The statement from USL says that it is merging it’s second and third divisions "into a single league property for 2011" which will be called USL PRO. The announcement is exactly what many have been anticipating with the lack of D2 teams still involved with the USL. Also, the organization was wanting to move to a more regional model which many in the US feel is better suited for soccer below the D1 (MLS) level. The statement claims the league’s regionalization will feature a " model to build natural rivalries and reduce travel-related costs."
USL-1 and USL-2 Become USL-Pro
Number of teams in USL-Pro is unknown at this time.
The NASL has submitted a 10 team bid to be Div 2

Help me understand this...
Is this merging everything we currently consider “second division” and “third division” soccer in the US? USL/NASL/USSFD-2 and USL-2? So the pyramid will go MLS (Top) – USL PRO (2nd) – PDL (3rd)?
The guy threw around and changed up acronyms for each, and I got lost in it.
I don't think this is settled
Sounds like USL PRO could be D2 if NASL doesn’t reorganize, but would be D3 otherwise.

NASL is seperate from USL for 2011
If everyone gets their way the pyramid would be
MLS – NASL – USL-Pro – PDL
There’s also the MLS Reserves…

I thought NASL was created by defecting USL owners
So wouldn’t USL-NASL essentially be the same? And USSFD-2 is the band-aid to get through the 2010 season?

I think I get it now
NASL stays intact as the second tier, while USL-1 (current second tier) and USL-2 (current third tier) are combined to become a single third tier? So now it is:
1. MLS
2. NASL
3.USL-PRO
4. PDL
