Fredy Montero Named TheCup.US Player of US Open Cup 2011
Fredy Montero joins Nate Jaqua (10), Kasey Keller (09) and Pat Noonan (07, with Revolution) as current Seattle Sounders who earned the Player of the Tournament award from TheCup.US and North American Soccer Reporters. Montero helped the Sounders to their historical third straight US Open Cups by hitting game winners in the quarters, the semis and the Final. While those were his only three goals they were enough to have him finish the tourney tied for second in goal scoring, first among MLS players.
In this possible preview of MLS MVP voting Montero's offensive production is readily recognizable by those from a distance. He now has 16 goals (8 winners) and 10 assists (3 winners) in all competitions while playing in 81% of of possible minutes. While other players around the league may contribute more, none are doing so in such a strong numerical fashion on a team that has performed so well.
Former Sounder Chris Eylander also earned the Player of the Tournament in 2008 with the USL side that made it to the semifinals. Montero was the MLS Newcomer of the Year in 2009.

Yeah, now that Chara's in
the ‘they don’t play MLS players’ policy is over.
Montero seriously can’t get a look over Moreno? JKH should get a look, too.
Nos Audietis
Dayro Moreno is pretty damned good.
Colombia has a shockingly good crop of forwards at the moment. I do think Fredy is deserving of at least a token call-up though.

What gets me is that Colombia routinely calls up guys from their domestic league.
Not that it’s horrible, but it’s not exactly anything special, either. I watch it a bit, and if you dropped the Sounders, as-is, into it, they would be heavyweights, and Fredy would be one of the top players in the entire league. The politics involved in their squad selection is baffling, especially since they haven’t had all too much success in a while (yes, they just got a win in La Paz that was pretty major, but it’s not like Bolivia’s squad is that great, and it’s not like they don’t have high-altitude training options in Colombia). You’d think they’d get over it to try and improve, and that Fredy is one guy who could help them.
You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.
There was such a policy?
Is this common in Latin American countries? If so screw them for basically blacklisting a league for whatever reason it may be.
Roll on, Columbia, roll on
If the Columbia picked up Montero, MontaƱo, and Hurtado, I’d make a point of cheering them on in CONMEBOL qualifying and the World Cup. I’d be sad that they’d miss league matches, but I’d consider watching them nonetheless.

Freddy is the man and it's time everyone knew it!
If anyone mumbles about his work rate, just turn your back on them. It’s really the best form of education at this point.
His technique and finishing skills aren’t easy to come by, enjoy him while we can.

Newcomer of the Year and the Sounders FO
Just reflecting on how impressive it is that a FO that has existed for 3 years has plucked 2 Newcomers of he Year (I’m calling #TheTrialist a lock at this point). It truly is quite the feat if you think about the roster churn that occurs in this league.

Can we once and for all
Put the “Fredy is lazy / Fredy doesn’t care / Fredy doesn’t play defense” junk to rest????
I dont think everyone believed that, but enough people did, I saw it and heard it in the stands. Is that now and forever truly over with, or if he has a bad half will people turn on him again?
i'm amazed at how often i still hear people say this stuff.
unfortunately, not everyone reads S@H

I hear it at least once or twice every game
pre-game, post game, during the game amongst people around me…it’s insanity.
