Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

Friday Night MLS Game Thread

The Seattle Sounders are busy assembling 63,000 or so close friends of Kasey Keller for a little sending off party, but there are games of significant consequence elsewhere in the league tonight. The match between the Portland Timbers and Houston Dynamo (on ROOT sports) has huge implications for the bottom of the playoff race, as these are the two teams on the edge of the top 10. And the Rocky Mountain Cup match between Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids (on ESPN2) could determine who plays the Sounders in the playoffs. A loss by RSL would open the door a little wider for FC Dallas to earn their way back into the top three in the West.

I'll be enjoying a Flying Squirrel pizza and a Woodchuck Fall Cider while I try to watch both games at once.

Did you prewrite excuses?

Also with cider tonight. Crispin.

And I like either of these teams as 10seeds. They can go on a short streak and make the West Conference Finals here.

I want RSL to lose

But I just can’t bring myself to root for the Rapids.

I'd rather Seattle face Dallas in the playoffs

Enough to watch Gary Smith’s smug mug after a win? Probably not.

There really are no good guys in the two matches

Houston’s fine, I guess. But they did knock us out of the playoffs.

Either of Houston or Portland could cause LA trouble

Since both are set-play teams, skill matters a bit less.

Ooooh, Nyassi down in the box over Pickens

Should either be a penalty or a yellow card to Nyassi. Obviously, it’s neither.

Then Wells Thompson, who pretends to be a devout Christian, gets into a shoving match.

Holy War!

Of course not, but players who make a big show of their faith (like waving around ye auld John 3:16) should probably make an extra effort to follow the tenets of their religion.

Actually, I don't know if the matchups would fall like this,

but I’d rather see Portland make the playoffs and line up against LA (then beat LA). I would then like to have us beat the #3 seat and see a Sounders vs Timbers Western Conference Final… in which we would ABSOLUTELY DESTROY THEM! Just saying. Would be a fun story.

Portland matches well with LA

Other fun part about this scenario

The game would be in the Clink.

Might just sell another 60,000

for something like that.

It would be pretty sweet.

Anyone else watching the Rapids game and

Slightly bewildered that Harkes actually has been complimenting the Sounders? I keep hearing him say things like “the Sounders are always entertaining to watch” and “Seattle is an incredibly strong team” and I feel like I’m hallucinating.

Maybe he only says nice things

about teams that aren’t playing?

From the Did You Know file

The Timbers don’t have a win at home after the opposing team scores first since 2007?

From the numbers...

…Colorado are dominating the game.

by Dizzo on Oct 14, 2011 8:41 PM PDT reply actions

Colorado drives me crazy

because I really can’t stand them as a team. Also, they have a couple of my absolute least favorite players in the league (ahem, Conor Casey, Brian Mullan, ahem). BUT, they also have some individual players I really enjoy – like Cummings, Nyassi, Kimura, Wynne. It’s a strange dichotomy.

I have the same feeling

I’ll add Marshall to that list as I still remember how well he played for us in 2009

The SAH Links Guy

by Dizzo on Oct 14, 2011 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Marshall would be like a B/B+ for me... for nostalgia's sake.

As opposed to the other four I mentioned, who are straight up 4.0.

Should Chabala be back in the field?

I missed the hit, but the guy looked dazed and confused.

Good Grief Charlie Brown!

The action inside the Houston box there was wild.

Portland at times has looked dangerous this second half. Not sure if it is crappy Houston defending or Portland raising their game.

I was just writing this up

Watching it tonight has had me wondering where it’s come from. That last delivery was superb.

Dike was once a first round draft pick

And didn’t event make it out of training camp with the 09 Crew. One of the worst draft picks in history.

Great save by Forlan. Great save by Rimando. Still 0-0.

Kind of bummed

Wanted Portland to make the playoffs, win the wild card, beat LA, so that we could destroy them in the semis.

It

could also backfire and see Portland beat Seattle. I rather not see that happen.
