Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Gamethread: Sounders host Monterrey

Scouting ReportLineup Card - General preview

Notes from CONCACAF on the Opponent

About Monterrey (Courtesy of CONCACAF)
Club: Club de Futbol Monterrey
Founded: 1945
City: Monterrey, Mexico
Stadium: Estadio Tecnologico
Manager: Victor Manuel Vucetich
Qualification method: Mexican Apertura winner
Previous Champions League appearances: None
Honors: Mexico league - 3 (1986, 2003, 2009); Copa Mexico - 1 (1991); CONCACAF Cup Winners Cup - 1 (1993)
Official Web site: http://www.terra.com.mx/rayados

Monterrey's Champions League debut featured a goal by Aldo De Negris midway through the first half of its home victory over Saprissa on August 17. In its Mexican Primera División match on August 21 at Pachuca, Monterrey struck twice in nine minutes to take the lead but eventually settled for a 2-2 draw. The Rayados, undefeated (3-0-2) in the first five games of the Apertura, qualified by winning the 2009 Apertura title, beating Cruz Azul 6-4 on aggregate. Chilean Humberto Suazo, who has since joined Spain's Real Zaragoza on loan, helped lead the Rayados to their third major Mexican league crown. Although Suazo is gone, Monterrey is home to Mexican international Luis Perez, longtime former Mexican center back Duilo Davino and Jesus Arellano. Monterrey plays at 32,000-seat Estadio Tecnologico, the second oldest stadium in Mexico after Estadio Azul. Plans are in the works for the club to move to Estadio de Futbol Monterrey in Guadalupe, a 50,000-seat stadium pattered after Wembley Stadium in England. The team is owned by FEMSA, the largest beverage company in Mexico and Mexican Victor Manuel Vucetich is the manager, the team's 25th since 1962.

Seattle will face its most difficult opponent in a competitive match, doing this with the continuing injuries, as well as Yellow Card accumalation. How can Seattle get three vital points in this game, as 7 are the minimum needed at home.

1 - Maintain Defensive Shape - Backline communication will be massive. The centerback pairing will be dealing with players of quality that probably only the LA Galaxy and Red Bull New York have in MLS.

2 - Surprise them with the talents of the skill players - Seattle Forward pairing of Blaise Nkufo and Fredy Montero, along with Steve Zakuani, have the technical ability to play in leagues better than MLS. Give them the ball and let them succeed, specifically the big man.

3 - Kasey Keller

Wow!

Waiting on the game to start and watching the RSL v CAZ game. That field is terrible! There’s 10 foot puddles in the pitch.

I feel for them.

That pitch is just destroying their defenders and goalie. You can just see it in the way they have to anchor themselves to the ground before pushing off when trying to stop an attack. Or you can see it in them constantly falling over.

by jacobcda on Aug 25, 2010 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I keep thinking he might be mistaking Ianni for Scott? Cause he kept saying Scott all first half. And he also keeps saying FER-DI-NAZ and I heard him say FUKO in place of Nkufo. He’s ace, clearly.

From the Concacaf live scoring site

“44’ Nyassi does some fine work down the right flank but his cross is disappointing and Monterrey clear.”

The story of his career. I hope all Sigi has him do in practice is crossing drills. He has so much potential.

by jacobcda on Aug 25, 2010 8:45 PM PDT reply actions

true...

but, surely one, if not two, could have gone in if we weren’t so piss poor at set pieces, and didn’t send about 20 shots a game over the frame

by jacobcda on Aug 25, 2010 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

We've made a ton of mistakes to be sure.

But we’ve also had a lot of shots that could easily have gone in.

by gstommylee on Aug 25, 2010 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I

don’t blame you. Honestly at this point i think seattle needs a total revamp in the mids in the upcoming off season.

by gstommylee on Aug 25, 2010 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not even the players

It’s the complete rigidity of the system

by Graham MacAree on Aug 25, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea

that doesn’t help either.

by gstommylee on Aug 25, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Just

shows that seattle has a ways to go to be considered a quality team imo.

by gstommylee on Aug 25, 2010 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

and

what exactly does it take to get that darn quality in the final third with the talent seattle has now?

by gstommylee on Aug 26, 2010 8:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Offsides

Maybe you guys can help me out. I don’t remember the play clearly enough so I’m thinking I must be missing something. When they called back that goal on Jaqua for being offsides, wasn’t it off a rebound? How can he be offsides if he’s behind the ball? Did I miss something?

by rabadash on Aug 25, 2010 10:45 PM PDT reply actions

Hypothetically

I know now it wasn’t called as offsides, but just so I understand this rule. If a player collects a rebound and there is no defender between closer to the goal line, he’s offsides? I always thought that you can’t be offsides as long as the ball is in front of you, regardless of where the defenders are. Or do they call a rebound a pass from the player that takes the shot? If so that just seems stupid

by rabadash on Aug 26, 2010 3:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Really?

So then they would have to call it offsides based on where the player was when the shot was taken, which I wouldn’t be able to keep track of as an armchair ref in the stands, let alone as a linesman. I guess I just think that rule about offsides takes it too far, it takes away the incentive to attack.

by rabadash on Aug 26, 2010 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

True but that wasn't the call...

Offsides was called on Montero. FSC commentators said that AR must have thought ball was deflected on set piece by offensive player before Montero header. Actually was defensive deflection before Montero header so everyone was onside based on positions when set piece was struck by Sounders. FSC commentators said bad call, Sigi said bad call after seeing replay, Montero mentioned deflection off of defender but ‘AR saw what he saw.’
