2011: The Year of Change - a links post
Two teams are being added to MLS in 2011
Portland got a kit sponsor | I feel like it should be Horizon Air, because aren't they Alaska's little brother?
Vancouver announced their coach | This was a Teitur v. Yallop, and one was available. A great choice for our nothern brethern.
Will the USA, Canada and Mexico all have players counting as domestics next year? Is NAFTA really going to be that big of an influence on the sport? Will MLS use this rule as a way to help the Canadian teams overall, and help the league as well. It would also anger the FMF a bit, and that may be a plus too.
World Cup hosts will be known, and the USA passes 1 Million. If you haven't yet, please register your support for the USA an Seattle.
USSF Division Two will be in major flux as the NASL bid is in with 6 for-certains (minus Edmonton?) and 4 who-knows, and what about Austin, will Rochester stay in D2, or move to D3?
We'll know how good adding two officials actually does, as the Champions League will have tried it.
Will Versus become NBC Sports, and will MLS be on it? [correction made from earlier, thanks to readers who are also editors, because I missed it twice]
Oh, and tickets are on sale for the US Open Cup Final. Oct. 5 is time for Trophy #2 in the Sounders young history. Get your seats and watch the Rave Green win a title.

Minor correction
NBS Sports=NBC Sports.
This has been rumored for awhile around MMA circles when the Comcast deal first occurred. If you notice with MMA ,Zuffa soon signed a contract with VS so that they would show 4 UFC shows on that channel and reworked their deal with Spike to do so. NBC Sports will be big in the future.
I don't understand the correction
As the link states, there is an expectation that Versus will be rebranded to better fit within the overarching brand of the combined NBC Sports with Comcast Sports.
This would extend to the regional sports networks, Universal Sports, Golf Channel as well better integration with NBC’s regional news networks.

I hope VS gets the MLS
They’ve done a decent job with the NHL. I think the NHL has the model we should be following in MLS. Build solid support in the stadiums, make going to the game an event. Then leverage the good feelings in the stadium to make the game more popular on TV. VS seems to have the right mind set for building TV popularity out of marginal sports.
They picked up Tour de France long before it was Tour de Lance and rode it to ratings glory. They have also seen success in MMA and NHL and seem to be trying to revive Indy car. They just seem to have a longer view of a sport then ESPN’s.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to be on ESPN, but they don’t seem able to grow their sports. NBA is stuck in neutral, MLB seems stuck in neutral. They did good work in the 80’s turning college basketball into a national phenom, but other then that, I’m struggling to think of a sport they drove from obscurity into the lime light.
With out the same budget to lock up the big name sports, VS has had to build rather then just ride the success of their sports. I really think that is what we need in MLS.
Correct
Will Versus become NBS Sports, and will MLS be on it?
Will Versus become NBS Sports NBC Sports, and will MLS be on it?
Or am I missing what NBS Sports stands for?
Thank you, twice
Once for noting a proper correction.
Twice for being patient with me…

Since half their city is people who couldn't make it in Seattle it is a fitting situation.
NOTE: This dig does not apply to Graham and Kirsten.
That seems like an odd argument to make concerning Canadians
that they need to get work visas and MLS has to treat everyone with a work visa the same. Where is that written? Why can’t MLS just hand-wave it and say, effectively, ‘yes, you need to get a work visa legally, but for our purposes we still consider Canadians domestic’? It’s not like MLS rules need to conform with US law.
When you find a US company that doesn't need to follow US Laws
Please let me know.
If US Law states that you can not make nationality a condition of employment (except for the NAFTA loopholes) then that is law.
Although MLB does have different rules for USA/Canadian amatuers than non-USA/Can but there’s that little anti-trust exemption that changes everything for baseball.

But isn't the quota for Americans/Canadians on a team already doing that?
I realize it’s a little different because they’re domestic vs international, but isn’t that still making nationality a condition of employment?
A company can say that they have different rules for Americans and everyone else
They can not say that they have different rules for Canadians and Mexicans.
The law is different in Canada, which is why Toronto’s roster rules are slightly different.
The idea here would be that league wide all Can/Mex/US players count in one pool, and all others in another pool. It would dramatically increase available talent (currently only 8 Mexican nationals on MLS rosters). It would predominantly be pre-peak non-national team quality Mexican players who could come to MLS

A couple of thoughts
1. It would make a high level Mexican DP a bit more valuable since it doesn’t take up a foreign player spot.
2. It would be an advantage to Chivas USA since they have a pipeline through their parent club to pre-peak Mexican talent.
3. It might boast the appeal of MLS teams to that elusive Mexican American demographic they’ve been trying to reach (since MLS was formed).
