MLS Draft 2011: Live Thread
Shortly all the guess work will be done. Real players will be under the control of real teams. Mocks will only exist to be mocked, and instead the timeline will move to training camps and roster battles.
Like any major sports league the MLS SuperDraft starts out on ESPN2 (www.ESPN3.com if you must) for the first round with coverage starting at 9AM Pacific. The 2nd and 3rd round will be on www.MLSsoccer.com - full draft cover HERE.
Seattle has picks 11, 21, 27, 29 and 47 - at least as of now.
Ives in his final full Mock (not used in our Meta) has Seattle going Ampai, Keat, Sapong (but for Chicago still), King and Attinella the Keeper.
Follow the full draft here. We'll have quick reactions/profiles posted separately for each of the brand new Sounders.

Goff is hearing that MacMath could go top 10
I know he hasn’t been the most popular suggestion around here, given that MLS hasn’t had young SuperDraft GKs with lots of success, but we could also point to Tim Howard as a guy who, at age 22 won MLS GK of the Year.
Now, I don’t know anything particular about MacMath—never seen him play—and I see the risks in using a pick on a young keeper, but he could turn out to be a good pick in the long run.
Let's go Sounders
Hopefully, we can get some a little more ready to contribute then Estrada.

This seems to continue the trend of Vancouver/Portland going way young...
…and looking towards the future rather than getting guys who can help them right this minute. Or at least that’s the impression I’ve gotten with their expansion draft picks and other various moves.
Perhaps trying to capture some of that Philly mediocrity?

Total rumormongering
Whitecaps officials didn’t look happy on TV after the Salgado pick. Rumor was going around that Nagbe didn’t want to play in Canada and other rumors that there was disagreement in the Vancouver org about the pick. Maybe part of the group wanted to take Nagbe anyway.
Nos Audietis
Nagbe didn't want to go
Because he wants to get his green card and time spent in Canada doesn’t help that.

Here’s another trade: Portland and Seattle. Seattle deals No. 11 pick and international roster spot to Portland for allocation money and pick No. 20
I doubt ...
… that we would have traded the international roster spot if that were the case?

… we aren’t lacking in international roster spots with all of this winter’s green cards, though.

With the rash of guys that got their green cards this year.
Are we trying to acquire every 2nd round pick?
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. We are all around you, there is no escape.
Well
Sigi did mention that after a few people there weren’t any super amazing picks, but lots of depth. 2nd round picks gain us more if they are players we aren’t intending to start right away. I mean the Estrada pick was kinda crap for a 1st rounder. So why not trade back and get some cash?
Was thinking about that Sigi comment too
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. We are all around you, there is no escape.

Finally an expected pick

That opens up the door for Ampai
In the second round.
Seems like we are saying
As an organization, the draft is crap. We will build thru signings.
Yeah, but those picks won't see the field this year
We aren’t looking to add to this team, we are going to take a bunch of long shots and see if they develop.
Stockpiling five picks is a commitment to obtaining and developing young players.
I’d hardly say that suggests the organization thinks the draft is crap.
Trading down for dollars does
We didn’t get more picks lower, we moved down for dollars to sign people with.
And got a second round pick.
So they still have the same amount of picks.
CougCenter, SBNation Seattle, @FloydCoug
Night Editor - SBNation.com
Yeah, but not 2 picks
We moved down in the draft for dollars, not more picks.
And if they didn't spot someone at pick 11 they thought was worth an 11 overall
it makes sense to move down and trade some of the value of that pick for additional resources to be used elsewhere.
Yeah, not seeing anyone worth signing at 11
is a big endorcement of the draft….
We've got a boatload of picks this draft.
The only thing this seems to say is they didn’t view anyone that they wanted with an 11 overall pick, so they dealt that for a lower pick and additional resources.
Look to Rooney
Portland was our biggest rival for him since he also trained there. And we just took that draft pick from them.
Nos Audietis

Evan Brown, Evan Brown
paging Evan Brown
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. We are all around you, there is no escape.
Doesn’t that imply that more picks would be better? If our bust rate is that high then the more shots we take the better. Not to mention that the reserve league really does mean we would have held on to some of those busts, I’d wager.
That seems like false logic to me
but in a way it makes sense. Forgot about the reserve league. Maybe those longshots will actually turn into something
by chrisperry1983 on Jan 13, 2011 9:41 AM PST up reply actions
I suppose it depends on whether you believe the busts are due to our scouting and picking or due to a high bust rate of draftees. If it is solely on us, then yeah you are right that isn’t going to help. If it is because a lot of players beside the highest rated ones tend to bust, then more picks would be better once those highly rated ones are gone.
I feel like we made a lot of bad choices on some guys.
Evan Brown particularly was a bad choice. He’s playing in an amateur league now.
by chrisperry1983 on Jan 13, 2011 9:46 AM PST up reply actions
Still kinda confused
GA contracts still cost us less than a 2nd round shotgun approach. So as a cash strapped team…?

There won't be any GA players they are interested in

I wondered sometimes why the media didn't do that.
You get that in other sports—defensive center in basketball, power hitter in baseball. Terms that people can relate to and understand: this guy’s specialty and standard is he’s super fast in attacking and helping people score; this guy is known for rugged defense and getting the ball back to the offense for scoring chances.
They're smart. They know the die-hards and super fans will watch no matter what, so they do their best to not over talk the marginal fan.
We hate it, but it works. Whatever is best for our sport.

