We are 11

Not just an advert for FIFA 11, but the chant for each section of Crew Stadium

This match has great pace

Worth the watch.

Ekpo is just as good as your remember him. Crew’s back-up forwards aren’t doing well enough with what Gaven and Ekpo are providing.

I guess they are going MLS playoffs or bust

Although, given how hard it has been for MLS teams to win in Mexico, one could argue that if you are going to take a CCL group stage game off, it might as well be the one in Mexico.

I still hope they can pull out a win here, it would make the group a lot more interesting. I think that RSL can definitely beat Cruz Azul in Rio Tinto, so if TFC managed a win here, Cruz Azul could conceivably finish the group with 9 points. TFC could get to 10 with a draw against RSL and a victory over Arabe Unido. RSL would get to at least 10 with a draw against TFC and a win against Cruz Azul.

And I think it would be wonderful for the tournament if two MLS teams could keep a FMF side out of the quarters.

That's what I figured, but I was curious

CONCACAF actually seems a lot less transparent than MLS.

by ubelmann on Sep 21, 2010 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

It's run by Jack Warner

so yeah, less transparent. But it’s more likely FSC driving the blackout to protect their advertising.

FSC play by play man

said at the end of the first half that the stadium is not next to a train yard, but that the fans are making the horn noises. At Cruz Azul they laugh at those silly little vuvuzelas.

I think I've had it

I can’t stand watching Mexican teams. It’s infuriating that we lose to them so often.

by chrisperry1983 on Sep 21, 2010 8:34 PM PDT reply actions

I hear you

but they all play the same way, at some point, you’d think a smart MLS coach would figure out how to crack them consistently.

by 108Ultra on Sep 21, 2010 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I like it

Eventually MLS will catch up with FMF, and when we start beating the Mexican teams, it will be a lot more satisfying than, say, beating up on some team from T&T or Jamaica. Plus, considering the potential changes to WC qualifying, we might not get many meaningful games between the USMNT and Mexico, so this is a fun way to carry on that rivalry.

by ubelmann on Sep 21, 2010 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not that we'll "catch up"

I think we have the skill to beat them. We’re just not dirty enough. I feel like our teams are too professional to stoop to that level of hacking, rulebreaking, diving, etc. It’s like watching a bunch of half-skilled players trying to break people in order to win because they can’t do anything else.

by chrisperry1983 on Sep 21, 2010 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think that's a realistic view

MLS teams are plenty dirty. The FMF is the best league in North America, and it’s not particularly close.

It’s not even just games against MLS, either. Who here thinks anyone in MLS could reach the Copa America final?

by ubelmann on Sep 21, 2010 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe I am completely off base here

because I have watched MLS for years and generally only watch Mexican teams in tournaments like this, but MLS games are not this bad by any stretch. Yeah you have your Califfs and O’Rourkes and Morenos that stink things up, and games are physical, but not to this extent. Blatant hacking, comically bad diving all over the place, pushing people down, horse collaring. I don’t know. Maybe they just get ugly when playing US teams because they know the refs will be in their favor.

Anyway. This is the first time for me really following CCL, and I’m pretty turned off by it. I’ve been rooting for all MLS teams, so this isn’t a “Sounders aren’t winning so I don’t care” sort of thing. Watching TFC getting their asses beat while the ref looked on was sort of the last straw.

by chrisperry1983 on Sep 22, 2010 8:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I haven't seen a lot of the games this year...

…but I was at the Sounders-Monterrey game, and I don’t think it was really that bad in terms of dirty play. There was time-wasting, but I really have a difficult time blaming that on the players. Everyone does it to some degree, and in my opinion, the officials don’t do enough to combat time-wasting. There are so many obvious yellows each game with players delaying the restart by unnecessarily stepping in front of the ball, that rule is a total joke. (Which is especially a shame because I think if players weren’t allowed to delay the restart as much by stepping in front of the ball, scoring would increase and skilled teams would be rewarded.)

The officiating is weak, but that’s not going to improve any time soon, and I personally really enjoyed watching Monterrey when they came here. They were clearly very good at moving the ball quickly up the field and watching the skill with which they were able to create dangerous crossing passes from the wings was impressive.

I actually think that the non-Mexican teams tend to be much worse at the physical play, hacking, and play acting because they are generally outclassed, usually understand that, and will do whatever the ref will let them get away with.

What's up with TFC's early subs?

Injuries? I can’t imagine that the master plan was to burn through two subs so that DeRo could come on in the 30th minute. (Or at least if that was the master plan, they should beg Preki to come back.)

I don't necessarily have a hard time seeing...

..the Sounders win their home games, and I don’t necessarily have a hard time seeing Monterrey winning their last two games. (On the road is a bit of a task, but they are clearly the class of the group.) The goal differential issue is going to be a problem, though, since both visiting teams will be 100% willing to make the game ugly to keep it low-scoring.

And then its Away Goals amongst the Tied Teams

So even if Seattle pulls to EVEN with Marathon/Saprissa by GD

Seattle has only 1 away goal. Marathon also already has 1.

I know, I know

But the regular season seemed lost at one point, too! :)

2-0 Marathon now. That was a pretty gorgeous finish for an own goal.

by ubelmann on Sep 22, 2010 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

If nothing else...

…it’s nice to have the reserves in games where we aren’t totally eliminated. It puts them under some pressure—a good kind of pressure.

by ubelmann on Sep 22, 2010 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Marathon win 2-1, Sounders still alive!

Away goals:

3 — Sounders
1 — Saprissa
1 — Marathon

Saprissa and Marathon are only away against the Sounders, in Qwest, so that tiebreaker is under our control. Sounders can pass Marathon on GD with a 3-0 win next week. If Monterrey can win its last two games, then that brings Marathon’s and Saprissa’s GD down by 1. The final ingredient would be a 3-0 victory over Saprissa on October 19th.

If Monterrey does extremely well, back-to-back 2-0 wins might get us through.

by ubelmann on Sep 22, 2010 9:05 PM PDT reply actions

Away goals only matter among tied parties

so Seattle has 1
