Group Stage Round 5: CONCACAF Champions League Open Thread

The Sounders' fate in CCL once again hangs in the balance — for reals this time — while two other MLS clubs face off in a battle that could decide Group A and Puerto Rico tries to do the USL proud against mighty Toluca. A lot less coverage on FSC this round. . apparently they're busy with something else.

Tuesday

  • Group A - 5PM - FSC - Real Salt Lake (9pts, +4GD) at Toronto FC (4pts, -3GD)
    • 1-1 Draw
  • Group A - 5PM - - Árabe Unido (3pts, -7GD) at Cruz Azul (7pts, +6GD)
    • Cruz Azul wins 2-0
  • Group C - 7PM - - Monterrey (12pts, +6GD) at Saprissa (6pts, +3GD)
    • 2-2 Draw

Results:

  • Group A: RSL & Cruz Azul advance, Toronto FC & Árabe Unido eliminated
  • Group C: Monterrey wins group. Sounders FC elimninated

Wednesday

  • Group D - 5PM - - Toluca (7pts, +6GD) at Puerto Rico Islanders (5pts, +0GD)
  • Group B - 7PM - - Columbus (9pts, +4GD) at Municipal (5pts, +0GD)
  • Group B - 7PM - - Joe Public (1pt, -7GD) at Santos Laguna (7pts, +3GD)
  • Group C - 7PM - FSC - Marathón (6pts, -3GD) at Seattle Sounders FC (0pts, -6GD)

Thursday

  • Group D - 7PM - - Olimpia (7pts, -1GD) at FAS (2pts, -5GD)

Only one team - Joe Public - has been officially eliminated before this round begins, but 6 more could be eliminated before the week is out.  Mexican clubs sit in first or second in all four groups, but MLS currently has the top of the table in Groups A and B.

This is your open thread, in which to document the atrocities.

Kreis clearly wants to win the group

Toronto seems to have invited a lot of empty seats

crappy weather there today, and a crappy season overall, but wow is it empty

I was thinking the same thing

Those that are there are packed into the corners and the supporters section behind the TFC goal.

Aaaand we're eliminated

Fitting. CCL was a disaster.

Bandwagon leader for Michael Robinson as Seattle Seahawks starting QB.

Oh well. This was bad for the Sounders overall.

Now they can focus to making and playing well in the playoffs. They better observe Toronto to find a weakness to exploit on Oct.2 and get those 3 points.

Errr.. we're not eliminated -yet-

Watching Saprissa V. Monterrey on Galavision.. Monterry put the ball in the net in the 5th minute.

Against us last week, Monterrey played four starters, they’re playing one today in Costa Rica.

Pretty sure

SSReporters means TFC when he says “we.” Sounders are still alive.

Ouch 1-1

Own goal as one of the Monterrey defenders was caught flat-footed on a cross.

In contrast to Monterrey y Los Sounders

Saprissa is starting 7 of the players that started their last league match. They’re still pretty awful.

Maybe it's just sour grapes...

but at least we don’t have to worry about actually going for it tomorrow. Hopefully Sigi will feel free to play whoever he thinks needs the minutes.

On the other hand…. we sure as #@$ better be win the Open Cup and get back to this competition, because this whole “….takes on the world” thing deserves better.

Would've been

a hard road to hoe regardless, likely requiring a 2-0 followed by a 3-0 win.

There isn’t as much activity on this thread as I expected, so I just made a separate fanpost to start a separate discussion on how our non-qualification affects lineup decisions tomorrow, if anyone is interested.
