Hmm.
Kind of a lame reason for not allowing more traveling fans, IMO.
Hell we could even put them in the upper "arped off sections Its not like we are lacking for room.
Its not going to compromise the integrity of the atmosphere, it should heighten it.
And as for security? Please this is America, and Qwest has plenty of alternate entrances.

We're working on it
Meeting before this one I said to Joe Roth “Don’t you want to help prove that MLS’ stadiums are too small?” He nodded.
This time Gary Wright challenged my college sports comparison and said that it isn’t as if Michigan sets aside seats for Ohio State. I said they did, he said they didn’t. I actually can’t find that answer.
I do know that the Huskies set aside a BLOCK of 1000s for Nebraska. Duke sets aside for Notre Dame.
For the most part in college sports a section is set-aside for traveling fans, usually students.
I find that college sports in America are most like MLS for fan support overall.

Almost positive that they set aside seats at Michigan-OSU
I’ll check up on this for you.

That would be great
Not just if, but how many.

And that should have been Duke for North Carolina
And USC for Notre Dame

Pac-10 basketball..
Each team has to set aside a minimum of 100 tickets for away fans (25 behind the bench and the other 75 together in a group).
Pac-10 away ticket regs are on page 29 of the Pac-10 Handbook.

Would it not make sense
for the FOs of all 3 teams to get together, say “Hey, we got something special here”, and work on an arrangement together. At the very least, more seats sold is more money (something they would all understand).
As for security, Portland had a good size contingent up here for the preseason match…no significant issues I was aware of. We also had a good chunk of folks for the Open Cup match down there…
The front offices
and the supporter groups started talking about a year ago.
Portland’s stadium is so small that they can not reciprocate. So while it would be great to say, we’ll give all visiting teams 2000 seats in the 300 level, only Vancouver, DC and New England can do that for Sounders.

What Portland/Van can do...
Both are hoping to sell to about 2/3 capacity in season tickets. That should leave plenty of seats available to each game. Can’t they just agree to sell a block of a few hundred seats to the Sounders and then let the Sounders sell them to fans? Obviously this doesn’t really “solve” the issue as there would likely be hundreds, maybe thousands of Sounders fans that aren’t able to go, but at least it shows an effort on their part.
The worst situation you can have is for hundreds of fans to make the roadtrip without tickets and then be sitting in bars where there is no security. That’s just a powder-keg waiting to explode.

MLS has a requirement for away support
150 or 200 seats in the same section.
the Alliance Councils wants Sounders to increase that by one order of magnitude.

That seems entirely reasonable
And I don’t see how other teams would be unable to reciprocate.

We want more for Cascadia
Much more, like in the 1000s

The main concern for the FO...
…is their own liability which ends at the Stadium Grounds.
However, you can argue that the Sounders brand would take a hit if such a powder keg explodes in the bars near the stadium.

That nearly happened in May after the San Jose match
There were a number of their supporters who were wandering around near Elysian and Sluggers trying to pick fights with anyone wearing Rave Green. Each bar refused to even let them in, and eventually they got bad enough that a number of cops showed up and ushered them away from the stadium.
Supposedly they eventually wandered down to the post-game ECS gathering at Fuel… I’d imagine that was entertaining.
I personally find the FO's attitude on this...
…to be very disappointing.
One thing that I thought was interesting in Matt’s writeup was that at the meeting, I felt like Joe Roth was saying that he didn’t want to have any empty seats showing and that was why he said “only sell them the normal 150”.
It almost sounded to me as though he didn’t really understand that what we were proposing and advocating for was that they simply sell them some seats in the 300 level and pull off a tarp, section by section, as needed for the numbers that they bring.
But what really bugs me is that they just don’t get that even in some of the most vehement derbies, between the nuttiest supporters, it’s pretty much standard to set aside a significant bloc of seats for the visitors. 150 is not, IMO, “significant”.
