United States v Ecuador Friendly - Gamethread

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - OCTOBER 08: Coach Jurgen Klinsmann of the USA smiles against Honduras at Sun Life Stadium on October 8, 2011 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images)

The Jurgen Klinsmann Era is still fresh and new. He's earned his first win, but the soccer fans in the United States want to see more than a win against a CONCACAF middle team and a draw against the best from our region. Tuesday night's game against Ecuador provides a fairly strong test (21st by SPI). Yet, the results still don't matter. Who plays is starting to matter because supposed undiscovered talents of the Bradley Era aren't getting discovered.

Most are focusing on the style of the team and Klinsmann's declared desire to change it from counter-attacking direct play to a more latin possession based team. Ideally some of the players that aren't fitting at this point get cycled out while new blood is brought in. He's had a few months and seeing the same players not do what he wants should be enough.

ESPN2 has the game at 4 PM Pacific time.

Altidore
Shea Dempsey Williams
Beckerman Edu
Chandler Cherundolo
Onyewu Bocanerga
Howard

At least I hope that plays like a 4-2-3-1

No need to see Edu in too much of an attacking role.

Still not a huge difference between this lineup/formation and a Bradley one

ESPN teasing their college football coverage during a soccer game

why not tease your next MLS game?

who are in the potential pool for the back line?

this is the area we need to improve upon first to compete internationally.

I agree. Doesn't look up to what I'd hope for in Int. play.

At least there aren’t actual lines of barbed wired running across it.

Montero.

The answer for the future Seattle striking pair is on display tonight.

Ecuadorian Real Bettis man Jefferson Montero would do very nice along side fellow Montero and South American Freddy. 2013 after Fucito has career year next year and we cant afford to keep him?

I'd make a half time switch

Edu off
Bradley on

No real loss in defense, much better offense

Definitely agree with this for tonight.

Although I’m kind of surprised to see Beckerman starting over Mikey, frankly.

by Kenneth Jung on Oct 11, 2011 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I prefer Beckerman over Edu

and not just because Edu some times plays in a two team league.

Under Jurgen players don't have numbers

positions have numbers.

Starting XI get 1-11 based on where they are playing. No names on back.

Take this however you want to take it but

The Sounders I do believe would beat the Mens National Team tonight 2-0.

by RalfZakuani on Oct 11, 2011 5:42 PM PDT reply actions

Jurgen has mentioned his respect for Noonan during his time with LA Galaxy and more recently Toronto as a consulting, scoping MLS talent.

Little known story: Joachim Low, German coach and protoge/secret-to-success-behind Jurgen with National 11, once scouted Pat Noonan at a US Open cup match when Noonan was with 4th league Oklahoma City reds. Ever since then there were rumors of Noonan to a Regional Liga squad in Klinsman’s native Baden Wurtemberg. Tubingen actually tendered and offer at one point that failed at MLS waiver stages for technical reasons.

Beckerman is really standing out tonight.

And not in a good way. He’s a good player, but the ball comes off his foot just a second slower than everyone else on the field.

by Kenneth Jung on Oct 11, 2011 5:43 PM PDT reply actions

Anybody notice

Tim Chandler look down at his number to see if he was coming off at that last sub…. the players don’t even know what number they are!

Jurgen losing to a better team isn't the benchmark you want

You’ve played two teams better than USA.

1 goal for in those games
2 goals against

Just finished replays of both USA/Ecuador and Mexico/Brazil...

and while I was disappointed by both outcomes, another way to look at tonight is:

NYRB lost 3-1 on aggregate.
