Seattle Sounders v CF Monterrey Rayados - Gamethread
Playing for pride isn't a common thing for the Seattle Sounders, at least not because they have been so damn good that the result bears little meaning. Lose and nothing really changes. With a draw the Sounders win the group. With a win they may just knock out the reigning champs. This game has a chance to get a little negative, because Monterrey's scenario is really simple, if they get a point they advance. If they win they win the group. With their recent form in league play they don't need to push themselves tonight.
Except for pride.
The Rayados may just want a bit of revenge from that loss to a reserve laden American side back in August. There may just be a little drive for them to show that they are champions in the region and push back at this "MLS is gaining ground" story. From Seattle's end there are players that will be tested tonight who can work their way into more 18s, more starting XIs. Sammy Ochoa can show that he is fit and ready, forcing a little three headed monster at the forward positions. It is a game that could wind up negative, except that for pride. Expect some goals, these are two proud teams.
The game is on FoxSoccer (national), CONCACAFtv.com and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 7:00 PM

So watching the CONCACAF feed has informed me that the NBA must be in charge of stadium atmosphere
and the Chicago Bulls seem ready to enter the stadium.

Since watching other team's CL games is more important than reading for class...
what’s riding on this game for FCD/TFC?
Winner advances
it is the most complex of the groups, but that’s the simple way.

According to my dish guide, I get this one on espn+ down here.
They could show it in HD, but instead they’re using both ESPN HD channels to continuously loop random shows about the rugby world cup. Oh well. At least I get to see it without hoping on a stream.
You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.
Toronto just had a through ball that went through three layers
brilliant play that wound up with a cross that Koevermans couldn’t finish.

Good job Plata passed that time
Because he f’ed it up royally a couple of minutes ago.
Well, at least he crossed it that time.
It would be hard to say that TFC didn’t deserve to score on one of those.

CCL is my fave
Room at the bar, cheap tickets (sit anywhere), great competition on the pitch, and this year, something @ stake (however amorphous) in the outcome. Really hoping Sigi has Ochoa in the XI tonight
I generally don't care about soccer/football name semantics.
But when the announcer said “SMU is where he played his college football,” I was genuinely confused for a second.
Hernandez just used his elbow on Plata
plata called for foul.

But really, the underpowered dribbler instead of the fancy footwork and blocked shot that went off a few seconds before?

Winning almost all of the duels. They’ve really disrupted Dallas’s rhythm. And Dallas has looked pretty bad all game.

I thought he'd get minutes just for the sake of getting his touch and fitness back up a little for the playoffs.
I suppose they might be extra, extra cautious. I’d still be a little surprised if he didn’t at least make an appearance off the bench.
He played in nearly zero CCL games
iirc only starting one.
He may be a sub tonight and starter Saturday.

I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder

odd...
…that Leo doesn’t even make the bench. Sure he’s on accumulation, and over a long enough period he’s prone to drawing one, but with Hurtado out and and off/on defense I would think having him around would be warranted.
off/on defense the last couple games
…that is.
No Jaqua either
I wonder what the story is on him, wasn’t even in the 18 on Saturday. He did have a goal and an assist in the reserves game a week ago and played 80+ minutes.
Even when he's not been awful recently...
…he’s been pretty poor at most aspects of his game, and the bench is a couple deep in forwards as it is.
Noonan's passing is better right now
They are both basically down to that.
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
I think Jaqua has been setting up goals more than Noonan
And Jaqua’s better at creating space for his Forward partner. Neither have been finishing well, but I’ve seen many an attack break down completely because of Noonan’s poor play, passing included.
I think that's the last good pass Noonan had
His through ball to Flaco down in Monterrey, he’s been horrible since.
It's not really worth arguing much...
…about who should be the second forward off the bench in a sub to rest/preserve your key starters.
Probably be Neagle at this point too
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
very true...
…since Sigi told us specifically to expect him there a lil bit.
Except with finishing, passing and touch...
…and I say that as one of Noonan’s vocal detractors.
No, Jaqua's still better at finishing
Noonan is grandly deficient there.
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
not sure I agree...
I’ve seen Noonan strike a true ball at least approximately on frame recently, and I’ve having a hard time remember Jaqua’s last.
Well, Jaqua's scored 2 real goals
and 3 Reserve goals.
Noonan none
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
I'm sticking by my Jaqua > Noonan
And still wondering why Jaqua hasn’t been in the 18 the last 2 competitive matches.

