Major Link Soccer - Dat MVP Edition
It's the lull before the storm in Seattle Sounders land. The Seattle Sounders lost on Tuesday 2-1 to Monterrey, but despite the loss, the Sounders still advance to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League. Chivas USA will be in town this weekend for the last regular season match-up. The results hardly matter for either team and the Sounders will be looking forward to the playoffs.
News Around CCL: The MLS will also have the Los Angeles Galaxy and Toronto FC representing the league in the quarterfinals. The Galaxy defeated Club Motagua to secure a spot in the next round while Toronto knocked FC Dallas out with a decisive 3-0 victory. The Colorado Rapids were also eliminated this week.

Playoff Teams Set: The slim playoff hopes for D.C. United died on Wednesday after a 1-1 tie at home against the Portland Timbers. Both teams fought until the bitter end, but United were just unable to capitalize on their chances. Unfortunately for the Timbers their playoff hopes would die shortly thereafter as the New York Red Bulls clinched the final spot with a 1-0 win against the Philadelphia Union.
Expansion Draft Set: Major League Soccer has set the date and time for the 2012 expansion draft. The draft will be held by conference call on November 23rd at 11:00 am pacific time. Each team can protect 11 players plus any home-grown and Generation Adidas players. The Montreal Impact will select 10 players and each team can only lose a single player.
New Coaches for USSF: The U.S. Soccer Federation has recently filled some open coaching positions. Akron coach Caleb Porter will be taking over duties as the national U-23 coach and will represent the U.S. at the Olympics. Former national team midfielder Tab Ramos will take over as the U-20 coach.
Who Dat MVP? Wondering what makes Mauro Rosales the engine that runs the Sounders? Curious as to why Omar Gonzalez looks like a lock for defender of the year and perhaps MVP? Our own Jeremiah Oshan is running down the list of the top candidates for league MVP. You can check out his articles on the major league soccer section of SBN.
More Interest in John: Reports indicate that European clubs are still quite interested in Dallas defender and local boy George John. The latest is that Everton and Wigan are both planning to make bids for the defender during the January window.

…you mean Carson, CA, right?
Kind of off topic
But I think it’s kind of insane that Canadian teams can win a 4-team tournament and get into CCL. I know they’re not eligible for USOC, but seriously if you’re a Canadian team you have a 25% chance of getting in? Redic.

Does it make you feel any better
that the Canadian team advanced to the knockout stage?
Recessionproof since 2009.
I'm happy for them
but the qualification is ridiculous. Silver lining is that another MLS team made it through. That’s the only reason why it’s a silver lining for me.

I guess I just don't understand
what the issue is with the qualification as long as they show they belong there. Yes it’s less games to get in, but on the other hand, Canada is only allowed one team. Seems fair enough to me given the circumstances and the fact that they advanced shows they deserve to be there. If they were getting blown out every game or putting purely reserves on the field (Colorado) then I might take issue, although it could be argued that their poor league form allowed them to concentrate on CCL.
Recessionproof since 2009.

I think it's kind of insane that Canada can only field 4 teams for that tournament
Most populous countries in CONCACAF:
United States — 312M
Mexico — 112M
Canada — 35M
Guatemala — 14M
Cuba — 11M
Haiti — 10M
Dominican Republic — 9M
Honduras — 8M
etc.
Is it geography that’s such a big problem for lower-division Canadian soccer? I’m not that familiar with soccer in Canada, but it looks like they have a 3rd tier and could at least expand it to be an 8-team format which would include four teams from the lower tiers as determined through a knock-out tournament…but maybe travel is cost prohibitive?
Yeah but Canadian teams suck a lot.
Population is less important than quality by a long shot.

The CSA has chosen to only allow fully pro teams into the V-Cup
There has been talk of adding the champion of their 3rd Divisions (semipro) but that hasn’t happened yet. In 2012 they will have two 3rd divisions in Ontario and one at in BC. They also have a handful of PDL teams that don’t get to compete in the V-Cup

The US
gets 4 and has 15 MLS teams. Even higher than 25%. Yeah sure there are tons of lower level but how often do they advance to CCL?
That's like saying England only has twenty teams
Sure they have lower divisions, but how often do they make UEFA?
I met a possum.

Insult to injury
But they actually made it when it was just a 3 team tourny and they were the only MLS team. I agree that it’s ridiculous, but Canada can do what they want with their CCL berth. Thankfully they did quite well this year.
What I think is far more ridiculous is that Canadian teams can bid for returning USMNT players.
Why isn't Alonso
The lock for Defender of the year? I like Gonzales, but to refer to him as a lock…well Alonso should at least be in the discussion.
okay
silly MLS. Well then Gonzalez or John would get my vote. How weird though cause Defensive Midfielders some might argue are the most important defender on the field.

SaH Awards list "defensive players"
So Keeper and CDMs will be included.

Funny how opinions change
I was talking with someone about how Mauro Rosales remains an MVP dark horse and mostly stemmed by Jeremiah’s article from last month my friend was a bit amazed at how we got him in the first place. Which brings me to this little bit of Nostalgia just 6 months, 20 days earlier.
Also if Adrian Hanauer is reading this PAY THE MAN!
Nos audietis in somniis, Nos audietis in altum: You will hear us!
Is there any scenario under which George John could become a Sounder?
Isn’t his contract with Dallas up this year? Would he have to go through super draft, or something else that I don’t understand ?
There is, but that scenario sucks a lot and we don't want any part of it.
He’d have to be traded and the odds are it would be for a whole hell of a lot more than he’s actually worth.
