had a solid game I think
though there has been a lot less flapping then what we saw in the previous games.
Now with more lemon bars!
and
the refs don’t seem to really care about it.
I liked it when the ref told the player being subbed to hurry off the pitch
and then the player stopped to hug a teammate. Then continued his slow walk off the pitch. And the ref did nothing.
Now with more lemon bars!
You are up by 2 goals.
Do you really need to time waste this much Monterrey?
Now with more lemon bars!
"Marshall cannot get there?"
Umm, a.k.a. Alvaro Fernandez. Is this guy this calling out random names and hoping to get lucky?
I appreciate the camera giving some love to ECS...
but would you mind showing the game when we have possession at the 18? kthxbye
Telefutura keeps showing replays while we have possession
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Aug 25, 2010 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Nyassi, you're supposed to cut the ball back there and let the defender overrun, and then shoot while under control with your left foot
You did exactly the opposite of all of those things
It was easy(ish) to forgive the mental mistakes when he was scoring/assisting
but now it’s just getting frustrating.
Now with more lemon bars!
was more frustrating for me when everyone was drooling all over him...
by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Well I think the drool has ended
and it might start turning into frustration. Fans are fickle like that. Except for Robert.
Now with more lemon bars!
Dear Sounders:
The goal is not 30 feet high. It’s not 20 feet high. I know you really want to score, but please take a second to aim lower in the future. Thank you.
Now with more lemon bars!
Officially transferring my hopes to the USOC, maybe next year Sounders.

Yep
i have already declared the CCL over for seattle.
I didn't really expect the Sounders to win tonight...
but, this has definitely left me disappointed. Feels like so much missed opportunity, and we really should have done better.
true...
but, surely one, if not two, could have gone in if we weren’t so piss poor at set pieces, and didn’t send about 20 shots a game over the frame
We've made a ton of mistakes to be sure.
But we’ve also had a lot of shots that could easily have gone in.
Now with more lemon bars!
neither
did I but it doesn’t give me any hope that seattle has a shot at winning a game or two in the CCL.
After what happened between RSL and Cruz Azul...
I’m gonna wait this one out. Granted, we’re not playing in a swamp… but still.
They have a much better record
I really doubt they’re a much better team
by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions
Well
they did score 4 against Cruz Azul and seattle can’t score one in todays game.
Games played on a lake are historically the best way of measuring talent
They also conceded five
by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions
I've got lots of words.
But I said them all out loud instead of typing them.
Now with more lemon bars!
at this late in the game
it wouldn’t really mattered imo.
Particularly in a tournament that uses tiebreakers
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Aug 25, 2010 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions
That's
only if seattle and who ever is 2nd are tied in the group standing but seattle getting to the point where they could tie for 2nd totally is up in the air.
I would be
happy for a goal 30mins to an hour ago.

I love this Graham.
Your anger makes it so much easier for me to shrug off this loss.
Now with more lemon bars!
I just hate it when tactical decisions screw the team :(
by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh I am incredibly frustrated as well.
But you venting basically lets me not vent. Because you did it for me.
Now with more lemon bars!
This game made me swear for the first time since they gave me my blog :(
by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions
Normally I'm in the same boat.
I just groan. But this game was more frustrating then any game I’ve seen in a long time, for a multitude of reasons.
Now with more lemon bars!
I tend
to swear a lot at sports games but given i still live at home i can’t really do that when my parents in the house.
I
don’t blame you. Honestly at this point i think seattle needs a total revamp in the mids in the upcoming off season.
It's not even the players
It’s the complete rigidity of the system
by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions
Just
shows that seattle has a ways to go to be considered a quality team imo.
we have plenty of quality...
…just never in the final third.
by Michael Wiegand on Aug 25, 2010 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions
and
what exactly does it take to get that darn quality in the final third with the talent seattle has now?
Offsides
Maybe you guys can help me out. I don’t remember the play clearly enough so I’m thinking I must be missing something. When they called back that goal on Jaqua for being offsides, wasn’t it off a rebound? How can he be offsides if he’s behind the ball? Did I miss something?
Rebounds and deflections do not reset offsides
by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions
Hypothetically
I know now it wasn’t called as offsides, but just so I understand this rule. If a player collects a rebound and there is no defender between closer to the goal line, he’s offsides? I always thought that you can’t be offsides as long as the ball is in front of you, regardless of where the defenders are. Or do they call a rebound a pass from the player that takes the shot? If so that just seems stupid
They call a rebound a pass from the player who takes the shot
It’s to prevent easy goals off crossbars/posts/goalies
by Graham MacAree on Aug 26, 2010 6:42 AM PDT up reply actions
Really?
So then they would have to call it offsides based on where the player was when the shot was taken, which I wouldn’t be able to keep track of as an armchair ref in the stands, let alone as a linesman. I guess I just think that rule about offsides takes it too far, it takes away the incentive to attack.
True but that wasn't the call...
Offsides was called on Montero. FSC commentators said that AR must have thought ball was deflected on set piece by offensive player before Montero header. Actually was defensive deflection before Montero header so everyone was onside based on positions when set piece was struck by Sounders. FSC commentators said bad call, Sigi said bad call after seeing replay, Montero mentioned deflection off of defender but ‘AR saw what he saw.’
Thanks mark
That makes sense after looking back at it.
