If Goals Plus Assists Was a Stat...

Fredy Montero would be at the top of the list.

  GoalsAssistsTotal
Fredy Montero 8 9 17
Landon Donovan 5 11 16
Sebastien Le Toux 9 6 15
Edson Buddle 12 2 14
Juan Pablo Angel 11 2 13

In the NHL it's called Points, and it's a perfectly reasonable stat. An attacking player should be able to take his own chances as well as create chances for others. MLS should make it official.

College Soccer uses 2*G plus A for points

And we use that here fairly often. It is on every League match day card

But I don't like that version..

because it puts Buddle ahead of Montero.

Honestly, Edson Buddle. . Would you rather have him or Fredy?

MLS counts secondary assists

so Goals have to count more

True, but so does the NHL

and they use the G + A formula.

Anyway, I didn’t realize until I just researched it that until 2005, the MLS was giving out the Golden Boot (or whatever it was called) based on 2g+a points. So I guess that’s pretty definitive.

Which puts Fredy in second.

I have questions about the secondary assist

Does anyone know what the definition is? That is, what separates a secondary assist from just a pass to the guy who made the assist?

by CarlosT on Aug 11, 2010 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

In NHL or MLS

In hockey, it’s as simple as touching the puck before the guy who has the primary assist. In MLS, it’s supposed to have a direct affect on the goal.

Okay, that's getting closer

But what do they mean by “direct effect on the goal”? I’m guessing it might be something like a guy crosses the ball in, which gets flicked over to a teammate who scores. Is that right? If that’s right, how much does the primary assister have to do to “take away” the secondary assist. If the cross comes in, the guy settles instead of flicking, dribbles five yards and then passes to the teammate who scores, does that negate the secondary assist for the guy who crossed?

Or am I not thinking of this right?

The way I understand it

I’m pretty sure scorekeepers look for reasons to give assists, as opposed to looking for reasons to be convinced. I imagine the scorekeeper has a lot of leeway, but generally speaking I think the err on the side of giving the assist.

So... MLS is very active in stat inflation?

(Notice the properly formed ellipsis, by the way.)

From what we’ve discussed, every pass to the guy who made the assist should be a secondary assist, but we know that isn’t true, because Jaqua just got a secondary assist taken away. This secondary assist thing is as clear as mud.

At least you're honest

MLS Stats

MLS can barely get their website to display stats correctly… and now you want them to add them up too! Insanity! :)

You are correct though. MLS really needs to boost the number production. I want stats on everything from passes connected to distance covered to times Nyassi looks up while dribbling.

Who needs the MLS website?

The stats you asked for are 30%, ‘not enough’, and 0.5.
