Adidas + MLS Very Excited About New Deal

So excited they sent me a press release (I am not normally on this email distro list).

It is important to realize that in a bad economy that has seen sponsorship dollars falling that MLS' teams will basically be getting 50% more per year. The relationship with Generation Adidas will continue as well, and there may be money, or other compensation for the upcoming Reserve League.

MLS did well here, in light of the economy. The release is below the break.

ADIDAS AND MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER EXTEND PARTNERSHIP

New Agreement Will Shape Future of Soccer in North America

PORTLAND, Ore./NEW YORK – adidas and Major League Soccer today announced an extension to their strategic partnership agreement aimed at further elevating soccer in the United States and developing opportunities for young players.  The partnership extends adidas’ position as the official athletic sponsor and product supplier for the MLS through 2018.

Core to the new agreement is a dedicated focus on youth development and programming to help shape the future of the sport in North America.

"The United States is a breeding ground for athletic talent and we need to ensure our homegrown athletes have viable opportunities to play soccer at the highest level," said Patrik Nilsson, president, adidas America.  "We need to accelerate the model for soccer development in North America to attract and keep elite talent engaged and excited about professional opportunities in the sport.  We share a long-term vision with MLS to develop the game and are excited to foster the next generation of American soccer stars."

adidas has been a partner of MLS since the league’s inception in 1996.  In 2004, adidas and MLS announced an exclusive partnership agreement that named adidas the official athletic sponsor and product supplier, outfitting all league teams and supplying the league’s official match ball.

"One of the major reasons Major League Soccer has become one of the top soccer leagues in the world is due to the support and commitment of adidas," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber.  "They have a clear vision for the sport in North America, and they see MLS as a cornerstone of that vision.  Our extension with adidas is a major statement by an internationally respected brand that MLS is increasing in value and that our commitments to stadium construction, strategic expansion, player development and improvement in the overall quality of play are playing dividends."

adidas is the global leader in soccer and partners with many of the world’s greatest soccer clubs and federations including Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Germany and Japan.  adidas is an official partner of FIFA, UEFA and the Confederations of African Football.  adidas also sponsors world-class athletes like Juan Pablo Angel, Jozy Altidore, Fredy Montero, Lionel Messi, Kaka, Steven Gerrard, Michael Ballack, Xavi, Frank Lampard and Andres Guardado, among others.

Reserve League

Would that equal more of a minor league or a 2nd tier league where regulation becomes a possibility?

Lets hope they don't ruin the Sounders kits for next season...

because imo they’ve ruined every team’s kits that got a new one this year. Especially the Fire, DC United, and whatever other teams they added those shiny x strips to.

Other than horrible new kits this year. The rest of the partnership seems to be working out pretty well. But i’m definitely worried about our new kits…

Oh, there will be a new kit next year

As every MLS team switches every two years.

Yea... I know there will be

I’m worried they will follow in the same vein as the new ones this year… which all are pretty awful when compared to their old ones. Biggest thing is I don’t want a shiny X across the back reaching over the shoulders like on DC United, Chicago Fire’s… The kit where that X strip things especially ruined it were the black Germany ones for the WC.

Please adidas don’t let whoever designed this years design ours. Please, pretty please…

Shiny X's are so 2010

I’m sure there will be some other fugly fashion fad for 2011 that they’ll work in. I’m guessing for a return of the 16th century codpiece. ;-)

Shiny X's

Are by player preference. Some players choose not to wear them.

I hope they don't look like the warm up shirts they're wearing this year.

I was first aware of them watching footage of Ljunberg greeting some of the Sounders. Both teams’ warm up shirts were just ugly remixes of the colors.

Ugh. Adidas kits look like pajamas.

I was really hoping that Nike would have made a bid with portland coming into the league.

Adidas is portland based as well

I'm happy

that Adidas is commited to the MLS and it’s future. It makes me want to support them, ugly jerseys or not.
