Gamethread: Seattle Sounders vs. Real Salt Lake

sounders vs. rsl

Dave and Jer-bear are busy so I've been tasked with putting up a game thread tonight. So, here you go.

Seattle vs. RSL at Qwest Field at 8:00PM tonight. You can watch on ESPN, but if you don't want to listen to their announcers, Arlo White will be on the radio (97.3 FM) doing commentary as well.

Dave's beer of choice tonight is Bifrost, by Elysian. Mine is Boulevard's Bourbon Barrel Quad. If the Sounders play tonight like they did last week, I may need more than 750ml of it.

What happens if Nadal's tennis match goes long?

Will there be somewhere else to watch it until that match ends? Come on Nadal, finish this off in 3 sets.

The first set was an hour, so I was worried. Now Nadal is cruising, so it shouldn’t be a problem. They said last time these guys played it went 5 hours. We should be good, knock on wood.

Not really

Olave is out and McKenzie has been rough, while Schuler has done well on trials. Rimando picked up a slight injury, so Reynish. Johnson went 2 full matches for Canada, Grabavoy hurt, so you get Andy and Gonzalez (watch out for Nelson, he could be a real wildcard in this one). I had hoped it would be Russell moving to be next to Nat, but 11 matches in 6 weeks so he gets a little rest.

Our Philly lineup was weaker than this one, should be a fun match hope I can stay awake through the whole thing.

Like I said, USOC lineup

You have guys all over the place that aren’t normal starters. Not saying you’re coaches are sandbagging, just that they aren’t using the best players.

Maybe they are throwing us a bone

Since they wouldn’t have made it to the playoffs last year if not for our awesome victory over FC Dallas in the last game, maybe they are going to go easy on us. :)

by DarthGreedo on Sep 9, 2010 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

who could they use

the only player that is on the bench that I would be starting is Russell, but we tend to run a rotation on our outside backs and have all year.

Sorry, but only three guys (including our keeper) have fewer than 10 starts this year, and you guys have 4 with fewer than 10 starts? Who is putting out a USOC lineup? So who from our bench who isn’t hurt or played 180 minutes in the last 7 days would you start? Gotta say you are wrong on this one, but let’s go enjoy the match.

by denz on Sep 9, 2010 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions

you're missing my point

It’s not that you have a bunch of guys that should be playing, it’s that you have a bunch of starters that aren’t playing. I realize there’s reasons for all of them. Just saying that this is far from your best lineup.

He overplayed it

It’s debatable if he could have tracked it down. But Parke needed to not stick his leg out at all. After falling down in front of findley, sticking your leg out as you get up is likely to get called. I don’t think you can blame the ref for calling it.

Too many of our goals look lucky rather than an inevitable conclusion from a course of events we set in motion

Just sometime, I’d like to see us use the speed to compress the back line into the box more quickly then lay off the ball to 20 yds out. Alonso was taking those types of strikes there and if we were intending to make that movement we might have been able to setup better balls in that area. Or maybe it opens up an angle for pass throwing them out of shape on D. We aren’t going to win consistently through this crossing game. They just crowd the box and we end up tripping off each other.

I also think we’ve got to have someone hedging near post in the open on some of these free kicks. the ball seems to keep coming out in space where no one is even thinking about occupying.

BORING

Aside from a couple exciting moments provided by Findley/Keller and Osvaldo’s volley, very boring game.

Harkes summed it up well for once… both teams would try to play it on the ground for 2-3 passes and then give up and boot it long.

oh

give me a break. blow the final whistle while the player was in attack?

by gstommylee on Sep 9, 2010 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

That

Was the most frustrating call of the match.

It was like the ref just decided he wanted a nil-nil game and called a game that would result in one. When players are literally being manhandled in the box and nothing gets called (or called consistently) it is going to result in this kind of a game. The one time we get a genuine one-on-one without a bunch of RSL players positioned to defend, they call the game. Give me a break.
