Open Flavor Friday - I can taste again
It is another Open Flavor Friday; a weekly open thread to talk flavor.
We'll talk beer, wine, food and maybe other beverages. Others will talk coffee - I can't as it is my full time job.
Let's get a few things out of the way. If you are not of legal consumption age in your place of residence do not drink alcohol. Do not drink in excess, unless you are around people you know in a private place. NEVER, EVER drive drunk.

Best part of this week is that I can taste things again. Considering the full time job which involves tasting coffee, this is probably a good thing. Considering that I enjoy flavor experiences, this is a great thing.
Pike Place Brewery's Kilt Lifter - While branded as both a scotch ale and a ruby ale, the scotchy notes are not terribly strong. I could deal with a bit more malt in this brew. There are strong hop notes though. If you like IPAs, but want some thing different, you can go with this and be happy. Funny story about PPB. When I got out of the Army it was the first Seattle brew-pub that I enjoyed. The industrial restaurant captured my imagination, and sometimes I wish it wasn't in such a touristy spot, because the food and beer is worth a visit by natives.
Yea's Wok - Sure, it is in Newcastle, WA, but for American Chinese it will challenge the best. We in the 214 crew have a typical order that goes back year's now - Yea's Chicken, BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Dry Sauteed String Beans and Mongolian Beef. Recently we switched out the beef dish though. Now it is Orange Chicken and it is good. The citrus notes are strongly caramelized and spiced. If you are on the lower eastside give it a visit, just plan on there being a wait.
Honey-Lemon Hall's - I abandoned the silly artificial fruit flavors.

I enjoyed some Ethopian at Queen Sheba's on Capitol Hill
The best dish on the menu is the Asa Tibs – a nice spicy fish dish served with spongy Ethiopian bread as the only utensil .
Had a few new beers this week that I loved
Ninkasi Oatis (Oatmeal Stout)
Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye (IPA)
Russian River Consecration (Ale)
Two thumbs up for all of them. Oatis was delicious. IMO, the best beer Ninkasi makes. Hop Rod is quite possibly the best IPA I’ve ever tasted. And Consecration is just like every other Russian River brew, top notch.

Recommendations?
I was less than impressed with their IPA that I tried, Total Domination I believe it was called.

I recommend this one. I didn’t like it as much as the Stone IPA I had last week – not because it was bad – but just because it was a different direction than I thought it would be and didn’t really do it for me. But otherwise a pretty good one. 6 bucks for a 22oz bottle is a bit much, I hope to find it in a 6 pack somewhere next time I’m out and about. Had the good bite of an IPA with a slightly milder, maybe slightly fruity finish. It was good – but I’m looking forward to picking up some more Stone.

Correct, they do a four-pack. Haven't seen a six-pack anywhere though.

I got my hands on some
world wide stout from dogfish head….amazing. There was only four cases shipped to WA…it is amazing, if you ever have a chance to try it, do. It has a sweet red wine type taste, but is def a beer still. really good.
A sky of blue, a sea of green...(or claret)
Had a couple of good winter warmers at Hopvine on 15th
… but they don’t seem to have a beer list online and I can’t remember for the life of me who made them.
The other night I had a
Pabst and a Jameson. Probably had something to do with watching an episode from season 2 of the Wire.

Right now I'm drinking margaritas..
Except I don’t have any tequilla or margarita mix in my drink, nor any salt on my cup and my ice is melted… Work sucks.

Beer Flavors
Anderson Valley Nettied Madge Black IPA – pine/spruce aromas, clean hop and nice dry roasted malt flavors
Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin – incredible oatmeal stout, truly “velvety”
Avery Mephistopheles Imperial Stout – 16.86% abv. Holy wow. Beautifully dark, feels very much like a liquor in taste notes and alcohol content.
I know it's just a tortilla chip, but it is a tortilla chip I love and devour.
Juanita’s, complete with the logo of a guy with a giant sombrero on a burro next to a cactus. The red bag’s the best, with the perfect combination of salt, crunch, and starch. I discovered the chips in Idaho, but they’re based in Oregon and apparently they sell in Seattle.
Draft Magazine recently did their top 100 list
Only 4 WA locals made the list.
And not Brouwers?

What made me sad
was no Parkway Tavern. At least 1022 South got featured in a NY times blog post not too long ago.