McCarthy in the 2nd Round!
That’s my hope.
More analysis from elsewhere
Jeff Carlisle: Colorado is up next. Big question is what happens to Omar Cummings who is on trial at Aston Villa. The Rapids might want to shore up the front line just in case. Like I said earlier, with the Nyassi and Marshall now on board, I think Colorado has already shored up the other parts of their roster.
I would wholeheartedly support this as well
my biggest fear is they get too cheeky and try to find themselves a steal. Sometimes best value is best value.

I will never get the fascination with combines, here or in the NFL.
Well
When you’re playing with the best of your class and you suck, it might give a little insight into your future with the pros. If you can’t figure out what to do with the ball (which I heard is what happened when he was pressured) it’s not a good sign.
But in general I understand what you are saying.

With comments like this
I should apply to MLS for a commentator position.

They'd ask you to say the same boring stuff.

But will they work hard, this new pick? And do they have some sort of nose for something, perhaps goal?
I think
They’ll put in a decent effort, be technically sound, and generally enjoy being on the field and drawing a paycheck to play games.

Anybody else feel like with kinda blew it with this draft?

I like the Tetteh pick
And I like that we got some much needed allocation dollars out of the draft. I’m not terribly excited about anything else the Sounders did.
I think getting Tetteh was a nice job.
Beyond that I trust Henderson. Cruz is my dark horse to make the squad.
yes

Nah. No one out there was so good that I feel we totally crapped the bed. It’s not like Estrada last year. That pick was really weird. Tetteh is supposed to be solid, so I’m happy with that.
Yeah I'm content with Tetteh
Certainly better with Tetteh than Estrada. When they called his name last year I couldn’t believe it.

Agreed
Frankly, and going against what I said earlier, getting one good talent out of each year isn’t bad at all, and the way we sign internationals allows us to use the draft to try to find these steals. No issues with taking a flyer on raw players, we make sure we don’t need to rely on the draft to build our team.

Not
really. If Seattle really had gaping needs, they would have drafted differently.
This is a good point.
These guys are all depth. We had the ability to take some chances on guys. Getting some extra cap space out of it was just gravy.
but it begs the question
why not trade more away, and get more cap space? we already have 27 players, with 5 picks that puts us 2 over

Seattle
will be making cuts. With the 2 defenders they drafted there will be competition in training camp in CB and LB.
I doubt Baudet is kept on

so why not try to trade him
plus 2 second rounders, for a higher pick, or money or something

Really?
Everything I’ve read about him suggests that he would be an upgrade over Marshall and Graham for the 4th CD spot. With the roster expanding I don’t see why he wouldn’t (barring a signing).
Well
he would be battling to get a senior roster spot. So who knows at this point whats the final 30 man roster will look like especially we still have 1 more pick + the supplemental draft
Competition Spring is going to be the theme
I have heard/read several interviews that indicated that to improve the talent they have it is good to have strong competition for those spots. Sigi even alluded to competition in starting positions and that doesn’t even mention the expanded roster….

No
Set aside the names and they picked players at positions of need. Like Dizzo said, there are so many players out there, we’re not going to know all the names. I’m willing to trust the Sounders brain trust and also accept that the draft for all teams is a huge crapshoot.
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. We are all around you, there is no escape.
Also
want to add we got allocation money. Question is what is Seattle planning to do with the allocation money? Buy down a few contracts? Save it for a summer transfer window signing?
alright I'm out
Will check back later on our last pick. Have a great thursday everyone!

I like the draft.
Why not get 3-4 long shots, who show something to someone watching, and see if you get really lucky. The other guys everyone wants werent’ exactly home runs. Maybe we’ll get lucky!

I think
seattle should go with a RB for their last pick to help with the RB depth problem.
Any good options still out there?
At least, any good options we’re aware of. Can certainly take a risk since Riley has at least a few good years left in him.

Should
be a few decent to good RB’s left.
Anyone else see this from Garber?
The commissioner also said that the conference alignment and playoff format is close to being finalized. And to further intensify the Pacific Northwest rivalry between Seattle, Portland and Vancouver, Garber said MLS is strongly considering a week-long round robin between the clubs — three regular season matches in a span of a week or so (Van vs. Sea, Sea vs. Port, Port vs. Van).
The thread Cooler...
Yeah why would you burn the hype all in one week.
The rest of the country won’t be awake to care about it anyway. :(

Terrible idea
Don’t blow all the excitement in one week. Best part of big games is seeing them coming on the calendar. If they are all at the same time you only get that feeling once. Instead of a bunch of times.
by DarthGreedo on Jan 13, 2011 12:43 PM PST up reply actions
We play home and aways with both.
This in not all of the excitement. It is only half of it. We will have a home and away with each team, so this could be a great way to kick off the derby and then the return leg of both games would come later. I think this could be interesting.
I bet 20 bucks Sean Okoli is signed
before he goes off to college. That may be a reason they stayed away from an attacking midfield type player.
Alex Caskey
M, Davidson College to the Sounders
What? That’s a terrible pick. I can’t believe we wasted our valuable 3rd round pick on that guy!!!
Who is he?
Depth
help in mid which isn’t exactly a bad thing at this point.
Henderson Says All 4 in SSFC's Top 25
I saw a tweet quoting Chris Henderson saying all of our picks were in the top 25 players on our board. Not bad considering we made them all between 20 and 47. They sound really high on Tetteh. Of course they wouldn’t say anything other than that, but if you take them at their word they “did exceptionally well”.
If they're happy then I'm happy...
I get the feeling there’s some unhappy folks in the Whitecaps front office. Ben Olson has to be very happy with Kitchen falling into his lap. Dominic Kinnear came away from the draft in great shape with two G.A. prospects who can start right away.