Montero is Captain.

Someone doesn't know how to spell "Seattle"
from the CONCACAF website: “Live: Seatlle Sounders v Monterrey”
I'm sure that's not the last amateur hour detail we'll notice tonight.
CONCACAF has Jack Warner’s fingerprints all over it.
Distance to MLS Teams
Just cuz I was bored. I looked up the air miles between Seattle and the other MLS teams in the CCL thinking that closer would be more convenient.
Los Angeles = 954 miles
Colorado = 1060 miles
Dallas = 1660 miles
Toronto = 2050 miles
Although I think I’d rather draw TOR over LA…
Probably a result
Of lower meaning for the game since they’ve already advanced and just a general let down from the exuberance of Keller’s last regular season start
Late arriving
the crowd has been late arriving. The east side of CenturyLink has filled in quite a bit.
I think they may have directed ticket sales to the east side seats to make in stadium appearance look better on tv.

One thing I don't get about the Colombia call-up issue is...

Ianni on for Parke
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.
This terrifies me
after Ianni’s miserable performance on Saturday.

FSC might have it right
Parke has a card and recent concussion.
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.
Not really. Terrible miscue between keeper and defender.

Eh, look more closelier and you'll see a definite shove in the back by Montero.
Pushing the defender into the goalie.
You took your own keeper out dude.
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.
Looks like keeper was fouled by his own defender to me.
You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.
Yeah, this guy is a sniper magnet.
Might be hurt this time, but it was within 5 minutes when he started taking bullets last year.
You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.
You are absolutely correct
I re-wound, he’s timewasting.
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.
On the other hand he's being taken off, so he's actually hurt
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.
It looked painful
but I’m going to be very upset when he pops up without injury.

All you cynics
He’s getting subbed

Worst case scenario for Monterrey, broke collar bone.
While I hope we win this one, best wishes at a full recovery to their keeper.
Church is in session

Time wasting is more interesting when there is arguing and yellows involved.
But it is still time wasting.

I love how FSC has already moved into their post-game show
At least 10 minutes left guys!

Can we sub Flaco for Taco, or all we all out?

Out, 3 used

Honestly, I don't think anybody's crossing's been anything better than horrific today.

5 added minutes

5 added minutes is a joke
Not that it likely would have made any difference, but the 4th official must have had a hot date waiting.
The injury to the goalie took at least four minutes, if not five. Add in multiple substitutions, stoppage for an “injury” or two, and the time wasting (and subsequent yellows). All of that should have added up to 7-8 minutes.
I've missed a lot of the game.. how has meredith done?
did he impress or no?
Hard to fairly judge him
he’s been betrayed by his defenders more than once.

Maybe I'm too harsh
But I thought he misplayed the first goal badly and didn’t really help himself much all night. Hard to judge, though, because defense was not very helpful either.

I thought he misplayed the first goal badly too.
But in his defense, his options were “up shit creek” or “he’s screwed” and he picked the wrong one.
Average at best IMO

The entire back line?

I
also what to know is why is Seattle not just shoot the ball instead of trying to make a cross.
Love how useless these yellows are to anybody and everybody.

Do yellows not transfer from group stage?

Only 2nd yellows

A disappointing night
but we’ve advanced to the quarters, which is a hell of a lot better than last year. I’ll take it.

Disappointing way to finish, but we're moving on

loss against Philadelphia
win against San Jose
loss against Monterrey

And no injuries apparently

We have got to do something about these defensive miscues
or we’ll stand no chance in the playoffs.
Sounders 'til I die
Im not so pessimistic
Hurtado, Parke, and Keller in the back middle with less world-class competition and we’ll be fine
Kelller's not playing in the knockout stages, is he?

The gaffes have become a disturbing trend of late
but I’m hoping it’s been a result of the line-up churn from injuries and card suspensions.
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.
You know
i was kinda expecting seattle would learn from last year that that would be more careful with their passing and not make stupid turn overs.
But i was wrong.
